Ravens lobby for rule change on fumbles

Watched that video, can't really understand what the Ravens want changed here like, at all. The guy either fumbles or chucks it towards the goal line. Either way it's a touchback for the Redskins and should be.

What am I missing?
That's what Harbaugh had to say:

“If you fumble it out of bounds anywhere else, the team that loses the ball gets the ball right there. If you fumble it through the end zone, you lose the ball and you lose 20 yards of field position. [That’s] pretty hard one to figure out.”

Obviously Harbaugh conveniently forgot to mention that if the offense fumbles it out of its own EZ it's a safety. Two points and the ball for the opposition. Should we change that one too?

Seeing that play and the rule I have to think of the Champ Baily fumble in the 2005 playoffs. Without the camera angle it was really hard to overturn this, but have to wonder how that game would've gone if it was called a fumble out of the EZ. Well, even so the INT hurt, right at the goal line with a chance to take the lead late in the third.

I think we need to review the fake field goal rules, punt coverage rules. And the second foot down rules.

Whenever a fake field goal play is attempted, the holder/kicker is not allowed to be rushed.
In punt coverage, clear open lanes must be made to allow the returner to run back for a TD.
Defenders are not allowed to be within 5 feet of a receiver that is near/approaching the sideline so the receiver can catch the ball with two feet down.

Harbaby would approve! Must send these solutions to him ASAP!

harbaugh's a child.

seriously, **** him, ozzie, joe flacco, and all of baltimore!!

This rule is one of Florio's personal little pet causes, and not just since this last Sunday (although he did use the Ravens game to discuss what he calls "the worst rule in football"). I don't really care whether they change it or not. You never know what is going to happen in a game so there's no way to know if the rule will help or hurt you going forward.
Actually the worst rule in football is PSI limits on gameballs. It has never been enforced before or since January 18, 2015....and it never will be.

I still can't believe that the nyjfl collected psi data throughout the 2015 season, never released the results, and swept it under the rug with the vague statement of "no violations were found"

The rule is a vestige of the old touchback rule. If you threw a pass into the end zone and it fell incomplete, it was a touchback. The rule was changed in the late 1950s.

It makes the stats of Johnny Unitas that much more impressive!

People who think this rule change would be a good thing forget that teams used to intentionally push the ball out of the end zone. Yeah, that's a penalty too but now you're relying on the refs to see it and call it and I don't know about you but I'm about relying on the referees less, not more.
This is a great point. Thanks for mentioning this. It took me a while to process what you mean, but now I understand.

Let's say the Patriots fumble at the two-yard line into the end zone. There's a loose ball sitting in the back corner of the end zone. Martellus Bennett and Von Miller are both attempting to recover the loose ball. There isn't any incentive for Bennett to attempt to recover the ball, so he can just "accidentally" knock it out of bounds instead of trying to dive on top of it, at which point the Pats get the ball back.

Bet Belichick regrets getting that tool that job.
Have you considered the possibility that Bill knew and it was a bit of sabotage? :)

The rule they lost on IS kinda stupid, though. Usually Harbaugh is full of **** but he's got a point this time.
As archstaton543 said, the rule is so a guy being tackled at the one can't just throw the ball into the endzone and out of bounds to get a TD.

We got robbed in the playoffs in 2005 in Denver because this rule did not get called for us. When Ben Watson ran down Champ Bailey and popped the ball loose it crossed the pylon. Should have been our ball at the 20 instead of Denver's at the one.

Before the season even began, Goodell was quoted saying they would be collecting the data and that they were still determining what they would do with that data.. fast forward to end of the year, and they say "What do you mean collecting data? We were never collecting data, we were performing spot checks to make sure no rules were being violated and we're happy to announce that there were no violations"

Just pure ****ing scum

This is why I despise the Baltimore franchise even more so than the NY Jets. You can laugh at the Jets, but this franchise makes me sick. They whine and whine like angsty teenagers and are so annoying. Fricken Batltiwhore Ravens.

In fairness to the Ravens, that is the most ridiculous rule in the NFL. It fumbles out of bounds on the one inch line, the team retains the ball. One inch farther into the end zone and the ball is given to the other team on the 20. How is that remotely fair?

The intentional push out of the end zone is a different rule though. That is illegal for both teams.

Well then be fair and call it the most ridiculous rule in the game of football. It isn't a NFL rule.
