The evening started with a report that JJ Watt needs surgery, but will be ready for camp (EDIT: I meant to say ready for week 1 - he certainly won't be ready for camp since camp starts next week). That timetable keeps getting pushed back further and further.

Now we are not only hearing 6-8 weeks, but Rapoport has amended his report to say 8 weeks is the "best case scenario".

The Texans come to Foxboro exactly 9 weeks from tonight.

Watt could be out up to 10 weeks

That's a lot of weeks of guaranteed money.

Funny you mention that because according to Florio, since he was working out on his own, it is considered a "non-football injury."

Now I do not believe for one single second that the Texans would withhold money from their superstar for hurting himself working out, but it was an interesting observation.

Seems a bit unfair that an injury suffered while training for football away from the facility would qualify as a "non-football injury", but interesting.

This one may be difficult to predict and I'm guessing that we'll go right up to the deadline, or at least something close to it. I've seen some people recover fairly quickly from the herniated disc surgery (discectomy), while others take much longer. Watt is in good physical shape, so he has that going for him. He's also very tough.

That said, there's a higher rate of re-herniation for the first 12 weeks, and they may take it cautiously with him. As a matter of fact, they should in my opinion. Even if he returns, he most likely won't be his normal disruptive self until about halfway through the season.

That's what I am expecting. He will have surgery and they will be VERY careful in bringing him back. He is their franchise, no need to rush.

I hate seeing a great player like him injured. I gained a lot of respect for him watching Hard Knocks last year.

Yeah I wasn't sure how the rules with that worked.... didn't realize that was the case.

On another note, I wonder how key guys such as Tyrann Mattheiu and Shaq Lawson are progressing during their rehabs? It may take a while longer to get a more accurate time table. With JJ Watt added to the mix, we could be getting a bit lucky (yes, I realize the irony) for the first 4 games.

It won't make missing Brady any easier, but it may help to increase our chances of victory.

Watt has been very durable during his stellar career, hitherto. One has to wonder if his body is starting to break down from all of the collisions at or around the LOS, after the surgery on his core, and now this back surgery that could sideline him 8 + weeks.

While I don't always agree with what he does (though I'm a genius at recognizing my own ignorance) this very scenario of JJ Watt being injured for a non-contact non-football injury is why I'm a long term subscriber to the Belichick philosophy of building an NFL team, ie: not paying Revis and not allowing one player's health/attitude to hold your franchise and cap hostage.

I wish this was a bit more of an obvious thing to say. :)

Once the core becomes weakened due to inactivity due to surgery or injury, issues with the back often follow. I'm currently going through it myself. I was told about 6 weeks off for white collar work after surgery, with that becoming 6-8 for the more labor intensive jobs. I think one can assume that Watt's status will definitely be in jeopardy for the matchup.

We'll know a lot more about who's really running the show down in Houston, as we all know that they should play it cautiously, but will they?

That sucks for Houston. I can see ole "teapot" O'Brien boiling over. Lol

Seriously, a big void on that DLine. Watt completely changes a game and opposing game plan. As it pertains specifically to NE, Jimmy G is shorter than Brady, and Watt is the best in the at getting his hands up. His absence should make things a lot easier for Jimmy G. This is, of course, assuming this report is accurate.

If that happened to one of our players, some around here would immediately speculate that his career is not only over, but that the family is also planning his funeral.

Heck of a player but that drama queen will be there. Seems like all of these big time players miraculously get healed up just in time to play the Patriots.

Even if he does play he wouldn't have had any training camp or games under his belt.

I never wish for injuries but Karma can be a beautiful thing.
