So, what video is the author using to break down the routes and defensive coverage?

Is there All-22 footage of SB 36 out there, or something? Because I'm looking at the broadcast footage of the SB 36 drive on YouTube right now; as always, you really can't see much.

This was the play that I began to think " Wow, this could be it"

"I kind of like what they're doing now"

Play #5 - 3rd and 10 / -41 / LH / 0:29 4Q

See? It wasn't because of the Tuck Rule.

It's tempting to think of all that's happened since as pre-determined or magical, but the truth is even better. It was an extremely well-coached team who did their job better than the guy lined up across from them, and when their teammates needed them most, they responded spectacularly.

Thanks. Reliving one of the greatest endings to one of the greatest games.

That's a Joke, right?

You'd have to be a drooling Idiot to think that it was because of the Tuck Rule.

"The Patriots Dynasty was born because the Refs did their Jobs." OK.

Anyway: The Raiders owed us one.

Dude!! Just the fact you had to ask if I was joking is hurtful. Wow.

Yes the Refs did their jobs but the dynasty, imo, was already born whether they won that game or not. BB, Brady and the rest were going to win eventually.

I don't buy into the analogy that Tuck Rule game was the birth of a dynasty as it implies that without that game they would not have been. They would have been and have been for following years and still going.

I'm going to my room now to have a good cry.

What a hurtful and mean thing to say.

A thousand Apologies, Brother Tony!!

Goosebumps reading that.

With each paragraph I kept thinking of Maddens about face and comment what the patriots just did there gives me goosebumps.

Thanks for sharing. Such a great memory for me. Me and my father @fgssand where there for it.

I personally love the fact that the Raiders and their fans think they got screwed by the ref in the 2001 playoffs. It's especially enjoyable because it came 25 years after the Pats did get screwed by Ben Dreith, which likely cost the Pats their first SB win.

Free at last. Free at last. Thank Walt Coleman we're free at last!

Thanks PWP, that was a great analysis. gonna go back and watch now.

Ha, just watched again. So enjoyable with your contribution.

BTW, I love Madden's analysis here. He isn't a fan boy, or a soothsayer, he honestly felt that starting at the 17, [with a green QB] playing for overtime was the way to go. He indicated his ultimate respect for Brady and Weiss as they made the plays, and I loved it!

Toward the very end and after the game in Oakland was over on December 18, 1976, I felt hollow and empty inside. Years of work and hope were washed away that day, in an ocean of non-flags and then flags at the end of what will remain forever the single most lopsided stolen game by an officiating crew in the history of professional sports. It's sad that Kraft continues to go along with Orthwein's ignorant and insulting perpetration of the stupid, ugly flying elvis when he still could, today, give Brady the opportunity to play AND look like a champion as Montana did.

Yep!! I've always loved the Raiders, and my fellow Yankees can blast me all they want for that: OakLand seems to have a penchant for Maverick Teams, particularly the Raiders and the A's, and I love'm both!! America was founded by Mavericks, and Rebels like the A's & Raiders of the 70's manifested the rebellious Spirit that was forged right here in these streets of New EngLand by Yankee Patriot Rebels!!

That's why I'll never acknowledge those Chumps in New York as "Yankees".

Never have been.

Never will be.

They did not vote for Independence in 1776, by the way. True Story!!

And it's because they were scared ****less of the same Brits who we'd chased out'f Boston!!

Having said all that, **** the Raiders Fans who squealed about that!!

It was called correctly...unlike that alleged "Roughing The Passer" Sewage.

Squeal, ******. Squeal. :D

I don't hate on Madden that much. He had a point and was voicing what I'm sure many people were thinking. Of course he underestimated the most clutch QB in history and the best coaching staff in the league.

At the time I wanted them to go all out to try to win on that drive. Risky as it was, I also felt that we were in trouble if the Rams got the ball back again. After a stellar defensive game the Rams had finally hit their stride...just felt like it was our best chance and I was surprised as anybody how beautiful (and successful) that drive was.

Maybe if they were wearing the beautiful Flying Elvis that day things could have been different.

I enjoyed that. Thanks for sharing.

Always worth a few minutes reliving that game.

I could never understand playing for overtime there. In overtime only one of
Two things could happen. One, we lose the toss and kick the ball away or, two, they kick off to us and we have the ball deep in our territory, i.e., right where we were anyway. In either scenario we would have to execute well without a turnover...so why risk having to give up the ball due to a coin flip?

It's because on the surface the optics of a tough close loss in overtime looks better than giving the ball to an energized opponent one more time when you can end regulation time on your own terms. Of course, on closer examination this interpretation has it's flaws and is likely worse than just going for it.

Thanks .... Great post. I've always maintained the play by Redmond where he stretched for the first down and got out of bounds is the single most underrated play in Pats history.

My jewels tightened on that rollout play where Brady threw incomplete. For a few seconds I worried about outside the tackle box and a grounding call.

After JR's critical OOB play, Troy Brown went across the middle and downfield OOB. A series of clutch plays by several players.
