ProFootballWeekly: Pats intent on extending Wilfork

The thing that worries me is considering how much scrubs got after their success with this franchise (ref. Gay, Stallworth) there is no limit to what the value of an actual good Pats player is to some wannaby team like the Redskins.

Lock him up before he becomes a FA.

According to the video, Wilfork has a 10 year old kid?

His wife's son whom he adopted, IIRC. (Edit: Not that an adopted son isn't his son, of course, just clarifying the "he would have been 16 years old" thing.)

I don't know. Granted, Vince is one of my favorite players and I think he's critical to the success of this defense, but what's the rush in extending him now or even some time later this season considering the questions surrounding the CBA. And even if the CBA were worked out, why wouldn't the Pats brass pursue an extention of Seymour, who's only two years older than Vince, whose contract expires in the same year as Wilfork's and who is equally critical to the success of this defense if not more. With Seymour extended, franchising Big Vince as a DT always remains an option for a year at which time, Randy's, Kevin's and Vrabel's contracts are off the books.

I hope we dont have another "Asante S." ordeal

Wilfork seems to love the Boston area. He's not going anywhere.

Still need to resign him before FA. He may like Boston but a big enough offer will make anyone leave.

Anyone but Tom Brady, and apparently Randy Moss. :singing:

Do you think there's a risk with Wilfork that you sign him to a big guaranteed money deal and then someone decides a little payback for last year is in order and he gets a career ending injury on a dirty play? Not trolling here--serious question, since folks in this league can have a long memory and Vince didn't exactly endear himself to too many folks outside New England with some of his antics (including the 4 times he was fined). As a Bills fan, I can tell you that that hit on Losman still has people steaming, and I'd imagine folks on the other three teams he got fined against last year ('Boys and G-men, plus one other I can't recall) feel the same, although fortunately he won't be playing them this year absent the SB and I can guarantee you that unlike other coaches, Jauron won't tell his O-line to target him for retaliation (which some Bills fans see as a weakness--I'm not among them). Compounding the problem is that the position he plays it's very easy for one guy to take him high and someone else to go after his knee, for example. As I've stated before, I don't root for injuries, but I must admit I wouldn't shed a tear if he got a bit of what he dished out last year. I honestly wonder if that will go into Pioli's thinking in working out a deal.

That aside, I'd do what it takes to lock him up long term if I were the Pats, as he really is a force in the middle and your D would greatly suffer without him in there I suspect.

It will also be interesting to see how much ground he gains on Rodney's lead in the annual "dirtiest player in the League" award. Rodney's usually got a 15-20% lead over the number 2 the last few years (23 to 7 last year if I recall correctly), but I strongly suspect Vince and perhaps Roy Williams (he of the "horse collar tackle") will handily close that gap.....

This is nothing but an attempt to whine about Wilfork. Get over it.

It was a serious question--if I were Pioli it would be in my calculus when negotiating with him. Unlike Harrison, Wilfork plays a position where the big boys can get at him and do to him what he does to others. $25 million guaranteed is a lot of dough to pay to someone who may be on the wrong end one of these days of the kind of hits he dishes out--the kind that can end seasons or careers.....

Wilfork is a one of if not the best DT/NT in the game today. He anchored that d-line last year he should get paid.

Exactly. Give that man a contract. A new one. He's one of those planet people
scouts talk about. There just aren't that many people on this planet who are that
big with his athletic ability. When you get the chance, you draft em. When you get
the chance to sign them. You sign them. No brainer. Look how long T.Washington
has played. Big Vince will be around a long time.

Yup well said, Wilforks pretty much a faster more athletic version of big Teddy...

i agree but negotiating with his wife? YIkes....that will be interesting for Kraftioli....

Is there a current NFL player who fits our defense more .... Not!!!

Sign Vince even if we end up losing Seymour ... Vince needs to stay.:D

Not to be too snide here, but given how "well" Losman has played against the Pats, do you really think Belichick wanted him injured? [Ditto for Pennington, BTW.]
