The Myth of Drafting a CB in the 1st Round
I don't understand all the haters on this blog and all the prognosticators online that still call Cornerback our most pressing need and think that drafting one in the 1st round would cure our ills. I have news for everybody - cornerbacks are only successful if there is significant pass rush, without it, you can have all the athleticism at corner you want and still give up big pass yards. See the '08 Chargers for reference.
The Chargers secondary boasts two recent early picks (Cason and Cromartie) plus perrenial stud, Quinten Jammer -- they even allowed a starter from last year to walk in the offseason cause they were so stacked in the secondary. But as soon as they lost their top pass rusher, a DB squad that looked invincible in '07 (remember when they picked off TB 3 times in the AFCC game?!?!?) started to look VERY average. The Chargers pass defense this year is HORRENDOUS -- why else would they have a losing record halfway through the season and have the highest rated offense??? Bottom line, before we start moaning any further about our secondary, we need a pass rush. Better yet, we need a defensive coordinator that's willing to use it. |

Revis worked out pretty well for us.

Re: The Myth of Drafting a CB in the 1st Round
CB works like any other position. I don't think 1st round CBs have done any better or worse recently except for the absence of true superstar talent (which doesn't affect us anyways). Last year had Revis, Hall, and Ross, with both Revis and Ross looking awesome already.
And even with the additions of Wheatley and Wilhite we'll probably be in need of a CB. Hobbs is a FA soon and might come with a higher price tag than one would deem reasonable, none of Wheatley, Wilhite, Richardson or L. Sanders are for sure starters (or even for sure nicklebacks) and we might need an upper echelon CB anyways. |
