What can we do to not become the New York Yankees?

I suppose we can throw the 2008 season out the window. The question now becomes, is there anything we can do to recapture the magic of 2001-2004? I'm afraid that we may become the new york yankees in that regard - they were never the same team after Rivera blew game 7 against the diamondbacks. Even if brady comes back next year, we still have glaring holes in the secondary. Not only that, the guys we drafted to replace asante samuel are midgets themselves. Chambers absolutely owned our CBs last night. Our oline is just a bunch of country boys that will be a year older next year. When I look back at what happened to the yankees and think about how something similar may happen to us, it absoltely makes me nauseous.

For starters, you can try not sounding like a NY Yankees fan.......

We need to draft well. Hopefully next year we'll see good contributions from Mayo, Crable, Wheatley, Willhite and Guyton; we look like we'll have a #1 in the 12-20 range this year which is high for a quality team; we also have SD's #2 and will likely get a #3 for Samuel, if not certainly a #4. If last year's draft comes through and we follow through with a good draft this year with a extra picks, these drafts will need to be a big part of the next five years.

i'm concerned that our DBs are too small. We need tall guys to go up against the bigger receivers in the league like plex. Do you think Malcolm jenkins will be available for us? Or is he top 5 talent?

If after 5 games you believe you can forget about the season, then just never watch football again until december/january. Change your expectations and then maybe winning will be fun again for you as a fan. Stop expecting and demanding perfection, and just go along with the ride, rooting for the team and hoping for the best. This team is never the same team in December as it was in September/October.

No way to tell on Jenkins, we don't know where we're drafting or who's coming out - I'd say unlikely right now unless we do worse than I expect. NFLDraftCountdown's top CB show a good amount of size :

Draft Countdown - 2009 NFL Draft | Cornerback Rankings

But, again, we have to see who's coming out.

Smaller faster DB's who play with good technique make plays. 'Sante was only 5'10". O'Neal is 5'11". The bigger corners can't run with WR's in man and lack the quickness to close on them or picks in zone. And you can't beat 'em up any more. The real problem is no pressure and no safety help, but that was a largely a design flaw in last nights defensive game plan. They were content to stop the run and TE receptions.
