The WAY too early guesses at surprise cuts in TC

I think a lot of that was the foot injuries, though. Look at a few of the routes from his rookie year for example. Not all of them are clean, of course, but he does display remarkable body control and suddenness for a 6'3 plyaer.

Not a lot of wasted movement, gets a clean release, threatens the outside shoulder to get vertical, and then stops pretty quickly to get 3 - 4 yards of separation on the comeback. It's hard to ask for a lot more separation than that in the NFL.

Or how about this double-move for a touchdown?

And the next route, another sideline comeback route, earns him 6 yards of separation at the 1:34 mark. That's pretty embarrassing for a DB.

My point is that we all know the negatives surrounding Dobson -- and I'm not going to pretend like he's the next big thing or even that he's likely to earn a roster spot -- but his route running doesn't seem to be the problem. Let's see how he does now that he's healthy again. Pre-season should be interesting to watch.

The only thing wrong with dobsons route running is that people who don't like him because of his injury affected production need a reason so that's the one they throw in there.

Why do we want to see Dobson fail?
I want to see him toss the cursed 17 jersey pick a new number and be our deandre hopkins player.

You would have to ask them. For some reason, this board has many members who root against certain players for reasons I do not understand.

And those posters are the least knowledgeable football fans anyway, so who even bothers to read what they post? And while that group of posters is basically irrelevant-i think the largest opinion on dobson here is that of course we want him to do well-are you kidding me? look at his skill set-pats dont have anyone else with that skill set BUT for evry flash hes shown-theres 5 alligator-arm weak attempts, 5 plays where he doesnt fight for the football. i can live with him missing time due to injuries-evry player gets injuries. im sure theyve had some effect on his game. i think a lot people dont want to get their hopes aup again just to see them not realized. that was never a problem for me since i never have unrealistic hopes for anybody-ive never had a "binky" and never will. when a player shows me what he can do, consisitently on the field in the regular season-then i become a believer. One thing different about dobson this year(besides being injury-free),is this the 1st time his job has really been put on the line. even reiss has his him being cut, despite fact hes looked sharp in otas.(for what thats worth which is not much). with jules, danny, hogan and mitchell as locks, dobson is fighting for the last spot. only way he doesnt get cut, imho, is throughout TC and especially preseason-hes got to show some toughness fighting for the damn football. dont care about his route running, really not an issue. but hes got to fight for the ball.or hes gone.

I think martin is his biggest competition, even tho their skill sets are different. martin more of a slot guy.

I think we go 6 wideouts
you could be right-even though thats unusual. the only problem with that-is there are other position groups loaded with talent/prospects too-like the safeties. its agood problem to have. deepest team in the nfl. some good players are going to get cut.

Dobson to the Rams for Tre Mason wouldn't be a bad deal for either side.

Lots of people expect Tre Mason to be released due to his off-the-field issues: missed a team bus by oversleeping, charged with possession of marijuana, reckless driving, failure to register a motor vehicle and resisting arrest. Plus he wasn't very good last year, after a very promising rookie year.

Talented, but some serious ISSUES for sure.

Do not want Mason Foster has a much better head on his shoulders and can have the same impact.

Foster won't have any impact if he breaks in preseason

Same is true for Mason. Or anybody. Any special reason to think it's more likely for Foster? Or are you just hoping to jinx him?

Because of the wear and tear and fact thatcher keeps breaking down.

You make it sound as if Dobson has been just fine, yet for injury. I don't think that's really been the case, has it? For one thing, he's bobbled and double caught passes since his very first game.

As far as his route running, you have definitely seen him round off some half-assed routes and fail to turn around for the back shoulder throw plenty of times. Maybe using the term "route running issues" isn't totally fair (shrugs), but he's certainly had problems with timing on those routes--so it's all connected anyway.

Those are two areas where Dobson's progression could go a long way towards allowing him to see more opportunities and production.

Either way, I think we'd both agree that Dobson is still worth keeping through the summer at a minimum, and that he has a lot of upside. The fact that he should have the playbook mastered by now, and has likely improved on his timing issues each and every year with more practice could end up paying off this time. Of course, it all starts with the injuries, as you've mentioned. He seems to be doing well so far, so fingers crossed.

Comebacks and hitches are some of the easier routes in the route tree to run. That stated, I never said he wasn't capable of doing it. What I've said was, to date, he just isn't consistently a crisp route runner. Dobson has a tendency of rounding off some of his routes which have put him in bad position mostly on slants and crossing routes. If he's learned to improve his route running, he should be right in the thick of it at camp.
Agreed - Im not so sure Dobson's problem has ever been his hands as he makes some excellent catches from time to time. He also has decent, but not great speed. Besides his injury problems, his main problem has always been an inability to get open/separation. In fact, a lot of his great catches happen when there's defenders all over him.

From all those dozens of reports out there that Dobdon "tore up minicamp", was there any evidence that his route running has improved?

I personally want to see dobson tear it up. I think Martin can produce, though, and lucien is my binkie. My fear is that dobson wins the roster spot, those 2 go to another team, and dobson ends up on IR again.

In that case, I'd much rather see dobson drown on his own in TC, than pull another good player under with him. Lucien should make it to the PS though.

Edit: thought you wrote martin, not carter. If Martin and dobson can both make it, and lucien can land on the ps, I'm just fine.

probably because of how often Foster gets hurt, Mason hasn't been in the league long enough
