With the 4th overall selection in the 2008 NFL draft...

I'd love to see Mike Hart on this team, chosen with the 2nd rounder.

I notice that Chris Long weighs 270 and runs a 4.75.

If he drops a couple pounds and improves that speed to 4.70, might Belichick have an eye on him as a ILB?

Looks like a pat to me. Comes from great stock. Has the size. His little brother is even bigger then him!

If the Jets were smart they'd be the ones taking Chris Long. The Pats don't really have a need for him with 4 good starters on the DL already.

Considering how well Sammy Morris played in this system, why would you even waste a 1st rounder on a RB?

In the first round you want players that are rare period.

Top DB (to replace Samuel)
Freak OLB or ILB type - if exists
DE or DT

I'd trade down almost as a given unless there was a true freak of nature there in the top 10. That way, you still get a top player AND more players later on.

McFadden is capable of rushing for 300 yards in a game, and has already done so. Furthermore scouts compare him to Bo Jackson or Jamal Lewis in their prime. If that's NOT a freak of nature, I don't know what is.

If McFadden would have been in the 2007 NFL Draft he probably would have been drafted over Oklahoma's heralded running back Adrian Peterson, he has better hands and is more durable.

That begs a question--what do the Pats do with Mike Wright, their #4A defensive lineman? He's an RFA this year, so the Pats could extend him long-term, or offer him a tender (at the minimum, they would get a second-round pick like the Dolphins did for Welker).

I don't think anybody is going to give the Pats a 2nd rounder for Mike Wright.

What has Mike Wright done to warrant somebody giving up a 2nd for him? Maybe Mangini would do it but I doubt anybody else would. Wright simply hasn't displayed enough.

He rushed 300 yards against who, Miami Dolphins or Appalachian State? Now that you've selected a RB, who are you starting in place of Bruschi (retired) Harrison (retired) Jr. Seau (retired) and Samuel (gone)?

There is absolutely no need for Mike Hart. The Pats already have Maroney, Morris, and Faulk. The only RB that should be considered is McFadden and that's just because of the great talent he is.

We have Morris? I wish we had him now. Mike Hart runs harder than Morris as well.

Uh yes Morris is under contract for next year isn't he? No we don't have Morris right now, but we don't have Mike Hart either. Hart runs harder? Whoopty do. Absolutely no need for the Pats to use a high pick on Mike Hart. Boy would that be dumb.

REALLY!!??

Other than picking up decent center, what was so good about it.

You drafted a kick returner with the 12th overall pick.

Don't be delusional.

When did we get the 12th pick? I thought it was 9th and I thought we took a receiver... Total mind blow, but of course, I wouldn't expect you to know any better.

Hows that working out for you this year? Did the rookies help put you guys over the top?

Rookies generally do that, huh? Samson Satele has helped big time on the line as we now have a top 12 unit, John Beck is on the cusp of getting his first start, and Ted Ginn is improving each week. We had a damn good first day of the 2007 draft.

As rock and roll detective Ford Fairlane might say: case cuh-losed.

If the FO does indeed use SF's pick, the only offensive player it should consider is an OT. Otherwise, either ILB, SS or CB should be the choice.

Why not? Welker netted a second and a seventh.

I don't know how someone would think Mike Wright is going to warrant a second round pick. He is a capable backup who shows versatility by playing on special teams. Wes Welker netter a 2nd round pick b/c he was a starting wide receiver and a kick/punt returner. Mike Wright is a backup DL (albeit playing behind a great D-line) and a filler on special teams. I think Wright is a great story (undrafted) but lets not get carried away with his value.

What do you mean by high pick? The first rounder? Did you even read my post?

Something we have to note:

Mike Vrabel
Adalius Thomas
Tedy Bruschi

All DEs weighing in the 250-270 range.

All have played some ILB for the Patriots in the last two years.

Does anyone see a prototypical ILB in the college ranks with the size of these guys and with their measurables? I don't.

That tells me that Belichick will not be looking at LBs primarily to fill those slots. If we're bringing in ILBs, it will either be as free agents, or as rookie DEs converted to ILB.

There's no way in hell the Pats use this pick. Kraft has said multiple times in the past that high first round picks are not economical.

Quote me on this. The Pats WILL NOT draft in the Top 10 of the 2008 NFL Draft.

That's easy to say, but you need a trading partner, and there's no guarantee we'll find one. So I'd be careful on your predictions, because there's at least a 50% chance we will indeed use that pick.

We had a damn good first day of the 2007 draft.
Kind of early to be bolstering such a claim, don't you think? Ginn hasn't shown much of anything and Beck hasn't even played. 1 out of 3 players contributing week in and out isn't exactly a "damn good" day after having 3 high round picks, at least not if we're evaluating at this point.

My choice would be to trade back to 10-15 range pick up a 2009 1st, 2008 2nd and 4th and grab Auburn DE/OLB Quintin Groves. He's 6'4" 254 lbs and runs a reported 4.46 40. He's a pass rush specialists who I think would make a great Adalius Thomas clone who we could put inside or out.

A 2nd rounder is a high pick. Using it on a RB would just be stupid when they don't need one and there will probably be other holes to fill.
