Cassel theory: Help me out?

Ok, so I saw this little nugget in Projo, presumably written before we found out the paper-work was submitted.

Quote:

What's important to remember, though, is that right now it's Cassel and his agent, David Dunn, who are in the driver's seat as far as where he plays next season.

He has yet to sign his contract, so he is free to talk with other teams. That means it could be Dunn who arranges a financial deal agreeable to Cassel and his new club, at which point that team would have to come up with a trade package agreeable to the Patriots.
So is it true that Cassel agent was able to negotiate in between the decision to franchise Matt and the submission of the tender acceptance letter to the NFL?

If so, could it be that Dunn finalized a contract and/or the Pats finalized a trade deal at the Combine?

Something is really odd about all of the events of the last week, from Pioli's admission the deal wasn't signed (same diff as delivered), talking about a switch between #23 and #3 (possibly unimportant) and the sudden questions and subsequent answers about the tender on Monday?

Interesting.

I think the deal is done. The bargaining is over. How fast it's filed is going to be interesting, but if the Pats aren't worried about missing the big money FA's (or they're getting parts in a trade) an announcement might be delayed a bit to keep reporters mellowed.

But some part of me says this matter will be answered by the time the late show lets out on Friday.

And with the info lockdown and clearout in KC and the fact that it's always like that in NE...

hm, hm, hm.

Could that have meant if he didn't sign he could do this when FAency began?

Yeah, I'm wondering about that, but I also think if the Pats told him to go for it, they wouldn't file tampering charges, that could be the out.

Just seems odd.

Very well put together theory. I would have to agree.

Say.... you don't happen to be a writer for CSI, do you?

According to the CBA, once the tender has been extended, the player is automatically free to discuss contracts with other teams.

I think Cassel will be very hard to trade for the value the Patriots want. I think he stays a Patriot and they sign very few free agents.
