Laughably Early 53 Man Roster Projection

Initially it sounds like a good idea, but I think you're underestimating Harmons role in this defense.

Harmon last year really showed what he can do and has become one of the best "center field safeties" in the NFL. IDK if he can play the roaming ball hawk FS but being able to do the other well is good in itself and good enough for most NFL teams in need of FS help.

I would hate to do anything to weaken the team and taking Harmon off would do that cause while i like Richards he is not the player Harmon is (at least yet).

If the Pats were to make any move at safety I would almost want them to trade McCourty for a top DE and sign Harmon long term. It be very risky but with Butler and Chung and Harmon's center field ability i think it be possible to do that. I would not do that either (unless the DE was really good but i doubt that haha) but I don't see enough gain for trading Harmon with what he means to this team unless you gain something this year.

I agree that we should extend Harmon.

Just my random thoughts on the 53 man roster.
1) Develin makes the roster because he brings toughness to the run game.
2) Cyrus Jones may be being used in a similar manner to Tyrann Mathieu. That probably means replacement for Harmon/McCourty in 2017.
3) Brown as this years version Dion Lewis ?

Brown, Bolden, White, Foster, and the Stanford back are all fighting for 2 spots in my mind.
Devlin is fighting with Harbor Derby for 2 Iosefa for 2 spots.
I think we carry either 4 tight ends or 3 tight ends and one Fullback.
I would think BB prefers to use the last slot for a player who can play tightend as well as fullback so I think Harbor with his experience and 3 year pact was brought in to be a third tightend slash fullback.
Making Devlin expendable if he doesnt have a lights out camp, preseason.

I'm not convinced that Develin's leg is 100% ready to go. That's one of the reasons why I left him off.

Yeah, it's way too early to try to do this, but I thought it would be fun to try to guess the roster now and see how far off I am by week 1. For now I'll stick with what we know as of today, being that Brady will be suspended for 4 weeks. That could definitely change between now and week 1 (hopefully!), but I'll operate under that assumption for now.

QB (2). Jimmy, Brissett
RB (4). Lewis, Bolden, Brown, Blount
TE. (4). Gronk, Bennett, Harbor, Michael Williams
WR. (5). Edelman, Mitchell, Martin, Hogan, Carter
OL. (9) Solder, Thuney, Andrews, Cooper, Vollmer, Mason, Waddle, Cannon, Stork
DT (4). Brown, Branch, Knighton, Valentine
DE. (5). Nink, Sheard, Flowers, Grisson, Rufus
LB. (5). Collins, Hightower, McClellin, KGH, E. Roberts
S. (4). Chung, DMC, Richards, King
CB. (5). Butler, Ryan, Cyrus, Coleman, J. Jones
CB/S. (2) Darryl Roberts, LeBlanc
ST. (4). Ghost, Allen, Cardonna, Slater

PUP: Tre Jackson, Amendola, White

Traded: Harmon.

PS: Karras, Chris Barker, Lucien, Derby, LeBlanc, Bentley, Woodrow, Carter, Bryce Williams, misc QB

After further consideration I would make a few changes.
-Swap Washington out for DeAndre Carter. Washington is getting up there in age and will make for a great mentor in the preseason, but might not have enough in the tank to be effective when it counts. If Amendola does in fact start on PUP, then an explosive slot option may be needed. Carter may be a sleeper.
-IR stash Foster if Lewis is indeed 100%. Foster looks like he has a bright future in this offense, but he needs time to bulk up. Use his roster spot to keep a 9th OL like Stork.
-Long could be a tough cut if he isn't impressive and if the young guys like Flowers, Grissom, and Rufus look strong. I like Long and hope he makes it, but if his mediocre play from the previous couple of years in STL continues in the preseason he could be cut in favor of a young, promising CB/S player with special teams upside in LeBlanc. With NE in a base Nickle, DB depth is critical.

I am on team Harmon. Contract may be up, but since he is affordable - keep him. He is solid enough to suitably hold down the fort if ever DM misses games.

I like Harmon too and, and agree that, so far, Richards hasn't really shown much. But Richards is more an "in the box" saftety a la Patrick Chung, while Harmon is more a center fielder.

Unless one or both of them are getting reps at other positions than those two mentioned, there isnt much overlap.

Agreed this is going to be a tough battle for Develin and some of it will come down to how well Harbor holds down the fullback position. Everyone loves Develin and McDaniels loves his fullbacks, but it's a numbers game here.
