2017 Draft Prospect Thread

I wonder sometimes if people really overthink the top prospects. McCaffrey is really talented. He's a fine player, and worth a first round pick to an organization that will utilize his skills.

Depends on the player. Sometimes teams over think and sometimes don't think enough. Take Tavon Austin and Johnny Manziel. Teams didn't think enough. Yes Austin had a lot of talent but was likely destined to be a role player due to size and frame and is a better athlete than football player. Teams over thought those basic on the surface premises and talked themselves into in.

Johnny Manziel is another guy teams didn't think enough about. He was clearly cancer and instantly you would think do not touch him but you start to talk yourself into him. Maybe he will grow up or you can change him. Maybe just stop and look at the guy and notice what is clearly showing and just be honest about it.

So it can go both ways. However sometimes thinking a considerable amount of time and investing that time can help you with a player.

I just wanna say this and it will get hate im sure. I do like McCaffrey but do i like him in the top 32? No. He has talent but i don't see the one thing that jumps off the screen to me. His quickness is okay not amazing. He relies a lot on the stutter step and head bob rather than breaking ankles with Edelman like quickness. He has good vertical speed but he seems 1 step too slow to take the top off an NFL D. He has savvy and good hands and is versatile. I see him like an "Amendola" type player that can run too. While he has a lot of good traits you want he is not that game breaker or game changer consistently you'd want in the first round.

While a solid good player to have would i spend a 1st on him? No. Now a 2nd or 3rd? I'd certainly consider it.

Could i be wrong? Yep. Would not be the first time. But re-watch his tape carefully cause I don't think I should be alone on this.

If someone could tell me what they see that i don't that makes this kid a 1st round talent I'd be willing to listen. I am speaking of physical skill traits. like speed, quickness, power, height, size, hand eye, ect..

I am in the same boat. I want to see what everyone else sees, but I feel like I am missing something.

It's why I think The combine will be so important for him. His 3 cone and 40 will have to be elite for him to make me take notice. He could just make everything look easier than it is, but I have my doubts.

Good call on the amendola comp opposed to the Edelman comp. I totally agree.

Washington had his number last night. He was shut down.

Not sure he falls to us at 32, but I do see other teams duplicating washington's strategy and causing his numbers to drop.

Could be interesting.

Texas's FS, something Hall, is having a solid game. First time I've seen him play. Looks like a really good tackler, unlike the rest of his team.

This receiver draft looks very weak to me so far.

The only names that interest me at all are Mike Williams, who doesn't really fit our mold for receiver, Travis Rudolph, who seems like he could play the slot, and courtland sutton. Sutton is the guy who intrigues me the most, since he's got great size at 6'4 and 215-220, good burst and tremendous body control. Usually at that size, they are lumbering type athletes, but sutton carries his weight well. He has a bit of shake off the line as well, to go with his natural hand strength to gain separation.

Receiver isn't a huge priority, but they need to start building the skill positions up with several guys beginning to wind down their careers.

this Lamar jackson guy seems pretty good, was there any real talk about him before this year? I know he is just a sophmore

Most of the talk was about him eventually transitioning to rb/wr. That is all but a done conversation now that he has turned in to Mike Vick.

so people think he can be a QB in the NFL?

It would be crazy not to try. He has accuracy issues, but he has a pro coach and a pro arm. He has a lot of time before he needs to worry about Sunday's.

Put it another way, if he didn't get a notch better than he is right now, he'd still most likely go first or second. He's got that much talent.

Sutton's the SMU guy right? Is he draft eligible?

For the Oregon fans out there, how has Pharoah Brown looked since coming back from his knee injury? He seemed to have a very rare skillset prior to the injury, but two years is a long journey back.

Thanks to Daniel Jeremiah, I might have my first real binky.

Two players gaining a lot of steam in personnel circles -- North Carolina QB Mitch Trubisky and WR Ryan Switzer -- both put on a show today in a last-second win over Florida State. Trubisky showed tremendous poise and accuracy throughout the game and Switzer made a ton of plays. Switzer is a clone of Julian Edelman. He's so quick in the slot and he catches everything (14-158 today)

So I watched a game of his, and the thing is, he is!

No hate, its your opinion.

I personally love McCaffrey. I think he's gonna be what everyone expected Reggie Bush to be, if he goes to the right offense. He has great vision, and follows his blocks well. He might not be an Olympic sprinter, but he has great speed. I don't think he has the size to run it up the gut 30 times a game, but he's a game changer in every way. He can kill you on the run, pass or ST.

The negatives on him to me are his size. Another thing...Name me the last Stanford RB that REALLY made an impact in the NFL?

All that, I'd take him at 32. No hesitation. He's a much better runner than James White, and a better receiver than Dion Lewis. He can also play ST. He's too versatile

I think he will have a very heavy swing in perception among scouts.

On paper, he's everything you look for in a kid. Hard working, football blood, high character, extremely productive for multiple seasons in a real offense. And high end versatility.

The question will lie in whether he can be as versatile at the next level without high end athleticism. It's why I am so interested in his combine, since he doesn't jump off the screen like many of the other prospects do.

He will be a safe pick to play for awhile and probably from day 1, but he may never be more than a 3rd down back and occasional return man.

Thanks for this! I have been looking hard for slot receivers, and mostly trying to fit guys in to roles they don't play regularly.

He looks like he has a lot of the skills that we will need, and need very soon.

One other receiver I have enjoyed watching lately is Zay Jones from Eastern Carolina. He runs just about every route, with good speed and really solid hands. He isn't the biggest or fastest, but seems to think the game well and can play in every receiver position on the field.

A decent comparison would probably be Stefon diggs (in college). There is a lot to work with there.

This is from last year, but he's gone to another level this year.
