Report: Manny traded to the LA Dodgers

He is a good Canadian kid. Hard worker from a tiny mining town in the mountains of BC. He will give you his all %110 of the time.

Are you implying Manny didn't give 110% all the time. Thats just ludicrous!

Wow, we gave up Moss and Hansen, too? Terrible. Really, Bay has 1.5 years left on his contract - Bor-ass is his agent, odds are, if he's even good enough to make this deal at all worth it, he's gone.

So we traded 2 relatively high prospects, one of the best hitters of all time, 7 million dollars, the two high draft picks we woulda had if Manny walked at the end of the year for 1.5 year of Jason Bay. That's a bit rich for me.

1000% correct; maybe seeing the Angels knock the Red Sox on their asses with two sweeps in a week made the powers that be think it's not our year, they packed it in and are looking to the future. I really HOPE that is what they were thinking because this trade makes zero sense. Z-E-R-O.

This trade blows on about ten different levels; the Brinx job part two, just terrible. This is what happens when the player wants to shoot his way out of town; he forces the team into pulling the trigger on a halfassed trade to grant him his wish.

Dying to see who will pony up four years, 100 million for Manny next year; gotta be the douchebags to our south, moving into a new stadium and all. Manny will torture the Red Sox for the next four years wearing pinstripes, what a disaster.

"Or that there was no chance whatsoever of getting any actual effort out of him for the rest of the season?"

So what are you saying; if the Red Sox sat down with Manny and his douchebag carpetbagger of an agent and said " We tried to trade you and could not. We are not going to pick up your option at the end of the year, so you are free to walk at the end of the year", he would have tanked it going into free agency, playing for his last contract? Quite the contrary, he would have lit it up the last two months of the year, your point is not valid at all.

the sox gave up to much. but what was the alternative? it was obviously evident to the sox that manny had quit on the team. so what good is a manny you cant count on to be in the line up everyday . and even when hes in the line up your not going to get his best. manny could end up with the yankees next year even if he wasn't traded. there was no way the sox were going to pick up the options on his contract. the fact that the sox gave up so much to dump manny just shows how bad the situation had become with him. applying logic to manny is ludicrous. the last thing a team should do is let a player hold them hostage and reward bad behavior. well manny you faked a injury[to clean mri knee films]and you sat on the bench and ripped the team and let your team mates down so we are going to give you what you want and not pick up your options. that's no way to run a team.

What'd we give up? A 5.58 ERA/1.70 WHIP disappointment and a promising talent that wasn't going to become a regular anytime soon.

Those guys could have been used in a trade for a backup type player at least ... depends on how you look at it. Brandon Moss at worst is a 4th outfielder in the league ... he does have more value than as a throw in.

Regarding Hansen ... he needs to be on a team where he will get more time ... he's too inconsistent to remain here in the stretch run.

Does anyone care that Manny was always getting "injured" when elite pitchers were on the bump? Or that he was actually taking at-bats off? Or that there was no chance whatsoever of getting any actual effort out of him for the rest of the season?

The Red Sox could have gotten maximum value from him just by promising to let him be a FA at the end of the season. The Sox played this one wrong ... if they had done that Manny would have been a hard playing member of the team to the end of the season.

OK, I'm now convinced that Theo was in charge of the last Pats draft......

Manny for bay straight up, I could have lived with, but by throwing in Hansen and Moss, that is absolutely horrible!!!

Plus word now is THAT THE SOX ARE GIONG TO PAY MANNY'S SALARY FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR!!!

They should have kept him, and sent him home ala TO if he didn't play, at the very least that way, they woudl have gotten the 2 sandwich picks.

Instead, they deal away Moss, who I would much rather see play than CoCo, or at the very least, could have gotten you Mahay from KC.

Hansen is very young, and has a 97 mph fastball, and we just sent him away for NOTHING!!!!

Bay is not a pull hitter, take a look at his hit chart:

http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/individual_player_hitting_chart.jsp?c_id=mlb&playerID=424726&statType=1

now check out his career:

How many of those homers would be fly ball outs in Fenway?

ALmost no homers down the left field line, and all thos left center homers at PNC, will bounce off the wall. At best he will be another double hitter,

Papi take your base now.

Damnit, I need a new screenname.

Seriously, Manny has alienated people who are/were obsessed with him, even me. I am sad to see him go, and I do think Boras played a role in this train wreck - and I also think Manny's comments about the FO's smear campaigns are completely true. All that said, it was lose-lose for the Sox. They probably don't make the playoffs without him, but who knows what they do if they keep him.

