How much of a hit has the legacy of Brady and BB taken b/o Super Bowl 42?

Its a hit but if both Brady and BB walked away from the game today they would both be in the Hall of Fame.

Hall of Fame - no brainer. Immortals - no, not yet.

This loss really dings the legacy. We've got the 3 SBs which puts us in there with the 80's 9'ers, 90's Cowboys, etc. However think of last year's collapse in Indy and yesterday's game. Maybe time has made me forget it and one of you folks will remind me but I don't remember these other "Dynasty" teams suffering these types of crushing losses, never mind in back-to-back seasons.

It's a three-pete...you forgot the loss to Denver in the playoffs two years ago.

Yeah but the Denver game was different. I'm talking about jaw-dropping, eye-popping stunning defeats like the last 2 years have been. I can't see Montana's 49'ers or Aikman's Cowboys or Bradshaw's Steelers ending 2 consecutive seasons in that fashion and thus why I can't help but fear that the legacy has been nicked. Now if we come back and win next year...

Aikman's Cowboys didn't do squat after their 3 championships in 4 seasons. So I don't really see the argument there at all.

Good point. I think our team has higher expectations because they've been so close the last two times but honestly, in retrospect, you can't deny the dominance. And it's not over yet people!

Brady and BB still have time to restore their legacy. It took a hit last night but let's be fair. Walsh and Montana didnt exactly win 4 superbowls in a row. they had losses where they were outplayed and outcoached. over a 3 year span they lost at home to Minnesota, and lost to the giants in back to back years without even scoring a TD (17-3, 49-3) yet people still say they are the best or 2nd best dynasty in football history.

That being said, the pats have a few unique problems trying to restore their legacy. Never has a football dynasty been this hated. fair or not the pats have set themselves up as the bad guys. it didnt start out that way, but the perception of BB as a grumpy malcontent and Brady as a pretty boy who opposing fans want to see flattened will not help looking back on this team 10-20 years from now. They also have the problem of spygate. again, fair or not the pats are perceived by most as cheaters. We will see what comes out probably over the offseason as to what extent they actually were cheating. Goodell has flipflopped on what actually went down, to a severe breaking of the rules that justified the steepest penalties in NFL history to this weekend stating it was only 6 tapes, no big deal and a lot of teams try to do this. If nothing comes of it and the pats keep on winning and win that coveted 4th superbowl, they will be remembered with the niners steelers and packers. If spygate proves to be more damning than initially reported you are looking at the blacksox, barry bonds or roger clemens type scandals that have plagued sports and disgraced players and teams.

I can't find a specific thread, but I see some referring to this as the greatest choke job ever in sports (I expect trolls to say this, but anyway). I just cannot agree. I can't see how the Yankee's ALCS blowing of a 3-0 lead isn't worse. They had 4 games, chance after chance to put it away. They choked fourfold. THat will forever be the greatest.

That being said, though, this one does rank up there.

You do realize this is the first time Brady/BB have lost a playoff game in which they were favored?

Thats a pretty outstanding record. The two other losses (against the Colts and Denver) they were underdogs.

They've had a history of winning the games they're supposed to; and doing very well at games they're not supposed to win.

Thats why this is such a shock

They're still the greatest of this decade, easily.

================================
Buffalo in the 80s, Vikings in the 70s.

Big hits.

BB was the coach of two of the biggest chokes in sports history.

Brady is the QB who stunk up the joint in three of the Pats playoff losses.

I think for certain, Brady has definitely lost the "clutch" moniker, as he should.

I also don't think anyone is going to be calling BB a "defensive genius" anymore, since the defense directly lost the games in both chokes, even though the offense was more at fault in both games.

Not for nothing, but man there's a lot of dumb posts here. Just the last couple before this one--the Pats are "the team of the decade, easily"--gee, really??, and the dynasties of the Bills and the Vikings??? You're comparing the Pats to those teams?? Jeez, come on, people.

There HAVE been a couple good points. The poster who said the other dynasties like SF never had bad losses was countered nicely by whoever said, well, right, in the sense that they would just get trounced or not make it to the Super Bowl. This loss sucked, as did last year, and Denver in a different way. But the "dynasty" idea has the potential to continue as long as the coach and qb remain the same (remember, Dallas' last SB was led by Barry Switzer.) Anybody see the Pats 1st SB rerun the other night? Nobody on offense was the same except Brady.

Look, it's hard to get back at all, and maybe they never will. But if the final resume reads 5 (or 6.....) Super Bowl wins, got to 6 (or 7.....) these guys, and this dynasty, is the best ever. This horrible stuff now won't change that. We just have to hope--root--that it happens.

^If the Pats aren't the most succesful team of the decade then who is?

No other team has come close to winning 3 rings and 4 SB appearances.

No bigger stage than SB 42

1. Brady's reputation as big money, clutch winner- I don't think he takes a hit here...because his numbers were decent, he had no protection and he engineered that late drive to put the PATS ahead. I still think he is in the top 5 quarterbacks of all time

2. BB reputation- the coaching was so abysmal and he was clearly outcoached by Coughlin and he failed to make adjustments in the second half.
I think he lost an opportunity to clearly be considered the greatest coach ever with the performance last night.
I think you are being too tough. I'm a Charger fan and I still consider BB to be the one of the three greatest coaches ever (too tough to say who is greatest of my top three). The Patriots were in position to win the game even during the final drive! If Samuel makes that interception (I mean, seriously, how many times out of 100 does he drop that ball?) we would still be talking about a Major Sports Triple Crown for Boston. I don't like all this noise about spygate and cheating around BB but he, imo, is STILL the one of the greatest ever.

Exactly, it's not like the 90's cowboys did much after their last super bowl apperance. And a post by MarionButts at the end of the previous page explains how the 49ers wasn't invincible in the 80's, otherwise they would have 10 titles.

they scored 3 points in 3 quarters on our defense. BB IS a defensive genius, the problem was the offensive line and play selection by McDaniels.

God you guys are tough! I'd take him as the coach of my team in a heartbeat (I would give him a class in being PC and make sure no more spygate stuff though). Come on guys, he IS one of the greatest ever. Who would you rather have???

Again, I'd take him in a heartbeat. How many times did he drive your team to a score at the end of a half or game??? Any other QB and the Patriots don't beat the Chargers in the Playoffs last year (and maybe not this year). He put the Patriots up in the SB and gave it to the defense to win (and they should have. can anyone say HOW DID YOU MISS THAT BALL SAMUEL???) at the end of the game. Did you want him to play defense too???

Dude! Last year the Patriots shouldn't even have been in the game against the Chargers OR the Colts! Hell they beat the Chargers and almost beat the Colts! Sheesh, those other teams are pros too.
