Art Shell and Tom Walsh on Randy Moss...

Remember these excerpts from the Globe a while back?

"Randy Moss is a player whose skills are diminishing, and he's in denial of those eroding skills," Walsh said from his ranch in Idaho, where he now lives after being fired along with Shell and Oakland's entire offensive staff following last season's 2-14 debacle. "Randy was a great receiver but he lacked the work ethic and the desire to cultivate any skills that would compensate for what he was losing physically later in his career.

"He told me last year, 'I'm too old to practice on Wednesday and Thursday, but I'm not too old to play on Sunday.' Did they start a senior league?"

And then there's this...

"This is a guy who couldn't practice last year but he's going to jump up and run a 40 for somebody?" Shell said. "I never had a problem with him, but he's one of those guys where it's always everybody else's fault but his. They'll find out Randy can't run consistently anymore. He'll drive [Tom] Brady and [Bill] Belichick crazy."


What a couple of short-sighted TOOLS. Neither will ever work again in the NFL. You are TERRIBLE at your jobs and Randy Moss is all-world at his. You look stupid before the entire world. Ha ha.

That's what Moss was like in Oakland. They went by what they saw. That Moss turned that around didn't really make it wrong when they said it. They just went by what Moss did for the Raiduh's which wasn't much of anything.

When you think about it, Moss did as much for Oakland as THEY did.

Sounds like they're the one's looking to place blame elswehere.

What all that matters is what happens here......Would you want to play from them????

It's never right to badmouth a player who leaves. You just wish him luck in the future and let it go.

I have no doubt Moss is treated somewhat differently. Not allowed to slack off, per se, but allowed some leeway as long as he keeps hi eye on the goal of winning.

We have seen Belichick is adaptable and flexible if that's the best way to get the maximum performance from individual players. The rest of the team will accept that because they understand why and because BB has enormous credibility to draw upon.

Shell, however, has likely no idea of how to do that. If if he did, he didn't have any built up goodwill from other players to draw upon. And Shell didn't have a Brady to act as a lieutenant. He also saddled himself with Walsh, wasn't Walsh the guy who was out of football for years before Shell hired him?

By the way, I laughed out loud last night when someone (I think on NFL Network) called Moss "a consummate professional". Wow.

could've just been a way to try to get a chip on Randy's shoulder so he would go back to dominating. Alas, it didn't work... all the better for us

Moss was a total dog in OAK. Moss wasn't motivated to play for a lousy team and he probably had little respect for that franchise and coaching staff.

Thats not the case this year but there is truth to his behavior out there last year. It seems like Moss has put all this behind him based on this year.

Moss and the Pats are till in the honeymoon phase of their relationship. The real test will come when there is some adversity and we will see how Moss responds.

I don't disagree with that idea, but the point I'm making is that any bad thing that's been said about Moss in Oakland is true. He may have the greatest season for a WR this year in NFL history with the Patriots, but it doesn't change that. I live a short distance from Oakland and I read the Contra Costa Times every day and work with several Raiduh's season ticket holders. Just about every Mon ot Tues there'd be a column in the paper about how Moss played. Some would detail how many plays he'd just stand there at the LOS until the play was over and walk back to the huddle. We can say that's because Oakland sucked or Shell sucked or whatever. But he sucked, too. I think he's doing great as a Patriot. But he was who they said he was in Oakland.

i love that moss screwed over the raiders. i will always hate the raiders for stingley.

They claimed it wasn't just his effort there - that he was done. That's why they're tools. This isn't difficult.

Anyone watching could easily have felt the same way. No matter how you want to spin it, Moss sucked in Oakland and looked washed up.

I'm not saying he didn't. But anyone who watched also saw a guy who was pissed off, behaving badly and not putting out the effort - as opposed to actually having "lost" it. Meanwhile, here you are defending the coaching and analysis put forth by two guys who have ZERO CREDIBILITY, two guys who show that clearly the game has past them by, 7-step drops and all. They failed and were terrible at making good judgments. I'm not sure why you would give those two in particular the benefit of the doubt.

I'm not defending Shell. I'm saying ANYONE who saw what Moss was in Oakland, could easily say the same thing about him. Why do you think BBioli didn't give him any guarnteed money. They weren't sure what they were getting either and wanted protection. Maybe he'd be another Duane Starks.

Randy Moss taking the last 2 years off was the best thing for his career. He didn't have to take punishment with those bunch of losers. There is a reason both Shell and Walsh were out of the league for so long and that was because they sucked. Apparently Al Davis didn't see that.

Moss wanted out of Oakland. He moaned about practicing, went at half speed when he felt like it and got his wish. Shell and Walsh won't admit that, instead we got the "diminshed skills" stuff. BTW, I too hate the Raiders but a Raider team that sucks on an annual isn't good for the NFL nor is it any fun to really hate a team that blows every year. I mean, before Peyton Manning did any of us hate the Jim Harbaugh Colts? Personally, I have no problem with the Chargers going back into their post-Dan Fouts era hole in the AFC West and making the Raiders the hated team on top out there again.
