Some argument from a year+ ago that i dont recall real well (was a multi-beer night). I forget who was for ronaldo; Ivan, nabwong, and somebody else all thought messi was goat-

my position was the both of them are good/great flavors of the month for a few years til they age and a new greatest comes along. But none enter into a GOAT discussion (like TB-PaymeaTon-Montana). Frankly, because it is such a team sport with ball contact so (relative to football) evenly distributed, i am not sure you could ever even have a goat in soccer. I compared ronaldo's stats to messi to show how could messi be GOAT if there is already a comparable contemporary. Someone i cant remember then said ronaldo>messi. I dont know enough about soccer to rate either of them, but the comparison for either (any soccer player) to TB GOAT imo pales.

You know, ive defended him his whole entire career. Im extremely proud of my heritage, and hes been such a symbol for Portuguese people around the world for a long time..

With that, ive seen him bury penalties for both Real Madrid/Man U his whole entire career, and when Portugal needed him the most he failed..

I wrote when this tournament started this isnt the Portugal team we've seen since the beginning of the decade. Its not Ronaldo+10. Ronaldo has a really good supporting cast around him, its now him thats not living up to expectations.

Fortunately theres still (atleast) one more game for him to redeem himself.

I still believe if he can catch fire, Portugal is a dangerous team that can go far, but until then, the way he conducts himself on the pitch, he deserves to be scrutinized.

Messi has won 5(?) world footballer awards and 4 consecutively? That's a very long flavor of the month. He scored 91 goals one year. And then the following year changed his game to assist more so that his team mates are more involved.

Messi looks like a malnourished hobbit and yet plays like a giant. He reminds me of that scene when Peter Parker realizes he has special powers and everything around him is just slower. When captain America got his powers. When ant man found the suit.

Messi is a special player. He plays to manifest the beauty of the game. Ronaldo plays for himself.

Spain's loss to Croatia just now has created a potential monster bracket for one half of the playoffs. If Italy finishes first in their group tomorrow you'd have Germany, Italy, Spain (who'll play each other in the best-16), France and England on the same side of the bracket. Potential quarterfinals matchups would be Germany against Italy / Spain and France against England.

EDIT: Just remembered, since Italy beat Belgium in their opening match they have clinched first-place in their group. So that monster bracket is locked and loaded.

Croatia could have a relatively good route to a Semifinal or final even. Likes of soccer-powerhouses Hungary, iceland, Wales, i think poland, could be standing in their way.

Anyway, croatia earned it today! Blocking that BOGUS 11m for a Spanish flop was huge

It could change in the knockouts in Euro but I'm shocked to say I have enjoyed the soccer in Copa America more than the Euros to this point.

I haven't watched any of the Copa America, but I haven't seen any many good games in the Euros yet. In fact, the first one (France v. Romania) was about the best.

They can end flipping any time they want, am it takes is replay both in game or as review afterward. A player who does so is suspended the next game, the next three, the next five etc etc depending upon frequency. In league play they lose enough money to deter it and in nationals play costing the team for big matches does it. It's a bullsh.t move and they need to end it. The biggest obstacle is FIFA corruption, which will hopefully be on the way out.

CR7 answered Messi's performance against USA with a stellar performance of his own scoring a brace and keeping his team in the tournament. Portugal tied 3-3 advanced to the knockout rounds
