This is a must-read story on Josh McDaniels

I'm shocked people don't realize how bad of a job he did in Denver. There's an entire website devoted to josh mcdaniels stinking up his time in Denver. Google it. He came off as an arrogant ****y punk who players hated, he traded away all the good talent, he made terrible GM decisions, and the assistants hated his guts. I know Broncos fans who are convinced mcdaniels sabatoged Denver as a New England spy because they can't imagine a coach doing that poor of a job while trying his best.

Good to see Josh has learned his lessons. He's a Great O coordinator, maybe he can get one more shot as a HC.

I'm shocked that people still think that websites and player comments are the real story, and ignore just how toxic the Cutler situation had become.

Or, to put it another way, BB had Kosar, and McDaniels had Cutler.

Must read is understating it. What a tremendous article. I had no idea how bad things were in Denver.

Edit - Just like it's a damn shame that the timing won't work out to keep JimmyG (barring something unexpected), it's equally a damn shame that the timing won't work out for Josh to succeed Bill (again, barring something unexpected).
If it were 5 years in the future, I could see Josh and JG leading this team another 10-15 years.

Jay Cutler sucks.

Yeah, not sure that he traded away all the talent given that they were in the Super Bowl two years later.

Pompei doesn't sugar coat it, either. He makes it clear that the Denver version of McDaniels was a real piece of work.

I'm going to show this article to my daughter, who is trying to help run a high-school organization with a group of boys who are all very smart and talented...and all far more eager to impress on everyone just how smart and talented they are then to help others develop skills and feel valued. McDaniels' story is a good general lesson on leadership, and maybe a ray of hope that arrogant young men actually can learn and grow. :)

Agreed. If there were a 101 of Leadership: How Not To Do It, this would be an assigned text.

It's truly astonishing that anyone who had risen to a position of responsibility (not to mention, married and had kids) could have made such obvious mistakes in dealing with other people. I have a friend who is an "executive coach", mentoring senior businessmen and public officials. If I were to hire Josh McD as a Head Coach, I'd insist he brought one along with him.

They were in the super bowl two years later because of John Elways GM moves. Signing Emanuel Sanders, Aquib Talib, Demarcus Ware, TJ Ward, Brandon Marshall Chris Harris Jr drafting Von Miller, Derek Wolfe, etc

Elway spent a ton of money and pats fans laughed at Elways moves as over spending and putting them in cap hell. But I got to give the man credit. He's getting what he paid for, that is an elite D.

Mcdaniels GM moves were a joke. He drafted tebow in the first round, traded a first round pick for midget nickel back Alphonso Smith, over drafted Richard Quinn in the second round, traded a super stud in his prime like Brandon Marshall away for peanuts, traded Peyton Hillis for mackin on his wife. Only one draft pick from Mcdaniels years is still on the team

Elway deserves full credit for rebuilding that team. Elway is getting what he paid for

Josh Mcdaniels is a great coordinator in New England but let's not rewrite history about his time in Denver, his time there was an epic failure

So what are you saying? That Mcdaniels didnt do a horrible job in Denver?

that picture says more about todd haley than josh mcdaniels:

Todd Haley Apologizes For Not Shaking Josh McDaniels' Hand

"I also want to touch on a post-game situation that I know, or it sounds like, has become a big deal," Haley told reporters, "and I do want to apologize for me not shaking Josh's hand after the game. I do believe in doing what's right and that was not right. I probably let emotions of the situation get me too much. I apologize and I apologize to the fans and to Denver and to Josh."

As for what caused those emotions, Haley wouldn't say.

"No I think, Doug [Tucker], that I don't think that's necesary to get into it," Haley said. "I think it's very necessary that I let everybody know that I would do that over again at the end and it wasn't the right thing to do. [Did you communicate it to Josh?] No,I felt like, again, communicating it to the majority, or anyone that was watching it, to let them know how I felt and that's important."

Haley clearly knows that wasn't the right thing to do and, even though it would make the story juicier, he won't talk about the reasons why he was upset at the time.

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said he wasn't sure why Haley didn't shake his hand. “I don’t know. Im not sure about that,” McDaniels said in a video on DenverBroncos.com (via PFT). “I was proud of the way we played.”

I'm saying that anyone who ignores the problems he inherited, and the impact they had on his time there, is an idiot.

  1. Owner losing his mind to Alzheimer's
  2. Following a local legend in Shanahan
  3. Dealing with a pampered, overrated, out-of-control prima donna at QB in Cutler
  4. Dealing with a WR who was already pissed at the organization for reasons that had nothing at all to do with McDaniels, and who was willing to do whatever it took to get out of Denver
  5. Declining team talent

McDaniels wasn't perfect, or anything near that. But he had almost no chance in hell of succeeding in that place.

Are you saying it was a mistake to trade Jay Cutler? Exactly what has he done that would make you think trading him was a bad move?
Brandon Marshall? He has only worn out his welcome in 2 other places, now working on a 3rd, and has yet to set foot on a playoff football field.

A little heavy on the "faith" stuff, but I really enjoyed it and have forwarded it already.

What I took away from it is how he learned the value of those around him, and how they can help you succeed. Even the ones that you may have perceived as your "enemy" at one point in your life. The one thing we have seen BB admit publicly is that he is always on the lookout for information from whomever that person or coach may be. Brad Stevens is a perfect example. Tony Dungy, hate him or not, thrives on providing leadership based on his experiences and knowledge. That is a valuable commodity to have.
As much as we value football at it's break neck speed, these guys have created relationships that started long before we even knew who they were.

Think about it for one second: Buddy Ryan went toe to toe with BB since what year in the NFL? Do you think BB didn't know who Rex Ryan was, or any of the Ryan family for that matter? Or the Landry's, Knoll's, or Mannings? These families are entrenched with one another, almost in a sense that wins and loses don't matter.

That's really why it's so upsetting that the shield has done the things it has to BB over the years. What did he do that was so bad, to eschew this type of hatred from the league he was a part of since he was a child.

That's why the Jets can burn in hell, forever, and that's why the league office won't be strong until it's one person for every team, voting for a Commish.

You're not upset that you suck, you're upset that a Hall of Fame coach told you go to hell on a table napkin. If it upsets you more, he had to borrow a pen, and a napkin. At least you got to keep Parcells.

Sorry, I went into a rant.

I truly believe that BB is a savant compared to the other coaches, they just don't see what he sees. They haven't seen what he's seen. It's not fair, I see that as a Pat's fan myself. For BB to take Josh under his wing again, says more to me about Josh than it does about Bill.

I'll root for the Lions, Giants, Colts, or the Bears if it means I get a chance to see Josh succeed. I just hope he comes to the Jags, they would love him down here.
