OT: Draft order

According to someone I was talking to about this earlier, James Laurinaitis has already stated his intentions of coming back to college next season. Now, that doesn't mean he can't change his mind down the road, but I wouldn't count on his declaring either.

Really, I could see them drafting someone like Kenny Phillips or Rey Maualuga, and they may be able to trade back to around 12-16 and still land one of them. Think about that, they could trade back to the middle of round one, grab a top prospect, and get a second, or third rounder in return.

This year I think NE should try and use a lot of their picks instead of trading them into next year, as the 2008 Patriots look to have more potential holes then recent Pats sqauds.

You could very well be correct about Laurinaitis. However, his draft stock is never going to be highter so it would make sense for him to come out early.

Why not keep it simple and use the pick to get a potential Pro-Bowl caliber player and difference-maker?

Because you can't just pick a hypothetical player like that, you have to pick a specific guy...and most of the actual top-5 candidates right aren't at high-impact positions given the Pats' current roster. And even more importantly, because that one unproven rookie would eat up almost 10% of the team's total salary cap. Think of it this way: in terms of picks and dollars, #3 = #13 + #44 + Randy Moss.

Does the Strength of Schedule thing seem backwards to anyone else? Isn't the team with the worse strength of schedule probably a weaker team than others with the same record? Seems to me that the team with the harder schedule should "win" the tie-breaker and pick first. (According to GBN's list, it appears to be the other way around.)

Actually if you have the weaker SOS, then the teams that beat you, were actually worse than the teams that beat the other team that you are tied with, so it kinda makes sense. Last year we benefited greatly by the weak NFC West (giving Seattle a very low SOS), and if Tony Romo could have actually held onto that snap, would have picked even lower.

You know whoever he drafts, we won't be expecting it. I wouldn't be shocked if we wind up with someone like Darren McFadden.

STOP!

DO NOT GET MY HOPES UP!

Darren "My Binky" McFadden.

How hilarious would this be if it turned into a top 2 pick.

I think if its top 3 we MIGHT use it because those are generally can't miss guys, besides QB'S. Anywhere between that and #15, we trade back for a late 1st this year and either a 2nd this year or 1st next. Or vet player and late 1st this year.

I saw yesterday on ESPN First Take, one of those reporters they always have on, said that Dallas covets Darren McFadden, they're not going to resign Julius Jones and Jerry Jones loves McFadden...He spent Saturday night in Fayeteville scouting his game.

Dallas thought they could take him with Cleveland's first round pick, but of course Cleveland is 5-3 and that could be a late-teens or early-twenties pick...Meanwhile Dallas' pick is going to be mid-to-late twenties.

I can think of one team though that started the year with two first-round picks, now only has one, though that could certainly be in the top-eight or so picks, giving Dallas the chance to acquire Darren McFadden with a simple two-for-one swap.

Edit: Should add that Jerry Jones apparantly is one of a small number of people who don't think Marion Barber could be an every down back.

Hmm... Miami might want 2 first round picks. :D

I think if you have the chance to get a guy who you can build the future of your defense around (a rare LB or safety), then you draft someone in the top 5. If not, you trade out. As someone stated last week, no one complained about seymour's rookie contract salary. If the next lawrence taylor is sitting at 5, I don't think BB would pass on him.

Rey Meylegua(spelling) is a franchise type of LB but in our defense..he might be too reckless/out of position. We rely on being in the right place..being smart..hes a guy who runs around the field like Ray Lewis..Lavar Arrington. He free lances a bit just to make plays and might not be very diciplined.

Sounds like a Junior Seau type. If only we had a coach that could keep those types of players in line....

You betcha. I really don't see that guy in this draft, though.

I've posted this before (and doubtless will many more times before Spring) but there are only 3 positions that I think would be worth a #5 pick for the Pats:

Shutdown CB
Merriman/Ware-type OLB
Franchise LT

Nice post! I keep hoping that Adrian Peterson's wizardry with the Vikings will persuade somebody that RB's are all that again, giving the Pats trading leverage if they end up with a crazy-high pick. Plus I'm starting to wonder whether the 6-year contract cutoff is really so important given that almost nobody's taking advantage of it.

I'm not too familiar with this year's draft yet, so I wasn't sure if there's a franchise defensive player coming out. I wonder about a CB or LT that high, since BB has had good luck with finding these guys all over the draft. Linebackers, however, for the 3-4 are a rare breed.

The NFL's league standings on NFL.com, suggest the 49ers are standing fourth from bottom of the table, and so we pick after the Fins, Rams and Jets. Unless the Jets pick up a couple of wins, which is certainly possible, I don't see us moving up any further. But I can't see us falling too much further down than eighth. It's really hard to see the 49ers winning more than two more games.

Well lets find a way to compare Sey's #6 salary to last years #6 salary.

Vernon Gholston is like Merriman/Ware type. Hes big..very strong..fast..very muscular. Hes a late 1 type of guy but could move up very well. Plays DE for Ohio State..drops back every now and then
