Guns Discussion and Control - Merge
....for criminals. Just look at Brazil:
According to UN statistics cited by the BBC of Brazil, Brazilians own 15 million firearms compared to 270 million held by Americans. Yet American deaths by guns in 2010 numbered 9,960, while Brazil listed close to 36,000 such deaths in 2009. It is also interesting to note that the population of Brazil is nearly 200 million while the United States has over 310 million. Put more simply, America has an 18 to one advantage over Brazil in the number of guns, yet proportionally, Brazil suffers six times more deaths by guns than America. Why the difference? Brazil has something America does not have: gun control. In Brazil, all firearms must be registered with the state. Minimum age for owning a gun is 25 and restrictions make it virtually impossible to have a carry permit. The fact is that the overwhelming majority of gun deaths in Brazil are committed with unregistered and illegal guns, especially high caliber guns. Brazil school shooting: Rio de Janeiro gunman kills 12
A gunman has shot dead at least 12 children at a school in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro before killing himself, police say At least 12 others were wounded when the man entered the school with two revolvers and began shooting. The killer has been identified as 23-year-old former pupil Wellington Menezes de Oliveira. President Dilma Rousseff wept as she condemned the school massacre - the first of its kind in Brazil. The attack happened at the Escola Municipal Tasso da Silveira school in the western Realengo area. Officials said Oliveira arrived at the start of the school day and got into the building by saying he had come to give a lecture, but then went into a classroom and began shooting. Teachers barricaded the doors of other classrooms while children hid under desks. Some wounded children escaped and alerted police, who rushed to the scene. BBC News - Brazil school shooting: Rio de Janeiro gunman kills 12 So let's see.....Brazil has very strict gun laws. All guns need to be registered. The killer is 23 years old so he cant even legally own a gun. He did it all with only revolvers. So I guess it was the assault weapon afterall. Oh, and unarmed teachers who's only defense was to wait for police help. I guess that didn't work very well. |

Re: Guns control works well......
Guess that there is not a very good understanding of the Brazilian Culture, there are parts of Rio and other big cities that are generally lawless.. favelas???
At best these areas are a third world country within a more developed country, and are generally lawless... |

Actually they worked great....they stopped further escalation of the violence. On April 20, 1999, Neil Gardner, an armed sheriff's deputy who had been policing the school for almost two years, was eating lunch when Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold arrived at Columbine with their deadly arsenal and deadlier intentions. Gardner said he got a call from a custodian that he was needed in the school's back parking lot. A few minutes later, he encountered Harris, and the two exchanged gunfire. The exchange with Harris lasted for an extended period of time, during which Harris' gun jammed. The deputy and the backup he immediately called for exchanged fire with the shooters a second time and helped begin the evacuation of students, all before SWAT teams arrived, and before Harris and Klebold eventually killed themselves in the library. Harris and Klebold also carried improvised explosive devices, some that detonated, others that didn't. One thing is certain — the armed resistance of Gardner and his backup bought time and saved lives.
