Vick sold a sh_t ton of tickets but can't win games with his arm. Apparently Blank is an owner that cares more about ticket sales than championships... there's no room in the NFL for that mentality.

National... what makes Blank a good owner in your opinion?

Must be when Blank was on Nat'l TV pushing Vic,s wheelchair around the sidelines like he was some type of house servant.

Please any owner who can not stay off the sidelines, and keep his hands out of player acquisition is not an asset too any NFL team and that includes JJ in Dallas.

Oh and his insistence on a Black QB for his largely black fan base is another moron move that will keep the team he owns from ever successfully competing for the SB.

No it is not because there never will be a black super bowl QB, its the mind set that is wrong.

Any time an NFL organization sets a priority that is in conflict with putting the absolute best football players, black or wht on the field they will always fail to win the SB.

The NFL is way to competitive to allow such non football priority's to rise to the top of the NFL heap.

Mike Vick was the consensus #1 rated player in that draft. What are you talking about? You act like he picked Vick over Peyton Manning or something.

The other QB's taken in the top 4 rounds were Drew Brees, Quincy Carter, Marques Tuiasosopo, Chris Weinke, Sage Rosenfels, and Jesse Palmer. Without the benefit of hindsight, I'd have taken Vick, too.

Vic may have been the consensus number one Pick of the media but not of the successful Football people in the NFL. Tell me if BB needed a QB and had the number one pick in that draft would he have taken Vic?

Vic would be a good tailback or maybe a wide receiver but he would never be a Super Bowl winning QB never happen not in a million years.

BB would have traded down and still got a QB and a lot more.

But Blank wanted a Black QB for his black majority fan base and even told the media this for they reported on it and how smart it was of Blank to take Vic for his black majority fan base and yes it did sell tickets. But it could never last for football fans in the end want only one thing TO WIN and Vic will never be a consistent winner in the NFL he had way more legs then QB ability and he refused to change his game to meet the new demands. He was and the star and that was his desire. If his team did not win well he was the still the star.

Vic was made a star by the media just like Reggie Bush was made a star by the media ,,,,,,neither one is a real NFL star except in name. Yes they sold tickets but did they WIN, WIN, WIN, WIN, WIN No and they never will.

NFL Stars win something of importance with their talent and consistently make a difference in their teams success. Vic and Brush are media stars but will never be NFL winning Stars. Bush and Vic have made more of a difference in their teams failures then they have in their teams successes.

This is not good news for our #2 pick.

Re: OT: Petrino leaves Atlanta for Arkansas

Of course Cowher lives one state over in N.C. One of the reasons he left Pittsburgh.

Raleigh-Durham to Atlanta has got to be 8+ hours by car.(400 ish miles) Roughly the same distance as Boston to Washington. Not exactly a hop, skip and a jump.

FYI...Atlanta did not have the #1 pick in the draft they had the #5 and traded for it with San Diego who also did not have a QB at the time coming off the Ryan Leaf debacle. Instead they trade the #1 to Atlanta for the #5 and Tim Dwight (obviously questionable there) and wisely select Ladanian Tomlinson.

Picking a QB at number #1 is insane unless you are know you are getting a once in a decade type QB.

Ugh I wanted him to come back to Louisville.

Re: OT: Petrino leaves Atlanta for Arkansas

The Falcons have a great owner in Arthur Blank. That dude is a quitter. What a loser.

i feel for blank. 1st vick. and now petrino after blank had all those words of support for him on mnf last night. i'm really hoping they turn it around next year. he deserves it

Re: OT: Petrino leaves Atlanta for Arkansas

I call it like I see it. Blank is also good friends with Kraft and has asked Kraft for advice many times. I read that. The guy WANTS to win. Maybe he needs to learn from his mistakes, but at least he wants to WIN and spends the money. He's not a Jeremy Jacobs. Hey, even Bob Kraft made mistakes back in the day. Remember Kraft with the "stopwatch" timing Tebucky Jones? Remember when Kraft employed the GM with "power" over the head coach with Bobby Grier/Pete Carroll the same way Blank had McKay/Petrino? Some of you act like Kraft never made mistakes either. Blank will be a great owner. The guy will leave no stone unturned in trying to get the very best head coach for the job. Hey, maybe he can use a little luck too and have a Tom Brady or Tony Romo fall out of the sky for him too.

