Chris Mortenson said tonight on NFL Primetime that many GMs around the league are upset because the Patriots won't really be punished by losing the first round pick because they'll just use the money saved in free agency. He then pointed out all the Pats FA pickups over the last few years from Colvin to AD, ETC. No need to bring up Seymour, Warren, Wilfork, Mankins, Graham, Watson, Maroney, Meriweather in the first round.

He then threw in that if they were really that smart about drafting they would have taken Tom Brady in the first round not the sixth. My jaw hit the ground and I changed channels before I could rewind to make sure it was tongue in cheek so I'm not sure but these days who knows.

This is one of several guys who was certain the Pats wouldn't be players in last years FA market because they are too cheap, which was the bash the Pats flavor of the month. So we've gone from draft wizards to FA mongers in 6 months simply because that makes people's argument. We no longer can draft apparently even though we have zero first round busts in the BB era.

He also brought up that the GMs feel it's little punishment since we already have another first. Note to league, if you trade for extra picks it doesn't equal extra punishment because you have them.

I won't even get into the fact that first rounders at the bottom of the first are pretty cheap for 5 years.

I understand he was reporting what some GMs thought but his tone was basically acknowledging their statements as fact. There is zero journalist integrity left it's all about selling the hot story.

Mortenson is becoming a bigger *** hole each day since the news of the cameragate thing. What a d!ck!

Everybody who's quoted as a source (or GM) as to dissatisfaction of the penalty
has an obvious reason for saying what they're saying.
I think even the reporters are losing sight of this.
So Mort says GMs wanted a stiffer penalty??
Well, duh!!!!

Oh boo hoo! What a JOKE.

This is proof positive that the GMs care about is taking down the Patriots. This is their opening and they are trying to blow it wide open. We should be penalized even more because we have made smart FA and draft decisions in the past? These idiots are out of control and should be b*tchslapped back to reality.

Win on the field or with your football smarts, you pieces of ****.

Actually this whole camera gate has been a blessing because now I know who all the azzholes in the media are that can't be trusted.

When will this reporting crap end?
Can't we move on? Who cares what other GM's think, the decision has been made, the pats have accepted it and moved on.

GMs like who, I wonder. (Ahem.)

It is absolutely incredulous that people trivialize the loss of the first round draft pick. No, nobody will be able to say "man, if we only had that first rounder two years ago we would have won the superbowl again!" However, look at how much of this team is from the first round of the draft: Seymour, Warren, Wilfork to name a few.

Also, Mortensen is a buffon. If you can get a guy in the 6th round (Tom Brady) why on earth would you pass on quality choices in rounds 1-5?

I don't think Mortensen lied about any of this, but if it is true then most of the GMs in the league are idiots.

1) We Welker costs NE substantially more than a pick in the 28-32 range. Is the player available for that amount of money really going to be anywhere near the level of a first round talent - particularly with NE picking?

2) Like you said, the fact that NE has a 1st rounder is irrelevent. Why?

Because NE chose not to pick someone last year you fools!

IF NE had picked David Harris, would GMs *really* be asking for NE to forfeit a 1st rounder AND be forced to waive Harris? Whoever thinks that SF's 1st has any bearing on this whatsoever is a complete moron.

Give it a rest everyone. Your envy is showing.

speaking of which who are the key free agents next year?

Can we lock up Moss during this season if he is willing to sign?

I think BB should be taken to Foxboro Common and hanged by the neck until dead.

Words fail. :bricks:

First, the talk was multiple picks and people said "wow!"

Then the talk was maybe as high as a first day pick, and people said "wow, that's tough!"

Then the talk was maybe as high as a second rounder and a lower pick, like a 5th, and people said "wow, what a penalty!"

Then when it's a first rounder, people say "not enough."

I also love the argument that ""they have 2 first rounders anyway." So if you accumulate picks and forego the chance to draft more players this year for some next year, somehow you have extra picks you are less entitled to?

BTW, when did Polian and Tannenbaum become "many GMs'"???

I dont get the 'we have 2 first rounds' thing.
Just because have 2 doesnt mean the one we lose is going to be a lesser player than if we only had that one.

What they're really saying is because this franchise is so good at all aspects (drafting, free agency, coaching) that we should be handicapped for it

The GMs are probably mad because they were hoping for a long

suspension and not have to match wits with BB.

haha. Like I aid, losing #1 actually gives us more cap room to sign Asante, Moss and Donte ! whoooooooooohooooooo

I hope he's kidding because this makes no sense. Brady was projected to be a 2nd day pick. Why would you pay 1st round money to a player that you could get later in the draft?

Who is Chris Mortenson anyways? Does he even report anything of value? Can ESPN just can his ass.
