The 25 most-hated villains in New England Patriots history

Tyree and Manningham? No way. They made plays against us, as lucky as they were. That's not being a villain.

Tomlinson - yes.

Might as well throw Matt Walsh in there too for obvious reasons.

1. Jack Tatum

2. Ben Dreith

3. James Orthwein

Each of these individuals committed specific, tangible irreparable harm to the franchise, its members and fans. I'm not discounting the value of a lost first round draft pick, but the league clowns have mostly stirred public opinion against the team, and that has only to do with propaganda. Since I do not care what people think, it doesn't matter. I am grateful that these non substantive crusades against the team have exposed all of the present and former players, coaches, front office personnel, fans and public figures who accept them and proceed to slander and discredit the Pats as being complete, unmitigated morons whose opinions are totally worthless.

Goodell is #1 by a mile in my book. Pure unadulterated hatred for this man. Can't we just sick Aaron Hernandes on him if the owners don't have the balls to remove him?

Goodell is 1-25. Period. No player or coach has had as his singular mission to torpedo the Patriot's entire season.

Goodells actions are unprecedented in sports. When has a commissioner conducted a witch hunt vs a player/team, co-opted 99% of the sports media to convey his message, and slandered and libeled a hall of fame player?
Granted, we had a complicit owner, for the most part, but still the commissioner's (along with his minions) actions are without peer. He is villain #1, 2, 3 -25.....

mostly dominated by deflategate and spygate, for me:

Goodell
Kensil
Vincent
Grigson
Irsay
Pagano
Kravitz
Doyle
Mortensen
Curly Haired Boyfriend
Lester Munson
Felger
Brunell
Harbaugh
Shula
Suggs
Rex
Woody Johnson
Mangini
Tomase
Matt Walsh
Dungy
Sherman
Dreith
Tatum

Why would Bryan Cox be on the list?

Just an unlikeable dude earlier in his career. Talked a lot of trash on the field and with fans and was just a mean guy.

I wouldn't put Rex on this list. Definitely a rival and an entertaining one - and his team did beat us in 2010 - but nothing he said about the Patriots or Brady ever had any malice to it.

25 is way too long for my attention span.
I'd put it like this:

Collectively, the 32 Owners, including Kraft (Goodell, Kensil, Pash and Wells are just their tools...tools in every sense of that word).

Ben Dreith.

Jack Tatum

Bernard Pollard

Aaron Hernandez

The NFLPA for negotiating away the fundamental right of Labor to an independent arbitration process.

I could probably come up with a couple of others, but that'll have to do.

Guys that made plays on the field to beat the Pats (mannings, tyree, manningham)? Nah. They made plays, even if they were lucky.

Coaches like Rex Ryan? Nah. Colorful guy who's an idiot when he tries to motivate his team.

Idiot announcers and bad losers (like Lewis, Faulk, Suggs and others)? Nah. They're idiots and sore losers, not villains.

I wouldn't put Rex on this list. Definitely a rival and an entertaining one - and his team did beat us in 2010 - but nothing he said about the Patriots or Brady ever had any malice to it.
Agreed, I would add that Rex borders on worshipping Belichick. It's not really the behavior of a villain to be on your knees blowing your opponents head coach.

I agree that Kenesaw Mountain Goodell is a tool, but I do not believe his minions are simply "following orders." Goodell has actually been 100% consistent in his rulings and decisions during his entire tenure, after I disapproved of his appointment, with the media alternately attacking him over nonpunishment of near-murderers of women, and accepting as gospel and fact (or accusing him of UNDER-punishment) nonsubstantive convictions for rule breaking by the Patriots. The taping issue in '07 is equally untrue as the ball issue in '15; I do not in fact recall any violations by the Patriots in their history; the penalty imposed for Belichick coming here was basically over hurt feelings and pettiness (sound familiar?). As I've said countless times, the NFL's active and direct malevolence toward, and corrupt abuse of the Patriots is nothing new, and has occurred since the inception of the AFL. Since the merger, The Pats have been treated like a black sheep child. Like Kraft, Mr. Sullivan worked to get in with his fellow owners, but please let's not kid ourselves. Being mad will accomplish nothing; examining, understanding and accepting the facts is the first step toward a cessation of this basically criminal behavior by the league, against OUR team. I feel like I'm addressing the race issue in this country...see any similarities? It would help for Patriots Nation to unite, but I do not see that happening. Most of the old, silent, passive majority of fans accepted basically the end of what we rooted for in '93, and went on with our lives telling ourselves that nothing can be done. Like the recent blatant, incontrovertible shootings of nonthreatening black men, the NFL's witch hunt initiated by their treating seriously baby-loser blabbering by tantrum throwing opponents seems to be the clearest proof that something must be done; and encouragement to open OUR eyes and be the ones to do it. This is called taking responsibility. When Modell abruptly announced the move to Baltimore, the city of Cleveland, its political and governmental leaders and representatives AND FANS worked and fought to keep their legacy and team, and they succeeded, and although right now they're not doing well on and off the field, that can change faster than being knocked out of bounds by Mo Lewis. As with the stadium, Kraft is on his own in this thing, and the best fans can do now is to comfort and support him. This hurts him personally perhaps even more than Brady, knowing he may have unintentionally contributed to it.

Whoa, I'm floundering more than a dizzy bat shot game after that wall of text.

Just gonna echo some posters here, villain is way different from guy who made a play. Villain is an unethical souless sicopath who's actions were deliberately harmful. So without further ado my list

For educational purposes, we need to replay the whole game from December 18, 1976, so younger fans can appreciate why Ben Dreith belongs on a list like this. Rather than wallowing in misery, I find it empowering, like seeing Jesus bleeding from the cross. Furthermore, regardless of how nice he may have been, Orthwein's entire premise of the "need" for destroying our logo and uniforms was faulty, and actually malevolent in its ignorance:
"Well, it's 1979, and in the wake of the team finishing last for the second straight season, and Red very nearly leaving for the Knicks, and Marvin Barnes doing coke on the bench, the Boston Celtics' logo will now be a caricature of Bill the Butcher, and the team colors will be brown, more historically accurate..."
"Well, it's 1989, and in the wake of possible mishandling of the Chuck Stuart murders, now the Boston Police force will all be wearing yellow footie pajamas, as the latest marketing research shows this is the popular color and style of the time."
"Well, it's 1999 and Budweiser sales and promotions are low, so therefore the brand is clearly broken and ridiculed; so out go the Clydesdales and now the new Bud mascot is...an Aardvark taking a dump. Yup, no more holiday commercials with pretty music and horses pulling carriages in the snow; now ads feature "Do They Know It's Christmas" with video of the defecating Aardvark. Now, our marketing people spent days of research on this, and in fact the new mascot is appropriate, in that Aardvark feces, while mostly in Africa is more directly related to beer hops than some ponies. Marketing and sales have increased, and on top of that we've won FOUR Bud Bowls since, so clearly we've made the right decision. This Bud's for You!"
You know what's really "broken and ridiculed"? Ferguson, MO. So, let's apply Orthwein's marketing strategy there, and drop an A-bomb onto the white community there. Boston fans are A-OK with his destruction of the Patriots, so why not?
The Patriots for twenty three years now, have been primarily dressed like an unfortunate Pop Warner team, whose uniform order got somehow mixed up at the hardware store with a girls' flag stitching club.
I can only surmise that Kraft was, and remains, so grateful for the opportunity to own the team that he questions nothing of his peers. I hope and expect that recent developments have modified his perception, and thus his actions.

I'm thinking ESPN needs an dishonorable mention.
