Gregory Urbano on GOATs

Urbs' Blurbs: How many current NFL players are GOATs? - SPiN - CBSSports.com

In one man's opinion, chances for current players to be GOAT by the time they retire.

He has Brady at #2 now with a chance to pass Montana, and Moss at #2 now with no chance to pass Rice.

He only covered offensive skill positions.

Someone forgot his deadline and had to throw a few hundred words together in about 15 minutes....

Replace every instance of "Brett Favre" with the words "Peyton Manning" and you have a decent argument. How does Manning not make it in the top 5 amongst QBs, over Marino and, ugh, Favre?

Tomlinson doesn't belong anywhere near that list. His career is already on its way out the window. Yeah, he's great now, but in all honesty Terrell Davis was a more dominant back in his heydey and probably won't ever even be a Hall of Famer. Putting him as the fifth greatest of all-time without even mentioning the greatest running back of all-time (OJ Simpson), to say nothing of other great backs like Earl Campbell, is a horrible travesty.

Cris Carter as the fourth best WR of all-time? Jesus, he might not even make the HOF this year on his second attempt. I think Terrell Owens has been better throughout his career than Moss, despite his character flaws. Moss deserves to be there in the top 5, but Carter certainly doesn't (Hutson played so long ago that I don't know if he belongs in a conversation that seems relegated to the modern era). To say nothing of Steve Largent, who almost certainly belongs over those two. And for what it's worth, I think Andre Johnson will be on that list when all is said in done. Even moreso than Moss and the absent Owens, Johnson might be the current guy most likely to threaten GOAT status at WR.

Where's Ben Coates on the tight end list? He was just as good as Shannon Sharpe, if not better (Sharpe had Elway to toss him the rock). And if we're going to argue for the current tight end most likely to end his career as the GOAT, then put Antonio Gates down, not Tony Gonzalez (who has certainly been a great TE, and probably deserves to be on that list, but is at the end of his rope).

On defense, only Ed Reed has a realistic shot of challenging for the GOAT status at his position against Ronnie Lott (frankly, I'd already put him there). Maybe a couple guys at nose tackle (Wilfork?), but Ted Washington was so dominant in his day that it would be tough, and poor Ted probably won't ever get any sort of Hall of Fame recognition (then again, nor will Steve Tasker or Ray Guy, the GOAT at their positions).

OJ Simpson was far better than Emmitt Smith and LDT. The author almost completely concentrates on current, or recent players, while throwing in a few oh by the ways like Mike Ditka and Don Hutson. He also leaves Johnny Unitas off. Lousy summary (not to shoot the messenger, Fencer).

I don't understand your question, primetime.

I'd take Marino over Manning as well.

u know what ur talking about....at least for wr's...

watch andre johnson closely, he may be the best reciever to play this game...the guy has no qb, sucky team, no other recieving threats, gets double covered all the time, and still does work

he has no flash, and is no media attraction, but i would not hesitate to call him the best there is playing right now

While I think Favre is a great player, I think the obsession with him the media has is nauseating. I mean, hes great and makes plays happen, but he blows a lot of games

He's no Peyton Manning.

And yeah, ALP, Andre Johnson is the best WR in the game today. It's unfortunate that he wallows away on a team that performs pretty poorly like the Texans, but even then he is extremely consistent and quite dominant.
