Reiss: Malcolm Butler plans to push for an adjustment to his contract

If Butler holds out, then the 2016 season will NOT be an accrued season for him and he will not become an RFA after it.

You know better about this stuff than I. I thought players could hold out the first ten games and still accrue the season. I guess the rule is different for ERFAs and UDFA on rookie deals.

Very interesting indeed I dont see him becoming a distraction but I definitely seeing him get paid like a low tier number 1 cornerback.
The gamble is what will happen to that hunger and work ethic once he gets that guaranteed money.
Its tricky is their a way to pay Butler,Collins, High and Sheard.
Personally id be more inclined to let Butler Walk then then d line or backers.
Love the rooks potential and a big Roberts fan.
Very interesting.

I want to see another good season of him before investing bigger money. He was outstanding last year but lets see if that can continue first.

I think Butler's more than proven himself worthy of bigger money but right now it would have to be team friendly due to leverage.

TBH this is probably the best time to lock him up long term - the longer he plays at his current level, he more expensive he becomes.

Krafty Bob offered him a nickel raise....

An "adjustment" would mean a bump now, then contract negotiations later, no? Can't see a problem with that. He certainly outplayed his contract.

Not sure how it works, but they've adjusted contracts before.

I consider this a fair deal for both sides.

I love that deal but it's nowhere in the right zip code I'm afraid. 9th highest is way to low. He'll be looking for at least what Peterson got 2 years ago. I don't think he'll go Revis or Norman. Look at Peterson. Think that's his number IMO.

Then what? We let an iconic player who has not even entered his prime and shown every positive attribute we could hope for leave?
It's not like we have a track record of drafting great corners or have young guys already on the team or ready to step into his place.
Post-Revis, this defense could have unraveled last year. Malcolm may be one of the primary reasons it remained so tough and formidable.
I agree mostly with what you've said, but it still depends on what Butler is trying to get. There is still a salary cap that must be accounted for, and the Patriots do not have a history of destroying it for one player. I, like everyone on this board, want Butler on this team . . . but at what cost? Cy Jones could be insurance all along. The Patriots have always shown foresight.

He can't, he has absolutely zero leverage. He would be fortunate to have the Patriots offer 4/32/20 guaranteed, the Patriots control his rights until 2019 and there is nothing he can do about that.

In Butler's first year starting at CB, he managed to take the following WRs out of tbe game:

Odell Beckham Jr.
Allen Robinson
Sammy Watkins
Desean Jackson
Jarvis Landry

WRs that got the best of Butler:

Antonio Brown
Eric Decker
Emmanuel Sanders

Butler has the ability & athleticism to already shutdown the best young physical WRs in the game. Experience will come in shutting down the savvy veteran type WRs.

I think there is a decent chance Butler will regarded as the best CB in the league along with Sherman by season's end. I echo others thoughts that extending him now could save us a lot of money down the road.

Thinking of it. Butler may be best off trying to get a Seymour type of thing and try to get a few million bonus to placate him for the time being. He continues to progress and he might get close to Norman or Revis when he becomes a free agent. He'll take far less with a deal now (see Gronk and unlike Gronk, he won't get a top of the market deal at the time he signed).

OT Question: Can the league's salary cap decrease below the current level?

Currently the 2016 League Salary Cap is $155,270,000. If the league's revenue plateaued or decreased would the subsequent year cap decrease?

In case you do not believe my Cap number I've provided the link. :p

Edit: I looked for the answer in your FAQ's but the link provided no longer is active.

And reduce the possible 15 million (if tagged) cap hit in the third year.

Sign the beast

6/36 is a win win, team friendly, provides security.

He is a cornerstone piece of this D

Good. He has outplayed his contract by a huge margin. He makes an obscenely low amount vs his worth to the team. Time to pay up Mr Kraft.

Then he is traded as the team feels he isn't worth top corner money.

Maybe they do? Don't know...

I would put Malcolm ahead of Collins and Hightower. Mainly because I think if we only come away with 2/3 then getting one CB and one of the LBs leaves us in a better place.

And I don't think I'ld put Sheard ahead of any of the 3 because of snap counts which should go up for him this year and we'll see how his production correlates.

Malcolm is not more valuable than High and Collins. Period.
