US Buying Land Around Flight 93 for memorial..

The US is buying 1400 acres for the Flight 93 memorial, sounds like they want to "supersize" the memorial... maybe the plans include space for the jets who shot down flight 93 also...

U.S. buying Pennsylvania site for Sept. 11 memorial - Washington Times

The agreements cover nearly 1,400 acres and include the actual impact site. That site sits on a 275-acre parcel owned by quarry business Svonavec Inc. The company and the government agreed in January to allow a court to decide the property's worth.

Salazar said the $9.5 million includes the Svonavec site. It also covers relocating a scrap metal and recycling business owned by Anthony Kordell and about 950 acres owned by Families of Flight 93, which has been acquiring land and fundraising for the memorial.

They're probably buying so much land to make sure it stays undeveloped. I expect the family members don't want something huge, they just don't want any vultures swooping in nearby to take advantage of those who visit.

As SDaniels said, they are trying to preserve the site. It's mostly wooded area surrounding the field off a two lane road and the designs for the memorial are tastefully design, not too gaudy with family input.

Isn't this the place where the gubmit was confiscating, or threatening to confiscate, the privately owned land of the citizens who surround the site?

Yes it is.
Looks like someone got to them or the price went up or something.

Either way, This is not a high-priority project, IMO. Maybe later.
$9.5 million for a memorial? I guess the gubmit doesn't care much about money, so what the hell. Let's build some stuff. Stimulus.

Why do they need 1,400 acres too? Gotta love the gubmit. Why spend $95,000 on a couple of acres, when you can spend $9.5 million and have 1,400 of them.

That was my issue.. 1400 acres is a lot of land. Just over 2 square miles...
