Jags will play ball control, keep Pats off fthe field

Like the Giants versus the Bills in the 1990 Superbowl.
If they can keep the Pats off the field and try to tire out the defense, they will be in the game until the end.

I know this seems so obvious...but The Pats have got to focus from the start on stopping the Run and getting out to a decent sized lead.


This startegy worked well for Parcells in that 1990 Super Bowl when the Giants beat the heavily favored and explosive Bills.
Since BB was Giants defensive coordinator in that game, I am sure he will do everything to stop the run.


Seymour, Wilfork, Adalius, Bruschi,Ty must all come up big

I believe Belichick is aware of this and will attempt to stop the run. Make Gerrad play perfect if he wants to beat us.

Except the Pats have a good defense and can stop the run. Buffalo was like the NFC is today...it was JV and their defense couldn't stop the Giants.

That 1990 Giants team lead the NFL in defense. This Jags defense isn't even close to that one, even when fully healthy. The Pats should come out no-huddle and throw, throw and throw some more. Tire out the undermanned Jags D-Line and work that secondary to death.

The Jags can play ball control all they want but it won't do much good when the Pats hang 3 TDs on them in the first half.

Seriously. It ain't gonna be close.

Pats need to get off to a fast start. A commentator was pointing out recently that Jags were down in the first quarter in all the games they lost.

Ball control plays into the hands of Patriots, as well. We have a good, yet unsung, defense that is quite capable of forcing a punt on teams that take 6 to 9 plays to move the ball 30 yards. That said, they also have the dubious distinction of making average quarterbacks good (I think this has been their trait since the mid -80's).

Cant wait for Saturday game time.

Game control is a nice theory, but if your run game is stifled, you lose that. The only way to beat the Patriots is to play 60 minutes. All other teams have quit in the last quarter, and that's what killed them. Get up early, and dont quit.

I don't think the 1990 Super Bowl has any relevance to this game whatsoever.

Beyond that I don't think the Jaguars are going to surprise anyone by running the ball as they have a pretty good running back and don't need to review a Super Bowl from 18 years ago to prompt them to use him.

Whether its on the ground or in the air, the Jags will, like every other team we've played, do everything they can to sustain long and productive drives to keep the ball out of Brady's hands.

Barring turnovers each team generally gets the ball an equal number of times so it comes down to whether the Pats Defense holds the Jags and whether Brady can be productive with his opportunities.

If we hold them and put TDs on the board, the Jags will have no choice but to abandon a ball control, eat up the clock strategy if they find themselves a few touchdowns behind.

As much as everyone talks about pre-game strategy games are won or lost in the adjustments - and its a very different ballgame when teams are down by 3 TDs as opposed to keeping it close.

Isn't this what every team has tried to do?

Seriously, Marcus, you should consider becoming an NFL coach, because nobody else even considered that possibility.

Let's say they receive the opening kickoff, and proceed to run the ball all the way down the field, it's a huge clock consuming drive, consuming 8 minutes. Did the NFL change the rules or will Jacksonville still be required to kickoff after their touchdown? I mean, they will have to play defense some of the time correct?

This is all going to be meaningless once the Pats hang 21 quick points on their crap secondary in the first half.

The reason the Jags don't concern me is they are pretty much one dimensional. Garrard has been pretty much mistake all season but he hasn't been asked to throw all that often. As great a running attack as they present any decent defense can bring 8 in the box and force you to have to eventually throw the ball. Especially when you know the Pats are going to be able to put up some bombs on the otherside of the ball.

I think this will be a lot like the 2004 AFCCG. Go up top early and expose their safeties. I think NE will be up by two scores relatively quickly and I think this will cause Del Rio to panic a bit. And we all saw what Garrard did with his arm when they needed him late in the game against the Steelers. I feel confident Garrard has a very poor day 2-3 turnovers and the Jags are held to about 85 yards rushing.

The Pats did exactly that in last year's game with Brady's first completion going to Kight. And even with the WRs we had last year, it was a total mismatch. When the Jax D adjusted in the course of that opening series, BB then brought in Dillon/Maroney, who both ripped up fair yardage, then went back to the multi-receiver sets.

I can see it going the exact opposite way in this week's game.

Our receivers were not very good last year so Jax focused more on stopping the Dillon/Maroney duo. BB anticipated this and came out winging out of the shotgun, loosened up the D, then ran the ball effectively. This year, it's perceived, albeit falsely as most good Pats fans know, that Maroney is the weak link in this great offense. Defenses want to stop or contain our passing game. I think recent stories about the Jax DBs and their D coaches is an indication that they're focused heavily on our receivers as they should be. And though I wouldn't go as far as to predict that Jax will come out in a nickle or dime set on D, I really don't think their first priority will be stopping Maroney by stacking the box. I think Maroney will have some room to run and I think he'll rip up some first downs on the opening series.
