Rumor (speculation): Fitzpatrick to sign with Patriots?

I'm going to say this once and not again....the Patriots are NOT signing Ryan Fitzpatrick.

God bless him if he'd turn down 12m dollars (as a starter) to come here for about ten percent of that while knowing how he'd be cut after week four.

Makes perfect sense, right? Win/win for both Fitzpatrick and Bill Belichick--who's probably up right now foaming at the mouth in his attempt to pay 1.2m (my 10 percent hypothetical) to the clipboard holder for a month.

its a pretty smart move for both parties

fitz wants starter money, the patriots want to **** with the jets.

bring fitz in and offer him a prorated contract with huge bonuses if he starts weeks 5-16 but pretty friendly numbers the first four weeks.

he gets to be around the patriots, ride the bench, and make some money, and he gets to shove it in the jets face.

I think it'd be a terrible idea for both parties. Why would Fitzpatrick turn down 12m dollars this year to make way less than that? He'd also be screwing himself with lack of job security, because the position is no longer available after 4 weeks.

Better yet, why in the world would Belichick consider paying much of anything to the clipboard holder who will be cut in a month?

If you want the cherry on top you can factor in how Belichick would've likely been ready to bring in an outsider ASAP, due to the unfamiliarity of our complex system, as well as the short time period to try and learn it. He could've had someone here the whole time if he wanted to, and all it would've taken up is a spot on the 90 man roster.

How about Matt Flynn? What's he up to these days? Where are guys like Cassel or Hoyer? I think any of those would come much cheaper, and already know the specifics of our system.

Plus, if he played for us 1-4 and then was cut; you can bet the jesters would pay him that 12M for the final 12 games just to have his inside knowledge of the Patriots on their sideline for the two games against Pats in that final 12.

I'd rather have Fitzy join the FO and with his math/economics degree from Hahvud figure out how the keep High, Collins, Malcolm and Sheard AND keep him away from the Jests.

That alone is worth $12m :p

It would be the funniest thing in the history of NFL free agency. We'd actually benefit more from the fact that it would mean that the Jets would be stuck with Geno.

sign manning as a back up...and then he gets cut....wasn't good enough to even back up brady.

Wel, I can think of one benefit of that move: Goodell would be all in on the Guyer/Al Jazeera investigation before the ink would be dry on the contract...

one upside for fitzpatrick even if he gets cut after 4 games would be that if the patriots won the superbowl, they might take pity on him and give him a ring.

one positive is that he named his youngest son brady.

one negative is that he's managed to become a starter for every team he's been on because the starting QB got injured:

Rams - replaced Jamie Martin (concussion)
Bengals - replaced Carson Palmer twice (torn ligament and tendon in elbow)
Bills - replaced Trent Edwards (concussion)
Titans - replaced Jake Locker twice (hip, lisfranc)
Texans - replaced Ryan Mallett (torn pectoral)
Jets - replaced Geno Smith (broken jaw)

i think he graduated harvard summa cum laude in voodoo economics.

been thinking of this for a while....would love it just to piss goodell and his lying fraudulent co conspirators at park ave off.

Flynn's bad, Cassel's backing up Mariota, and Hoyer's backing up Cutler. The veteran market is pretty crappy right now after Fitzpatrick. Vick, Flynn, Yates, Clausen, and Freeman are the headliners. I'd rather start Brissett.

My bet would be a Flynn-level FA QB coming in to compete with Brissett for the backup spot behind Garoppolo, but taking Fitz from the Jests would be too funny.

I'd take Yates or Flynn if Garoppolo went down, but Brissett might still start over them. You'd just need another QB on the roster regardless.

Only reason Fitz signs here would be if he just really, REALLY hates the NYJ. No better place for Jest haters.

It's possible some other team will really need QB help by Week 5 due to an injury, and pay up at that time. But it's unlikely. He would have to have Jester hate as his #1 priority - which is fine by me!

why ?? you guys want to tank a season like the colts and 6ers ?

Honestly I think that'd be better than being mediocre with Fitz. I mean it's not like Fitz has any potential of growth or much improvement. He's an 11 year vet who's never made the playoffs.

If Fitz was 25... sure let go for it and try to improve. But he's not and it would just be wasted cap space and time.

However I don't think starting Geno is tanking. He went 8-8 his ROOKIE year with a bad team around him. Now he'll have a team that allowed Ryan Fitzpatrick to win 10 games. So Geno can certainly do just as well. Whether that equates to another 10 wins against this much tougher schedule is another story.

Basically, no sense wasting time with a journeyman QB who has a habit of doing just well enough to fool teams out of money and then ends up being a mistake.

Jets fans and writers continue to flatter themselves by thinking Belichick thinks about them at all.

Agreed. But to be fair, some here think the whole league cares enough about the Pats and Brady to have some big conspiracy against them.

All fan bases have the wackos.

Explain to me why deflategate -- the Wells report and Goodell's subsequent penalties levied against the Patriots -- was not an anti-Patriots conspiracy perpetrated by the league office.
