Innovator. Leader. Winner.

My condolences to the Ryan family.

Say what you want about Buddy Ryan but two things are irrefutable.

Defenders LOVED playing for him.

The 85 Bears defense was the most dominating D that ever set foot on the field. Haven't seen anything close to it since.

Buddy was nuts, in a good way. His kids are also unique characters on the landscape of professional football. They make the game fun to watch and fun to root for them to lose and throw their tantrums. Buddy will be missed.

My favorite Buddy Ryan team was the 1989 Philadelphia Eagles. Great defense. Reggie White, Clyde Simmons, Jerome Brown, Mike Golic, Seth Joyner, Eric Allen, Randall Cunningham, Keith Byars, Cris Carter, Keith Jackson, etc. Jeff Fisher was Buddy Ryan's Defensive Coordinator. Loved that team.

The Great Defender
Thanks to that mentality, Belichick’s greatness has never stemmed from the Big Idea, unless the Big Idea is the relentless application of many Little Ideas. For example: With the Giants, one of Belichick’s best tactics was something he called BTF, or Blitz the Formation, an idea he gleaned from Buddy Ryan’s famed 46 defense with the Chicago Bears. Instead of calling for specific players to blitz the quarterback.

Belichick would make a BTF call, and once the offense showed how it was lining up, his players would check to a specialty blitz designed for when that particular opponent used that particular formation. In recent years, however, Belichick has expanded on this idea by having his players adjust their blitz assignments not only based on the offense’s formation, but by having them trade assignments after the play begins.

Criticism dogging Belichick Kosar fans hound coach as Oilers top Browns, 27-20

CLEVELAND -- The reception Cleveland Browns fans gave head coach Bill Belichick was as cold as the winds that blew off Lake Erie into Cleveland Stadium yesterday.

"To quote Buddy Ryan, if you listen to the fans, you'll be sitting up there with them," said Belichick, who returned to Cleveland Stadium for the first time since cutting popular veteran quarterback Bernie Kosar on Nov. 8.

RIP to one of the greatest defensive minds the NFL ever knew

Condolences to the Ryan family Buddy was one of a kind.

He started the family tradition of Great DC's not as good HC's

There are only a few guys who revolutionize or otherwise change a sport in some way. Buddy was one of them. Heck, I still use the 46 from time-to-time in Madden. And I'm not really trying to be funny. I loved Ryan's defenses and I don't think either of his boys can hold a candle to him.

Buddy Ryan was 0-3 in the POs as HC of the Eagles; when one considers how much talent, on both sides
of the ball, those '88-'91 teams had, that is a remarkable accomplishment.
