and fixing the defense doesnt happen by allowing Samuel to walk either. Losing him is a downgrade. Lets try to keep the good things and simply add to it.

You can't have your cake and eat it. Trust me, if we can keep him I want the guy to be our enxt Law. It simply wont happen though. Keeping Samuel you can't help the LB core, at least this opens room up for a potential move there? I hear what your saying completely, but things have a way of giving and taking.

sure we can keep him. Look @ the contract Colvin has. He needs that restructured and i hope he does so he stays. Kelly Washington is making a ton of money.

restructure a few contracts and your set. You guys that ask Moss or Samuel..its simple. Moss doesnt need the money..he said so himself. He wont be getting paid his worth of $7+ million as a WR.

That sounds right...How could the Jests spend $20-30mil on a CB when they have a high priced CB on the squad, it would be insane. Of course, that word brings up Al Davis. The Raiders still have mystique with the players - the money helps a bit too.

Their under-rated CB, Ash-ma-who's-it (sorrry, can't recall his name), is a very solid player coming up for FA, in 2009, I think. That gives Crazy Al the perfect excuse to covet and claim the alledged top 5 CB Samuel is supposed to be. If not in Oakland, wherever Samuel signs it will be warm, mark my words...

This is what I've heard too. Asante would like to play for a warm weather team, and going even further, he'd like to play for one of the Florida teams...

I want us to throw some money at Marcus Trufant. I think his contract is void because of playing time. I like his game.

I'd like to take a shot at Trufant as well, but he'll probably cost a bundle. Maybe he'll sign for less than Samuel, but his contract will likely be right up there.

Kelly Washington makes < $1m

this is for another thread, but it will be very difficult to keep Moss & Asante, even assuming Colvin restructures. Brady goes from $7.3 to $14.6 next year

I think Brady is due for a restructuring/extension as well...do not see 14.6 going against the cap next year....though I am no expert.

Forget for a moment how good Asante Samuels is, or is not. Instead, think about what the real Patriots "blueprint" is, and how they execute their plan. Essentially, the Pats do a thorough evaluation on their players and that position - and then place an absolute top value on that player. If they cannot sign that player for that amount of money (or less), they let the player leave. Now they take that money and sign another player (e.g., Rodney Harrison) and keep themselves out of a poor salary cap position. Part of the value placed on a player (in this case, Asante Samuel), is also based on what other players are available at that position. Part is also placed on how much money is needed for players at every other roster spot on the team.

To put it another way, think about what happened with Adam Vinatieri. The Pats would have loved to keep Vinatieri, but they realized that what he wanted was too much for the position of kicker. If the Pats signed him, they would have weakened themselves at another position or two, due to having less money to spend at those other positions.

The decision was that the team was better off spending no more than "x" at this position so they could spend "y" at that position - and it made more sense than "we have to re-sign him" and then be forced to make budget cuts elsewhere later.

It is this philosophy and long range thought process that has resulted in the Patriots being the best team of the decade - as opposed to other teams that fluctuate between good years and bad due to having money to spend one year and being in cap hell the next year.

Some of you guys act like its your very own money and that the year is 1975 when a buck went further.

Fact: the Pats paid Ty Law over $10 million a year, 5 years ago.
Fact: the Pats paid Asante Samuel $8 million, this year;
Fact: the Pats had spare room on their cap of almost $6 million this year.
Fact: the Pats cap goes up almost $7 Million, next season.
Fact: the Pats transfered their spare cap from 2007 to 2008.
Fact: The Pats have lots of cap room to sign whoever they want.

:bricks:

That does not mean the Pats Will resign AS, but if not, it is NOT because they can't afford to do so.

i understand the history of the player management but hey..we were called cheap at one point..and we went out got Moss,Welker,Stallworth,Washington,Morris,Brady,Thomas. We were said to never draft a RB high because we can get 1 in later rounds. We got Maroney. We are considered an old and washed up defense. Once again..its all false now. Patriots pay the players they feel deserve it..and if Asante deserves a very big contract, he'll get 1.

Brady would restructure to help keep people on board. He did it last season to get Moss in

Kelly Washington signed a 5 year $22 million contract. Of course theres the option that we can pickup or else its a 1 year deal. so max value is $22 million and even though hes a great STer..i cant see that contract sticking.

i can see multi players restructuring this off season.

speding money on samuel or pass rushers, they can't do both. It would be good if the Pats resign him. I hope he stays but only time will tell

NE players and coachs are HOT because other teams want them. I can't blame them.

word!...PATS always think of the big / long-term plan (significant upgrades or stronger depth) & wouldn't 'sacrifice' other positions based on that plan. Face it, this includes athletic / 'next generation' of inside LBs; overall secondary (Safety too); rightside OL (Tackle & Guard) & even QB!! (Come on: how many are scared to see a Cassell come in for a hurt Brady!)
If they can find a deceny plan b for the CB position then see u Asante! I would have no qualms with that since I don't view him still as an elite / island by himself shutdown CB (a very select list)...

IIRC, I'm pretty sure Mangini was the defensive backs coach and then coordinator, so he would have spent some time I would imagine.

Sure, but a coach-player relationship doesn't mean they're "close." The little blurb said the two are "known to be close." That implies they have some sort of relationship/friendship that is more than what every coach has with his players, and that it's somehow well known, and that this relationship will be a factor in bringing Asante to the Jets. I call BS on all that.

As well they should. I hope he gets Nate Clements money if he goes. Hell,if Clements is worth 8 yrs 80 million(22 guaranteed) Samuel is worth 10 years 120 million.

Good, let that relationship develop, as the more $$$ involved, the more likely the paying team straps itself with a player having diminishing skills not equal to the SB and Contract amount. On top of that, should he be eager to prove himself to his new fans, his inevitable injury could delay his contribution for quite awhile.

How often have we seen this happen over the past 5 years?

If the Jets pursue Samuel Hard, doe that mean they will try to sign him while maintaining an erection?;)

i think samuel will get 12 years/156M

The Pats are not going to give Samuel the kind of money Clements got.

Samuel wants that kind of money.

As a result, any love that Samuel feels for the Pats or enjoyment he gets from being with a winner will fade when the offers start coming in.

I just hope he gets those offers from a team I don't care about.

New Orleans, Assante. You want to play in New Orleans. Or Carolina. Or Tampa. Not with the Rat.
