NFLPA Responds to Brady's Denied Rehearing: 'We Have a Broken System'

Ian Logue

The NFL Player's Association released a statement following the news of Brady's request for a hearing being denied, and lashed out at the NFL for what they beleive are "clear violations of our collective bargaining agreement by the NFL and Commission

The whole sensible world says nothing happened - outside of cold, wet weather. Yet Brady is suspended for something he didn't do. You're darn right the system is broken!

You do have really wonder about Goodell's motivation here, nothing good for the league will come from one of it's biggest stars sitting a quarter of the season.

Hate to say it but this whole mess falls back on Big Daddy Kraft prematurely caving in during the owners meeting. Had Kraft played the hardest of hard ball and told Roger he'd fight this right to the end, there would have been at least a chance Goodell would have come to his senses. Kraft caved and Goodell was vindicated league and public wide, there's no other way to put it.

Goodell's motivation? Just a guess, but here is my theory.

  • The unholy triumvirate of Kensil, Grigson and Harbaugh hatched a scheme to frame the Patriots. Unfortunately for them they all flunked sixth-grade science, and none ever bother to check the air pressure in the tires of their cars. Goodell probably (though not necessarily) knew about the setup in advance.

  • Everything was going along fine until the real world effects of the Ideal Gas Law also applied to the footballs the Colts were using. A giddy Kensil leaked bogus numbers to Mort and King, unable to stop himself from continuing despite the red flag (Indy's numbers) that should have called for a decision to abort.

  • Coming off the heels of immense negative backlash due to the handling of the Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson cases, Goodell and his minions decide they can't just say 'we made a mistake' and drop the case with no penalty.

  • Influential owners such as Jerry Jones and Dan Snyder see an opportunity for revenge, when Kraft backed Goodell for the decision to penalize them for the oxymoron of salary cap penalties in an uncapped year (though it should also be noted that the same did not apply to the Jets that off season).

  • Goodell sees this as an opportunity to make people forget about Rice and Peterson. Nothing unifies people more than a common enemy or villain. The NFL does a masterful job of controlling the message through its media business partners while simultaneously placing a gag order on the Patriots. 345 Park Avenue has succeeded in making people forget about the botched Rice and Peterson cases.

  • Slowly but surely people figure out the science, and that the air pressure was right where it should be. Goodell switches gears to make this about power - power that was slipping away after Rice and Peterson.

  • This now becomes a preliminary battle over the next CBA. If the NFLPA wants this abuse of power to stop, then they will have to concede something. It could be a lower percentage of revenues for the players, it could be an agreement to add one or two games to the regular season, it could be an exclusion of something in the share of revenue. I guarantee though, that the surrender of this power - which will not cost the NFL a penny - will result in more money for all 32 owners. The talk about psi and integrity is nothing more than a distraction. This is all just a sleight of hand trick to net the owners more money down the road.

Yes, it will be a huge battle, but i suspect a longer lockout.. and perhaps. replacement players

The below photo was taken JUST LAST WEEK and as far as I am concerned it speaks VOLUMES. I know Bob has his supporters on this forum, but it is obvious that all the sabre rattling he has done in the process of "addressing" this farce the last couple years is empty rhetoric at best. As a long-time season ticket holder I find it maddening and truly embarrassing that the owner of this franchise has played us for chumps every step of the way.

You do have really wonder about Goodell's motivation here

There's no wondering about it. He was given permission from every owner INCLUDING dear old Bobby to hamstring the greatest NFL player in history so that "others" have a chance. Thats all it really comes down to; I am almost positive that BK along with the other owners decided long ago that the way to make the most money is to make sure every fan base "thinks" they have a chance to win it all. That way they'll go to all the games, buy merchandise, food, beer, etc etc.

But with Brady being so good, he was screwing up their plan to fleece more money out of the teams that aren't very good, so they needed to do something. And making Brady miss 1/4 of a season gives every team a chance to win it all.

I remember the first game back in 2008 when Brady was knocked out for the season, it was like the biggest shock ever in NFL history. All of the media outlets were like 'holy ****, every team in the AFC now has a chance to win!'. And even some players were saying the whole playing field had changed for every team since Brady was out for the season. I even recall a headline from back then saying something like "Never has an injury given so much hope to so many people".

Sorry didn't mean to go off on a tangent, I know this was supposed to be about Goodell. My bad.

waiting for kraft's comment???????????????????? dying to know what the jellyfish has to say about this.

hey bob, apologize to goodel.. you're his *****!

Makes me wonder if Maya was still here, would BK have screwed over Brady so badly. I'm guessing she would have told him to have some damn morals and have Brady's back. Then again Brady doesn't seem to have any issue with BK's dagger in his back, so what the hell do I know.
