OT: Broncos offer Von Miller $70 million guaranteed

They wouldn't have that much money if there was a starting caliber QB on the roster.
But that's also why I'm asking, friend. They were spending like crazy even when Manning and his big ass contact was in the books. In 2014 when the media proclaimed arms race was happening between us and them, the popular notion wad that they'd be in cap hell for the next few seasons. That never seemed to materialize and they still have pretty much all the same players, sans Julius Thomas and a few other good but not great players. Although we fared pretty well last season, we had to let a bunch of dudes walk at the end of 2014. It just seemed backwards to me. Who cares anyway. Even with an overpaid Von Miller we're better and will presumably be for a lot longer.

LT in his prime wouldnt be worth that much locked in money.

No one is but if Miller gets that kind of cake LT, Reggie White, Ray Lewis and maybe Deion deserve it as well.

Good god. Miller isn't worth anywhere near that. They are paying elite QB to a OLB. Miller is very good at what he does, but that's an absurd amount of money to offer him. This will essentially be the first domino to fall in the team all but falling apart.

Sure, there was a bunch who said that the Broncos sold out their future. There were several who dug deeper and realized that the Broncos had a bunch of good players on rookie contracts (mostly guys drafted by McDaniels), and that the Broncos wouldn't be able to resign them all. That has proven true, and the Broncos are no longer the power house that they used to be. Last year, the Pats were beat up and the rest of the field wasn't that good. The Broncos had an easy path to the Superbowl and took down a paper tiger.

Elway is taking a huge risk here. Before last season (a contract season) Miller has has a bit of history of disappearing in the playoffs. He has had a bit of an injury history. He is one failed drug test away from a year long suspension (although I would assume there will be language in the contract protecting the Broncos from that).

When Miller is on, he is an elite player. But he has a lot of red flags that other elite players do not.

Good thing the Pats got something for Chandler Jones this year because Jones is going to get probably $40-50 million guaranteed if Miller is getting $70 million guaranteed.

Jones better have a hell of a year in order to get that kind of money.

Not really. He just needs a repeat of last season. If he has another 12 sacks, he will have 48 sacks for his career. That is enough to get a mid level contract like that for a double digit sack player. Guys who can rush the QB get paid.

Reparations? What, too soon?

Oh god....don't go down the reparations route. That'll start a whole other discussion and I'm tired.

This is stupid money and it's definitely going to impact any team trying to sign their top players, and we are already seeing that regardless of position not one team has signed their franchise player. I think it's the reason we haven't seen any of the Patriots impending free agents sign a new deal. Elway has shown himself to be a chump by doubling the guaranteed money at gunpoint. This deal will screw the Broncos and any other team that buckles to demands like these.

$12M a year for one of the best ever. The issue is the guarantee. If there is an injury clause that reduces this number in case of injury in the early years, then this is well worth it.

Von Miller is elite, but one of the best ever? I am not sure about that.

$115 million over 6 years amounts to $19 million per year on average. That's elite QB money.

Donkeys are dumb to offer this and not just franchise him each of the next two years. Miller can say he won't show up, but if he doesn't and skips the first 10 games, he's not going to get a better free agent offer next year.

Looks like the two sides are close to a deal. This is good because it screws up the broncos salary cap AND players who get that kind of guaranteed money become lazy AND one more PED/drug violation and he's suspended for a year and the donkeys are on the hook for his salary.

when you single handedly win a superbowl, you deserve to be the highest paid player ever.

Larry Allen says hi.

Miller is a very good player but he's not the best defensive player in football Watt is, and I would much rather have Luke Keuchly, who is one of the best all around football players I have seen.

Unfortunately this could mean the end of Hightower and Collins, I'm guessing their asking price has gone from the 60 million 30 guaranteed range to the 80-90 million with 50 plus guaranteed range, and I don't believe Belichick will go anywhere near those higher numbers for either.

Wow, he's good and everything, and I know his position is very important, but I don't know if any non-QB is worth that damn much guaranteed. Seriously, and I'm not hating, but how do the Broncos have all this money?
They're not spending any money on a QB at the moment...

Folks here have said this for a decade or more, every time the Broncos sign a player for a lot of money.

The patriots have gotten our top player to pay for half-price (for years). Not everyone can get their top player to do that.

This guy was a playoff dud until his contract year, and will continue to be a playoff dud if he gets that kind of money.
