NBC's John Walters: Weis should discuss Spygate

Re: OT:Weis must discuss spygate

I think Charlie has got alot more on his plate to talk about other than spygate.

Re: OT:Weis must discuss spygate

This article falls into the "How can I write about Spygate?" folder.

Walters says ND deserves to hear from Weis about Spygate because ND fired George O'Leary for lying on his resume. ND is all about honor, etc and Weis was hired under false circumstances.

Dan Patrick has been referencing the article and continuing his Spygate drumbeat. Dan Patrick's whine - "Why won't he <Weis> talk about it?"

Of course, the ND administration is interested in a winning season and winning a bowl. Spygate, I suggest, is not on their agenda. But that won't placate people like Patrick or Walters.

Walters is being one these "opinion-makers" who hopes that by repeating unsubstantiated opinions as facts ("make no mistake"..."one thing is clear"...) after the events have faded from view, people will begin to believe them.

Walters is also a New Yorker, Notre Dame alumnus ('88), and has a rather self-righteous (and subtly churchy) sensibility. His interests extend as only far as UConn, and it is no surprise that he has severe antipathy towards things Boston.

Re: OT:Weis must discuss spygate

The key line from the article is "The NFL does not dock a franchise and its coach a cumulative $750,000 and a first-round draft pick for gamesmanship.
Spygate was cheating."

Walters again demonstrates the one-pass logic which is pandemic across the media in believing that the penalty shows the gravity of the crime. Usually in most legal systems the penalty phase is separated from the judgement phase, and the judgement phase is meant to measure culpability against a given breach of the law. Then again it is usual for the judgement to be explained. However neither of these steps were taken, which should attract some level of endictment; but instead the Commissioner leaves the penalty to infer guilt and severity. Sometimes I wish that Specter had forced a deeper investigation. Goodell must be thanking his lucky stars that this was avoided. However at the very least I would hope that some journalist will start to ask the right questions and that might take a few more years (after BB and TB are long retired).

The only thing that will force a quicker examination is if Goodell continues to mess up. Now what odds can I get for that one?

Re: OT:Weis must discuss spygate

I feel like I'm watching a television rerun of a show I didn't care for the first time around. How many times has this 'Weis must talk' story been written? Walters must idolize Gregg Easterbrook, who has received a paycheck for writing just two unique stories over the last two years: his (or Comcast's) dislike of the NFL television agreements of games on NFLN and Sunday Ticket on DirecTV, and his (or Specter's) opinion that the NFL should suspend or ban BB. Why bother racking your brains for a new and unique column when it's so much easier to rehash an old story?

For those that are curious how Weis is doing, here's the link to a recent story in The Sporting News about Charlie.

Just as I thought that dead horse was buried, it's been propped up for yet another beating . . .

I didn't know if I should take this as a fat joke or a Notre Dame jab.

Re: OT: Weis must discuss Spygate

Lloyd Carr (formerly) and Pete Carroll and the staffs of Navy, BC, and Michigan St sure as hell are changing their signals when they play the Fighting Irish nowadays although maybe not before SpyGate.....

It's over.

Re: OT: Weis must discuss Spygate

Let's say Weis addresses this and says it was a very minor part of the game planning. Or he says videotaping provided no advantage that couldn't be gained by writing down what D-coordinator signaled. Or maybe he says it's SOP around the NFL and the whole thing's been overblown.

Will this writer and his ilk believe and accept any of those explanations? I doubt it. They won't be satisfied until they get a tearful confession that the Patriot's success is entirely based on deception. It's become a grail for some people. It doesn't exist, but they won't stop looking.

"It's become a grail for some people. It doesn't exist, but they won't stop looking."

That would be the motto of ESPN.....they love to play this Trump card every time that there is a slow news day.....

So what are we going to do today brain......try to make the Patriots look bad....

I smell dead horse.

I'm sure Weis would love to talk about spygate....as soon as hell freezes over and monkeys fly out of his butt.
