Buffon amazing. Id put De Gea next level below them.

Seeing Kasey Keller on the half-time show reminded me of the great Brad Friedel and I found this excellent interview from a year ago. What a great guy! Here's his opinion on current goalkeepers:

The four keepers I’d put up in the world’s best category now would be Thibaut Courtois, Manuel Neuer, David De Gea and Hugo (Lloris). All are exceptional goalkeepers with incredible attributes. Courtois is probably the best on crosses I’ve seen in a long, long time. There are a lot of really good goalkeepers that don’t have Courtois’ confidence, assuredness, footwork and his outstanding leaping and catching ability on crosses. Neuer can control 35 yards out.

De Gea and Neuer are very good (saving) with their feet. Hugo and De Gea are very similar in their strengths in how quick they are. Hugo is outrageously quick on through-balls, very sharp off his line. He makes his mind up and he goes. De Gea’s reactions are very good as well.

My heritage: Irish, German, and Italian. That's two pretty good soccer nations and one that, well, could be a pain in the butt perhaps (Ireland). Good day for my Azzurri today.

You can't root for both Germany and Italy, that is sacrilege.

I'm sure the English football fans can get a song going about that.

Anyway to Ireland V Sweden. not great quality but incredible effort from the boys in green.
should have been 3 up by the time Sweden decided to play.

1-1 it is and onto Belgium, who will be reeling from the caning they got off the Italians.

a few buddies of mine were in Paris and said the atmosphere was electric. all fans got on famously.

onwards and upwards hopefully.

Yep. I had a bad feeling when Ireland missed those opportunities. I was happy to see them getting good opportunities but you have to finish those chances to pull off the upset. Great effort but they are still going to have to pull off a big upset to move on.

Beautiful goal by Halloran (sp)

First time in a tournament for my homeland Albania. I was at my sons soccer game and couldn't watch most of the game but did see the last 10 minutes. I can't believe he didn't equalize on a one on one with the GK.
So far the only goal scored by an Albanian in this tournament was for Germany. Which is OK because I've been a big Germany fan since I was 5.

Goalie has been the one position the US has been world class at for two decades. Keller, Friedel, and then Howard have kept them in games and tournaments for years and years. I don't have that feeling about Guzan and I'm looking forward to the next to flight goalie they develop.

I was young at the time but 1994 Tony Meola was pretty good too!

Friedel was great!

But if I were to choose one on his prime, id pick Kasey Keller.

Yeah, I was in the RiRa pub in Vegas in a sea of green Irish supporters and most figured they had to win to move on. I actually thought I was going to pay off on my bet to buy everyone in the pub a round if Ireland scored in the first half (drinking Red Breast before 9 in the morning never lead to anything good).

The Americans are great at having fun at sporting events, but no one beats the Irish for drinking AND having fun. (So ashamed of the English that I'm thinking of changing my username to Mike the Homeless.)

There's the rub, according to DNA, my Irish ancestors are mostly English and Scandinavian invader descendants so I think with the right conquering attitude (and not giving in until the whistle blows), they'd take you in as well.

Have to hope Belgium remains a disorganized mess. As for England, can their manager perform any worse?

Guys, your over praising these US keepers. Had the pleasure of both Keller and Friedal at Tottenham and can assure you, neither are World Class. Excellent.. yes. The current crop of Neuer, Lloris, Courtious, Cech, Buffon.. are ones you could call World Class. I couldn't wait to get rid of Kasey Keller, whilst Friedal.. was decent at Liverpool for a time. The best US keeper has been Howard though, done well in the Premier League but again not World Class.

Portugal about to play.

A game/group they should win, but history as shown these are the games Portugal usually loses.

This might be Ronaldo best chance. Since the beginning of the decade its been Ronaldo +10. This sqaud is different. The center backs are older, and we are shaky at GK, but the young quality Portugal has in MF is second to none.

Danilo is a monster DM for Porto, Joao Mario was the best player in the Portuguese league for Sporting. Not to mention William Carvalho on the bench, and the most exciting Portuguese prospect since Ronaldo, 18 year old Renato Sanches. He was a sensation for Benfica, and hes moving to Bayern Munich this up coming season.

Lets see what Portugal can do. Im excited!

Navas, Diego Alves, Perin, Handanovic > Lloris

lol I guess that means its good news for Tottenham fans then because Manchester Utd will not want to replace De Gea should he go to Madrid with Lloris anymore. Phew!

Lloris allowed less than a goal a game in the Premier League season just gone, the same rate as De Gea 35 in 38.

Saying that I do like Perin as an up and coming keeper, wanted Tottenham to sign him as backup last summer when all the stories of Lloris going to Utd to replace De Gea filled the transfer news every day.

Sorry, can't be having any Brazilian keepers in there.......

So, got in from work and somehow it's 1-1 between Portugal and Iceland?! I've got 4-0 in the prediction league at work!