Honestly, I'd probably rather have had the comp picks (if Manny walked at the end of the year) then Bay. Long term, there was higher upside.

"but who knows what they do if they keep him."

I think like one commentator said on ESPN radio......Once the trade deadline passed....Manny would HAVE to get his sh## together and come to PLAY every night....BECAUSE he knew that the sox were not going to pick up his option for 2009 and in order to GET the big payday next year.....HE HAD TO SHOW other teams something........The sox blinked........and Manny won......Sox most likely are going to fade either way.....Starting pitchers SUCK this year.....and our bullpen couldn't strike me out!! (well maybe me.....but no one else!!!)

Ding ding ding.....we have a winner.....I think you hit the nail on the head here.....The only logical answer here at this point is that the sox KNOW that they don't have what it takes to win it all this year.....and are cashing out.....Our starting pitchers with the exception of Lester have been ABYSSMAL......Yeah I know Dice is 11-2.....but he was one walk away or hit away from blowing the door off the sh##house in how many games? Jerry Remy "Holy cow....there's another walk.....how's he going to get out of this one?" When it comes time for playoffs and his balls shrink up like raisins........those mistakes will cause chaos!!!! I think you figured out the secret behind this deal man.........wow....still in shock

and here is some more good news.....guess who is the agent for Jason Bay? Guess........

After driving home and hearing that they also gave up two players and will pay his remaning salary i think this is the worst possible deal they could have taken. Oh well this was clearly a trade him at all cost type deal, and the other teams knew this.

Fact is this deal weakens the sox, manny raked against the yanks and now that is gone, and dont be surprised at all to see him as a dh in pinstripes next year. I just hope to hell Bay is a decent player, if this is another Lugo type bat we are going to have one boring august waiting for the patriots to start up the season.

Manny ALWAYS pulls this sh## when it is either that time of the month....or he wants to try to negotiate a NEW contract or get more money........then....he calms down.....gets off the rag.....and comes out playing like the all star that he is.........Let's face it.....Manny only started pulling this sh## about 1 month ago.......prior to that he has been playing pretty hard........hell he disregarded the red light at third the OTHER NIGHT.....and came home for a run against the stanks.........he was running hard......he is just high maintenance.....but at least you would know what you got........He was going to have to come to the park and play HARD after the trade deadline passed......BECAUSE he had to justify a big time contract for next year after the sox waived him.....sox blew this one....

My guess is Bay is not going to be following Ortiz. Papi most probably will be the new clean-up hitter with JD and Youk sandwiching him at the 3 and 5.

As far as us giving up too much, we put Manny on waivers (meaning nothing, zilch, nada in return) a few years ago and NOBODY wanted him. His 20 MILLION dollar paycheck was going to be off the books at the end of this year anyways, making the Sox bigger players in FA this offseason. I'm pretty sure the front office is very happy about that.

I'm gonna miss Manny just as I missed Nomar, Pedro, Trot, and all the other guys who've worn the B. But I have to admit, the Sox have been pretty shrewd at dumping vets at the tail end of their careers. Manny's still great, but he's gonna be asking for a 4 year 100 mil contract. He's not THAT great anymore.

I'm gonna miss Tek at the end of this season as well. that's just a guess btw.

Bay was 2004 NL Rookie of the Year, he's made 2 all-star teams and participated in the home run derby 2005. He may not be Manny, but he certainly aint Lugo!

"He may not be Manny, but he certainly aint Lugo!"

From your lips to Gods ears is my hope; no matter how you slice this, it's a downgrade, the 1, 2 threat in the middle of the line up is gone now, the whole dynamic of the team has changed for the worse I'm afraid.

the sox would be fine if there bullpen could get anybody out and dicek could pitch without walking the ballpark. or if beckett could pitch like 07 instead of 06. there line up is fine.

Hate this trade. Not only am i sad to see Manny go and replaced by a good but not great player in Bay i'm pissed that the Sox gave up Hansen. I have no problem parting with Brandon Moss but i'm also frustrated that the Sox didn't go after George Sherill, they need bullpen help in the worst possible way.

yes he ran hard . i thought his knee was bothering him the night before? the mistake your making is applying logic to what manny does. 99 percent of players that are in there last year would play extra hard for a new deal. you cant count on manny being one of them. most players would want there options picked up as manny did until boris got a hold of him. there was no telling what manny would have done if the sox held onto him. manny wanted to be traded also and pushed the issue. this situation was much worse than his previous incidents. the sox knew this and thats why hes gone. the sox explored trading manny many times. they never pulled the trigger because the deal wasnt good enough and manny was managable. clearly that changed and thats why the sox gave up more to make the deal happen.
