Most depressing Patriot losses of all time

1976 Divisional vs. the F'in Raiders. Part of it was I was 9, but nothing comes close. Someday I won't hurt for 42, but I'll carry that regret to my grave. I'm glad Raider's idiots don't understand the tuck rule. If we have 1,000 more "tuck"-like games the debt won;'t be close to being paid.

Well said.

I've never been more broken up about a loss than in SB 42. I thought it would be a good game but we would come out on top by 10. I couldn't sleep that night and couldn't get it out of my head for a week straight...

IMO, how disapointed and depressed you feel after your team loses a game is directly related to how high your expectations were going into that game.

Not only is the Super Bowl 42 loss the most depressing loss in Patriots history, it's the most depressing loss in the history of the NFL.

If the Patriots win that game, they go down as the best team EVER. This team would have been discussed long after everyone on this board has left for (hopefully) a better place. Every single team to have a great year from 2008 on, would be compared to the 07-08 Patriots. Instead, they will be known for being part of one of (if not THE) greatest upsets in Super Bowl history. It simply doesn't get any worse than that.

I personally would have loved to see Mercury Morris, Don Shula, et al, choke on a Patriots perfect season. It's depressing to think those expletives still can pop their damn champagne.

******* right.

I can certainly understand how many would feel that the last game was the worst - based on the significance of an unprecedented season, the exclamation of the FU tour, the chance to go beyond the best team of the decade and be compared favorably to the best teams of all time - but in spite of that I did not and still cannot say it was the most depressing loss of all time.

It's rather simple - we Pats fans had already won a Super Bowl. For Tom Brady and BB the best win is always the 'next one', but for me the best will always be the first SB. There is no way that that you can convince me that either the Carolina or Philly win was more exciting than St Louis. And the reverse is true as well. Losing to the Colts after a 21-3 lead or to the Giants after a 16-0 regular season hurt badly, but we had already won a SB. We had that previous success to fall back on and cushion the blow.

When the Raiders got the bogus roughing the passer call on Hamilton against Stabler and the Pats could have won the SB as they were better than any NFC team - with no previous championships and a few really embarrisingly poor years in our history - yes, that did hurt more than this past season. When the team finally did make it to the Super Bowl for the first time, only to get absolutely crushed and then become the butt of nation wide jokes for their poor showing - well, just ask Tony Eason what that does to your confidence and then think about what NE fans had to put up with as the "worst SB team ever".

Losing this game hurts, but it could be way worse - which eliminates it from "worst loss" consideration. Not becoming a lock for "best team ever" is not worthy of the "worst loss ever". Losing what appeared at that time to be your "one big chance" is - just ask the fans of the Bengals, Bills, or Titans.

It's not that I'm being complacent, but the pressure of having never won versus the opportunity of winning again is not comparable.

Just wanted to say that, even though I disagree with you, you state your case very well and without any smarmy sarcasm or thinly-veiled insults. I wish everyone would post like this.

I'm more depressed hearing about how depressed fans are about a game we clearly didn't deserve to win.

If Asante Samuel held on to that interception at the end, you would never convince anyone, at least here, that 19-0 wasn't well-deserved. The Giants deserve more credit. They did beat two elite NFL teams to get to the Super Bowl, after all.

Well, he didn't, so my statement isn't so far-fetched is it? I've been through this before, the "what if" statements, they simply don't matter. Does a team deserve to win if it drops 3 potential picks in the closing minutes?

2 things about the game don't change whether we win or lose - the Pats were uninspired and the Giants put out a Herculean effort.

42 is the worst I've ever felt after any sports team loss. I guess if you're a Yankee fan, 2004 might be worse, but I'm not.

Monday after this year's loss, everywhere I went, everyone was acting like the end of the world just happened. No one spoke to each other. The bars were empty when they should have been on day 2 of a celebration. It's the hard loss on top of missing out on the ultimate greatness while, at the same time, shutting up the rest of the country about VideoGate! There was so much coming together for that game......WTF!

everyone was acting like the end of the world just happened.

This is a recurring theme and I don't get it at all. The Pats still exist, they are going to line up and play the 2008 season. The loss stings, but is it going to make every future Pats achievement less enjoyable? Or would 19-0 have made future achievements more enjoyable?

I've said this before, but I was sad BEFORE the game because the 2007 Pats would cease to exist in a matter of hours, win or lose. As it is now, the 2008 Pats are in production. I'm not going to lean on the "we'll win more SB's" crutch, but I am excited about the upcoming season, purely for the fact that the Pats will be out there on the field again, and not "dead" as this loss would make some feel.

If you need perspective, talk to a Sonics fan, see how they feel right about now.
