Brady update

Infection slows Patriots quarterback Brady's rehab - The Boston Globe

Serious uncertainty. Sounds like he will not be ready for TC and probably a good bit therafter. Makes me think that the team will be looking for a little QB insurance this summer. I wonder what they would have to sacrifice to pony up the money to keep Cassel? Is it even possible given what other teams will offer?

*Sigh*

If you read a story that it's going to rain tomorrow, do you assume there will be a flood?

I love phrases like, "In all likelihood..."

More NFL sources too.

Just prepare yourself for this "story" of mights, maybes, expert opinions and NFL sources every few weeks...until they actually have real, hard facts on his condition.

Huh? I read this article and it sounds more likely that Brady will be back for training camp. The article stated that the likelihood is that there will not be a need to replace the ACL and the infection is subsiding. It even states in the article that Brady doesn't need to rush back to rehab because training camp is in July and that many athletes break new grounds in rehabbing these types of injuries.

Exerpts from the article:

Quote:

In all likelihood, the patella tendon graft inserted to replace his torn ACL during surgery Oct. 6 will be kept, and not replaced in a second operation.
Quote:

As Brady aims to return for next season, the next several months of rehab are critical. But with training camp starting in July, it is unnecessary to rush.
Quote:

Brady's infection added one more variable to an already unpredictable and evolving process. When coming back from ACL tears, it is not unusual for athletes to break new ground because they enter surgery stronger and fitter than the average patient, have more time to devote to rehab, and often face pressure to come back quicker. In part because of athletes pushing the envelope, accelerated ACL rehab protocols have been developed.
Quote:

"If someone wanted to bet me today if Brady makes it back, I would not bet against him, no way," said Kevin Wilk, who as associate clinical director of Birmingham, Ala.,-based Champion Sports Medicine works closely with Dr. James Andrews and who has helped more than 500 NFL players recover from ACL surgery. "He'll make it back because he's a smart guy, a pro athlete with the best of medical care.

"They're not going to let him fail. They're going to do everything humanly possible. Unless something goes really weird, something that was a 1 in 2 million shot, he's going to make it back and back at the same level."

Yes, there is still some uncertainty still, but this article is encouraging, not discouraging. It looks like this will only be a month or so setback rather than months or over a year or his career as people were predicting several weeks ago.

I did not see anything that said he wouldn't be ready for training camp. In fact, they stated the opposite was a definite possibility.

I still think its way to early to speculate, he has 8-9 months to be ready. I think the best thing for all would have Brady speak up himself and say how he really is doing.. This damn staph infection, is a serious thing..

Some of the same experts said this was career threatening a couple weeks ago. No expert can accurately assess Brady's situation unless they examine his knee and see the MRIs. It is all speculation.

That said. I saw this piece as positive not negative. The headline is deceiving. Yes, there is a threat of scarring, but that is a thread without an infection. But it is increased with the infection, but not neccessarily a definite possibility.

There is nothing news-like about this article. Tripe.

My take on the piece was the same as yours. I was particularly encouraged by the final quotes from Dr. Wilk. Imagine if the headline had been "Dr. Says Brady Chances of Not Being the Same 1 in 2M"?

There is news in this article. Old news, but news none the less. It does state that Brady came to Boston for a check up and that he suffered from a staph infection. And the likelihood that the ACL will not need to be replaced, but no final decision will be made until Brady is done with his antibotic treatment.

Otherwise, it is all speculation and conjecture just like the stuff that went on a few weeks ago that had Brady anywhere from a few week set back to the doctors needing to amputate his leg. It will just lead to more people calling WEEI with their horror stories of unrelated ACL injuries from 20 years ago to compare to Brady.

That's my point. Most of the spin is intended to cause hype by speculating about thing we already knew and what ifs. That is shoddy journalism.
