Does McDaniels need to go after Sanchez?

The way I see it, I have numbered the potential 2009 NFL starting QBs in order (being prejudice, TB is #1) of quality. These are based a little on last years production, age, experience, was the player just a caretaker, etc. This was not hype, arm strength or potential. It was leadership and ability to run an offense. The last few teams I did not list because they simply are not going to go with what they have or shouldn't.

In my list, Orton is ranked #17 or about mid pack. Should the Broncos give away their two #1's to get to Sanchez? Or should they see if Orton can pick up the "Pats system" playbook and jell the offense into a team, not a one man show. He is a tough kid.

Here is another shocker. What if Mcdaniels trades Orton? Would he consider Matt Gutierrez in a trade with the Pats for second string behind Simms until Sanchez is ready? Matt knows the system and the Pats might take a pick from Josh.

Thoughts?

Re: Does McDaniels need to go after Sanchez?

Josh has three young QB's in Denver. As you say, Orton is in the middle of the pack. Simms is an OK backup. If I were Josh, I would consider going with what I had and use the draft picks to shore up the defense. Surely, Josh should believe that he could further develop Orton and/or Simms. rather than overpay for a QB wouldn't be a first rounder in other years.

There are other additional options. He could trade the 2010 first for someone else, perhaps Quinn. He could draft a QB in the 3rd or later. He has no need for an immediate starter. He has two competing for the job. He could draft a developmental QB AND develop his defense.

Denver could win the division in 2010 or 2011 (and perhaps more) with Orton or Simms or a developmental QB. They can't win a division or more with their current defense.

Josh should use his pick elsewhere.Orton is a serviceable QB.Josh will probly use alot of short passes and run.I think Orton is going to suprise alot of people.Look he has a winning record.all that matter is how many W's you have.Denver has 2 1st,3rd and serviceable QB.

I really believe that orton makes sense for Broncos new coach and scheme.Even in college he was able to win games with average arm strength. I believe that Broncos will use those picks to improve defense for new 3/4 look. Orton can carry this style offense. I personally think they will look to pick S.Mcgee-Tx.a&m, or another round 3-4 type to develop. Sanchez could be in the plan. I know Mcdaniel would like to get a young guy ready sooner than later.

Good points. I think that the Skins were going to go 2 ones Campbell and CB Rogers. Josh took his QB. I agree with your Sanchez eval.

Orton may be able to do a Cassel for him. That being solid and servicable but no Brady. I don't see how he gets Sanchez, he needs the draft picks desperately.

If Sanchez slides, fine, if not, go defense and look for Hunter Cantwell, Stephan Mcgee, Jason Boltus, Mike Teel, Drew Willy, or Chase Holbrook...each offers Josh some servicable raw material to groom behind Orton and Simms.

In more ways than one, as Orton is a free agent in one year.

I think the Broncos see what they have in Orton/Simms this year, and draft a QB next year if they feel it necessary.

Re: Does McDaniels need to go after Sanchez?

No. Too expensive, in terms of pick and salary. If Sanchez fell to around #10 that would be one thing, but he's probably going top 5 right now.

Here's an interesting thought in a different vein. What if Denver traded the #18 and #84 picks they got from Chicago to Carolina for Julius Peppers? They would have to convince Peppers to accept a trade, but that might be doable. Carolina would get him out of the NFC, and for not too much less than KC got for the younger Jared Allen last year (an extra third). Denver would end up essentially trading Jay Cutler for Julius Peppers, Kyle Orton and a 2010 1st round pick, which wouldn't be too bad. That would give Denver a much needed pass rusher, either at DE or at 3-4 OLB, and a big public relations boost which they need after the Cutler soap opera. Add hopefully BJ Raji at #12 (more feasible now with his positive MJ test) and they would have a markedly improved defense. Carolina could probably get someone like Robert Ayers with #18 to replace Peppers, or go in a different direction.

Just a thought.
