RIP Muhammad Ali

Dance like a butterfly, sting like a bee. His jabs were legendary.

He was an icon, a very outspoken athlete who spoke his mind at a time when black men were not supposed to stir the pot. That, to me, is real bravery.

And as @Joker said, the thrilla in Manilla was the stuff of legend. 15 rounds of brutal clobbering in 120 degree heat, the final of the 3 matchups between two legends, Joe Frazier and Ali, that nearly left Joe blind and crippled and Ali, dead.

Ali would later say it was the closest he ever came to dying.

A personal story: my father bet everything he had on the Ali-Sonny Liston fight because he had seen Ali in the olympics and knew what he could do, before pretty much everyone else did and knew and predicted one of the biggest upsets in boxing history.

With the money that my father won, he bought a ranch spread in Colorado where he build his house and where I was then born.

So I am indebted to Ali for, in a manner of speaking, providing for my family....

Is your dad Ash Resnick or Barnett Magids?

:p

One of my favorite commercials from a long time ago...Ali and Brut after shave:

Float like a butterfly,
Sting like a bee,
The great smell of Brut
And the punch of Ali.

Ridiculously silly and mundane but it always made me smile because at essence it was representative of the joy he had for people and sport.

Ken Norton disagrees.:p

But yes, Ali could take a beating with the best of them.

That's just an expression, of course. He fought 2-11 rounds with a badly broken jaw, depending on whose estimate you believe.
Even the surgeon after wiring Ali’s jaw shut claimed it was in the very first round, “I personally don’t understand how he could have gone 11 rounds with that much pain,” said Dr. Gary Manchester. “It was a very bad break. The bone which was broken had three or four jagged edges. The edges kept poking into his cheek and into his mouth. He had so much pain during the fight that he's totally exhausted right now."

Ali was a badass on every level.

You put Ali in his prime with today's training techniques, nutrition and he is still kicking everyone's ass.

"I done wrestled with an alligator, I done tussled with a whale; handcuffed lightning, thrown thunder in jail; only last week, I murdered a rock, injured a stone, hospitalized a brick; I'm so mean I make medicine sick."

RIP, Great One.

RIP to the Champ

I have this in my collection ... need to go dig it up later and play it on my Seeburg.
I can still hear the words to it in my head ...
We would sing it when I was a kid and fake box and attempt to do the 'Ali Shuffle' ... like I said attempt.

"Black Superman"

In an era of limited media ... Cronkite and Cossell ... this man was larger than life to many kids of all races.
If there's an afterlife Cossell and Ali are catching up right about now ...

Yeah, in his younger days he got by on incredible physical ability, speed and reach. He was never the same after his layoff, but his guts and smarts then came to the fore.

He could have likely been undefeated had he not lost years in his prime, but shorter, inside chopping punchers like Frazier and Norton were the only ones who really gave him any trouble. Styles make fights.

RIP Ali. At the sake of not repeating what others have said I'll just say he even beat the real Rocky Balboa.

His best fights were later and with all the respect i have for Frazier and Norton, I don't think any human could have beat the pre-suspension Ali.

Remembering this from the 30 for 30 on Lyle Alzado.

Really don't know that much about him, he was before my time. Was he an actual good human being out of the ring too?

His philanthropy is off the charts great. Without looking I would guess that he has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for various charities. He was known to "give back" to his childhood community. Pay for nights in Hotels for the homeless etc..

He was also known as an ambassador for peace which led him to war torn countries. He once went to and successfully assisted in the negotiations for the release of American prisoners from Iraq.

He wasn't a celebrity looking for attention or publicity which was proven by the numerous acts he did that were often controversial.

On a side note: He was one of the few if not the only "draft avoiders" that my father, a 30 year vet, supported. He understood Ali's stance and respected that he didn't run "like a punk" to Canada rather he stayed and fought for his rights and his principles.
