Want a Safety -- Meet Patrick Chung

Chung is my #1 Safety, while others prefer Delmas. This article reveals several reasons why I think he fits the Pats profile. Here's a couple of excerpts:

Quote:

"Rover is safety/corner/linebacker all rolled into one," he said. "You have to cover tight ends, cover slot receivers, play in the box, cover two’s and cover three’s and you are pretty much the guy who covers the whole field and you have to be flexible enough to do that."
Quote:

"Chung's youth, versatility and reliability as an open field tackler are the elements that stand out to NFL scouts, especially in a class lacking an obvious front-runner at the safety position," Rang said. "Chung has the agility and speed to slide to cornerback, when needed, as well as the instincts and secure tackling for free safety. He might be best at strong safety due to his aggressive nature and willingness to take on and discard blocks on his way to the ball-carrier. He impressed scouts with his willingness to compete at the Senior Bowl, despite having four years of film, and ranked among the better all-around athletes in workouts. I believe he is the surest of this year's safety prospects and a value in the second round."

I still prefer Moore and we'll get him mid-late second

No secret Chung has been my "binky" for us at #47 or #58 for a long time.
The SS that knocks people into different time zones!

Patrick Chung, Oregon, NFL Draft - CBSSports.com Football

Quote:

Positives: Well-built, versatile athlete who has seen time at cornerback and as a returner. … Flashes explosive hitting ability. … Reads the action quickly and is seemingly always around the ball. … Good lateral quickness, acceleration and smooth change-of-direction agility while in zone coverage. … Attacks underneath routes and rarely allows the receiver to cross with the ball unscathed. … Closes quickly on the ballcarrier. … Receivers are cognizant of him when going over the middle. … Quick enough to hang with receivers for a few seconds in the deep half. … Among the more reliable open-field tacklers in the country and should be an excellent last line of defense at the NFL level. … Accomplished blitzer. … Few have Chung's ability to explode into ballcarriers while wrapping their arms securely. … Whether deep in coverage or attacking the line of scrimmage, he limits the yards gained at the point he meets the ballcarrier. … Consistently swarms to the ball. … Durable, consistent performer. … Instinctive defender. … Should be a leader on defense and special teams.

Negatives: Questionable deep speed and is a bit shorter than scouts prefer because of their coverage duties against tight ends. … Physical player who can get a bit grabby while in coverage, leading to some holding calls. … Attacks the line or underneath routes too quickly, leaving room for the deep ball behind him. … At his best facing the quarterback and running downhill toward the ball.
Versatility? Check.

Leadership? Check.

Sure Tackler? Check.

Ability to cover receivers and tight ends? Check.

Ability to blitz? Check.

Ability to deliver big hits? Check.

Special Teams? Check.

Change of Direction Ability? Check.

Smarts/Instincts? Check.

I'm not sure what's not to love. Oh... and he's a 21-year old fifth-year senior. He started at Oregon when he was 16. I'd even give him serious consideration at #34.

Rodney Harrisons replacement :) Smart, hard-hitter but more importantly, a leader.

I think with the good coverage skills displayed by Meriweather in his second season, we'd be far better off with a guy who can fly up to the line and hit. That looks like Louis Delmas for me, or maybe William Moore. I definitely think Delmas is a better option.

Nice info, thanks. Though was that one analysis done by his mother? Even the negatives seem positive (or at least not all that negative)!

I personally agree, plus I think Delmas is better in coverage. Chung is my #4 option after Delmas, Sean Smith and William Moore, but it's quite close between them. I like Chung. I always have, and I had him on my shortlist for the Pats last fall. There's nothing to dislike about him. I just like Delmas better. But I wouldn't be at all unhappy with Chung if the others are off the board.
