Marciano was the greatest ....and from NE to boot!!!

Being undefeated has to carry some weight. 49-0 with 43 KOs is damn good.

r.i.p.
impossible to forget the matches against Frazier and Foreman
i was his fan...

He would never have had to fight, simply go around and give exhibitions to support the war effort. He took a principled stand instead. Lots hated him for it, but he was honest and took his punishment for his beliefs when he could have easily got by with some token gesture.

Agreed, and to elaborate on this:

Unlike Bush, Clinton, and Trump, Ali refused to have strings pulled for him so that he could escape the draft. He didn't run away to Canada. His disavowal was at a time when support for the Vietnam war was at its highest. He just stood right there and took his punishment.

During his four years of court battles, he was given many chances to recant, to compromise. The Army didn't even want to send him to Vietnam; they would just give him a cushy gig, an entertainer's gig as long as he put on the uniform, but he still refused because he knew the power of that image. Even the Nation of Islam turned against him (!) and Jackie Robinson spoke out against him.

The actions he took, required a special kind of courage; the courage to be lonely but right.

I particularly appreciate people who demonstrate principle and courage that I probably wouldn't have under the same circumstances.

I know far more about boxing than than I do football, I consider myself an expert on boxing history.

I will sum up this for the forum

Muhammad Ali and Joe Louis were the two greatest heavyweights of all time. Take your pick as to whose better. Both were also American heroes and icons. They accomplished as much outside the ring as they did inside the ring, in different ways.

P4P Ali belongs in the top 10 all time discussion

Resume wise no heavyweight in history has a better resume than Ali. I have to laugh at the guy above who said bum of the month. Are you kidding me?

He defeated

Sonny Liston 2x- An all time great heavyweight champion near his prime, who was heavily favored against Ali
Floyd Patterson 2x- A former heavyweight champion still near his prime
Joe Frazier 2x - An all time great former heavyweight champion still near his prime. The thrilla in Manilla is an all time classic
George Foreman- An all time great heavyweight champion in his prime, undefeated. Considered invincible. People feared for Ali's health because they thought foreman might put him in the hospital. Maybe the greatest win in heavyweight history, and greatest game plan of all time
Ken Norton 2x- hall of fame heavyweight in his prime
Ron Lyle- Top Contender huge puncher
Ernie Terrell- WBA heavyweight champion
Earnie Shavers- top contender huge puncher
Jerry Quarry- top contender one of the best to never win a title
Jimmy Ellis- Former Heavyweight Champion of the world
Bob Foster- light heavyweight champion of the world
Archie Moore- light heavyweight champion of the world

No one can match that resume he cleaned out the 60s and 70s best, in what most experts consider the best era (70s) in heavyweight history

I'd put George Chuvalo ahead of quarry too. He had some losses, but had 72 wins and put a hurt on some in losses [Floyd Patterson, Ali] and he beat Jerry Quarry.

The description of Muhammed Ali as THE GREATEST takes into account his life as a whole, not simply his boxing record. Ali was transformative figure and remains one today, despite his passing. The fact that a Muslim American is loved by pretty much everyone except those wearing white hoods or running for president speaks to how great a person he was. Ali belongs in a category with Mandela and Ghandi not Mike Tyson.

Just got done finalizing my trip to Louisville to pay my respects to The Greatest on Friday. Spend Wednesday in Nashville then Thursday, Friday, in Louisville before doing it reverse on Saturday. I'm really grateful to have the opportunity to pay my respect to an incredible person.

JC, what a spectacular lineup...

I would fly in/out just to hear "Devil Went Down to Georgia"
And Luke Bryan sing "Suntan City", the all-time greatest anthem to drinking on the beach with hot chicks...goddam, I wish I could be there. On the beach and in Nashville simultaneously. Geographically impossible, but who gives a f###?:)

Yep. You could be sitting in traffic in the middle of January on the Mass Pike and ready to drink after listening to that song...
