Jags OT Collier paralyzed below waist, left leg amputated

ESPN - Doctors: Collier paralyzed below waist, one leg had to be amputated - NFL

Quote:

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jacksonville Jaguars offensive tackle Richard Collier, who was shot earlier this month, is paralyzed below the waist and has had his left leg amputated, his doctors said Monday.

They said Collier, who had 14 bullet wounds, is now in stable condition after being previously listed in critical condition.

Collier and former teammate Kenneth Pettway were waiting for two women outside an apartment complex early Sept. 2 when a gunman fired into the vehicle, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. Pettway was not injured.

Wow. That's sad. A young man with so much potential just lost his career and, to a greater extent, a "normal" life in a senseless shooting. He will be in my prayers.

Wow, I do not think I was an accidental shooting. Obviously, he was a target. I am amazed he is alive. Apparently, the shooter(s) do not believe in aiming for the head.

It is a shame that this happened to him. I wish him all the best in his in the years to come.

OMG, 14 bullets?? Obviously, the gunman didn't use a revolver.

I have that same feeling in my stomach now, as when I did when I found out about Sean Taylor. Certainly, the results are different, but how can Collier lead a "normal" life with all the "what-if's" Best of luck to him and his family.

14 shots? He was lucky to stay alive. I knew a guy who was shot in the head and is still alive with a bullet inside his head.

The doctor told him that he would not live long BUT he has lived for years.

I wish him all the best. Given the track of I suspect many professional athletes, namely you bet it all on your football career and ability to earn as a result of that career, I hope he was able to save some money. I hope he gets something from the NFL to take care of himself and any family he might have.

To any athlete this would be a huge blow (life changing to everyone but most people don't make a living from athletic participation). If it caught him at the beginning of his career, even more so.
