Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens What is Up With This?

Does Alaska have a legal pot law? Are they over medicated?

The Associated Press: Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens holds slim lead

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — With his political future uncertain, a weary Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens, looking at bit deflated, left a gathering of supporters to go home and get some sleep. With 96 percent of precincts reporting, Stevens — the longest serving Republican in the history of the Senate — led Tuesday with 48 percent of the vote compared to 47 percent for two-term Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich, a Democrat.
Stevens' lead was fewer than 4,000 votes with more than 40,000 absentee ballots to be counted within 10 days.

They're voting to keep the seat more than anything. He'll definitely resign or go to jail (hopefully jail), and then Palin will then appoint one heckuva replacement, gosh dern it!

I don't think they read the news

I spent last summer living/fishing out there with my should-be institutionalized aunt (married into family, thank god...id hate to have same genes as her...) and whacked-out fisherman uncle. From what I could gather, the people were well aware of what was going on. The problem seemed to be a total lack of trust for all gov't officials, rather than lack of involvement. This was the case in the small town I was subjected to at any rate.

And yes, marijuana is at a minimum decriminalized, if not legal in the state. My uncle is a bit of a pot head and I remember him making comments about how if the feds would mind their own business he wouldn't have been bagged for possession recently, among other things.

After spending a summer there, I would gurantee that an impartial study would show that the highest concentration of mental instabilaty would go to Alaska no contest.

Just saw on Rachel Maddow (sp) that if Stevens is booted, she replaces the position. Palin could resign from Gov., and have her Lieut. Gov. appoint her. This was done before in the 1930's.

Not really. Alaska law requires a special election within 90 days. Since former Gov. Murkowski appointed his daughtr as Senator. Palin's best bet is to appoint somebody who won't run and then run herself for Sen.If she loses, she is still Gov. and if she wins, it's Mrs. Smith goes to Washingotn to get some gravitas...

The stuff that's coming out on her now about the campaign might hurt her and hasn't her popularity dwindled since she started to run for VP?

Everyone seems to think that she's going to have some kind of role because people like her, I think he'll just fade back into obscurity.

Regardless of the mechanism, this Senate seat will be Republican and given the situation that's the most important thing.