I dont buy that he 'wants to win' any more than any other owner, just because you put it in caps.
What has he done to prove this?
His 2 HC hirings we Jim Mora Jr, an assistant coach with no HC experience, and a college coach from a Big East school that isnt exactly a traditional powerhouse. From those hirings, I dont see a guy willing to spend whatever it takes to get a great coach, but a guy who wants a cheap coach.
Both of those coaches basically walked away. (Mora was trolling for a job he didn't get, so was fired for it) If Blank 'will do whatever it takes to win' why are coaches running away from the team?
I find it a stretch of major proportions to call him a good owner for agreeing with his coach in disciplining a guy who deserved to be disciplined.

Can you explain how he 'spends the money' in a capped league? Who 'doesn't spend the money'. You cannot overspend the cap, so an owner willing to spend big money would spend it on high profile coaches. He hasn't done that. The long list of high profile FAs he has signed doesnt come to mind to readily for me, maybe you can give me that list. Many people knocked the Falcons for not giving Vick any WRs. Blank didnt seem to be opening the checkbook to fix that.

Not a big surprise. He was in a bad situation in Atlanta that was going to just get worse before it got any better. The Atlanta Falcons probably need a fresh start anyways so this is probably best for all parties concerned.

Heh, last night on ESPN Blank was talking about what a great guy he was and the ESPN crew were talking a lot about how Petrino plans to rebuild the team.

So much for that. :D

SD also got drew brees in that draft....

Re: OT: Petrino leaves Atlanta for Arkansas

John Clayton reports on SportsCenter.

Can't say I blame him. Who would want to coach the Falcons?

Mangini

ATL also threw in a 2nd rounder (or 3rd?), in addition to Dwight and the 5th selection. It may have been the 2nd in which they picked Brees. SD picked LdT at #5.

AndyJohnson brought up some very good points about the two faces of Blank.

ATL is in utter turmoil. I'd put them behind the Dolphins at this point, by a long shot. Normally, I'd have some compassion, but I just don't. A palpable percentage of Falcon fans feel like Vick....did nothing "wrong"/doesn't deserve what happened to him/isn't the one responsible for where he finds himself/etc...For that, I just can't muster up any sympathy.

To fault Petrino for bolting would to be on a high horse, and we're without tangible knowledge of the situation. All we know is he was brought in, on the cheap as a college coach, to try to work wonders with a college-grade QB. He was in a situation he didn't sign up for, and he doesn't have control of the team, from reports.

AndyJohnson said it very well about Blank. He may want to win, but wanting to win and knowing how to win and actually trying to win is very different.

Has this become a possible McDaniels destination after the end of the season? I sure hope not... I wouldn't take that job if I were him, unless he really just wants to take on a total rebuilding job.

I don't think that Josh McDaniels would want to get in the kind of mess that the Falcons are in. As of right now the Falcons will take no more than three years to rebuild. The first thing they would need is a QB that is not a bonehead.

Did anyone see Saban Jr (Petrino) doing the hog call at the press conference a few minutes ago?

Geez, HC's are making lawyers look like upstanding individuals lately. If I were a player I would be more than a little hesitant to buy any BS that some new guy is slinging knowing that he probably has one foot already out the back door if things get tough.

Have fun with Carroll, Spurrier and Saban in college, 3 other guys who didn't have the nads to cut it in the pros either.

After the Pats win the SB kiss McDaniels goodbye. ..Why can't one of the Colts assistants take this gig?

Perhaps, but that would be an incredibly shortsighted move by whatever team takes him AND McDaniels. I mean, surely people have noticed that this offense has some of the best players in perfect sync with one another....I doubt a McDaniels offense in Atlanta (or anywhere else) would remotely resemble it.

Not saying McDaniels wouldn't make a great coach one day....fact is, I don't actually know based on what I'm seeing. Plus, he's too young.
