What are your religious beliefs?

I'm a straightforward atheist.

No, I'm not certain of that in the way I am certain of the conclusions a mathematical proof, but I'm not certain in that way of anything else either, for example of the accuracy of any particular physical law, or indeed of the existence of the physical world altogether.

It's just that when consider any concrete religious belief I'm aware of other people holding, I find the evidence against it to be overwhelming. I guess it would be possible to construct a belief so vague and general that one can't disprove it, but then it would also be one that has no consequences in the real world whatsoever.

It's time to get something going in here. I was born, and partly raised a Catholic. I went to Mass until I was 10. Then, in my teenage years, I flirted with Evangelical Christianity. That was before my Heavy Metal phase- I've yet to grow out of that.

Currently, I'm an agnostic. Something or someone created the universe and I don't know what it was. As such, I just can't be an atheist.

So, what's the story for everyone else?

Your story speaks to me as well.. I know someone or something created the universe that is worthy all the praises.. We might not know the real answer in this lifetime..

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything. For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven.

- Colossian 1:15-20

Raised Protestant, sub set Congregational. Switched to Unitarianism in my teens. Became a non believer in my twenties. Started studying Buddhism in my 40s. Found a Tibetan teacher ten years or so later and practiced under his guidance for 3 years. Have stayed a Buddhist but don't meditate as much as I used to. Buddhism is a lot of hard work and I need to reinvigorate my practice.

I really don't care how this is all started. What i do know is that the religion that we have right now has been proven incorrect.

Surprised to see this on a pats board, but hey, I'm up for it. I grew up Evangelical Christian, spent a few years as an agnostic and then a non-religious theist, finally came back to Christian faith and entered into full communion with a Byzantine Catholic church in my mid 30s (curious to see if many here know what "Byzantine Catholic means"---but it's Melkite Greek Catholic whose American bishop is in Newton, MA). I have always loved heavy metal, though I do try to stay away from the overtly Satanic stuff (PS I don'tconsider Black Sabbath satanic, lol). Actually, it sounds like you a theist more than an agnostic, though you might not be a religiously inclined theist. I was at that point for several years. Good thread.

I am extremely familiar with the Melkite church. One of the 24 autonomous churches of the Catholic church. I love the churches of the Byzantine Rite. The liturgies are so beautiful.

Hi--can you elaborate on "has been proven incorrect?" Do you mean Christianity specifically, or any and all religions, etc.?

Perhaps our friend means that no moral religion would be as homophobic and misogynous as the mainstream religions, mostly Christianity and Islam, ifr they were decent and moral religions.

That is what I see and that Is why I am a Gnostic Christian. We, as Universalists, cannot be homophobic or misogynous.

We also reject the notions of human sacrifice and the punishment of the innocent instead of the guilty that Christians have to buy into to be Christians. To use Jesus as our scapegoat, we find repugnant.

Having another innocent person suffer for the wrongs you have done, --- so that you might escape responsibility for having done them, --- is immoral.

Do you agree?

Raised Protestant (Congregational)... became agnostic as a teen and Buddhist in my 20's... came back to JC thanks to Mrs. Rover. ;) (she grew up Catholic and went evangelical non-denom as a teen)

We attended Episcopal, Catholic, Baptist, and Lutheran churches until I could no longer escape the truth of John, chapter 6, and converted to Catholicism. Mrs. Rover reverted as well. And we are blessed to live a block and a half away from our parish here on Long Guyland. Leave for church at 8:54... arrive at 8:56. LOL... plus it's a very short walk of shame Saturday afternoon to the confessional. o_O

Born and raise roman catholic but now atheist but i don't make a big thing about it or get in debates with people but if they have questions I don't mind answering.

I do pray to Joe Pesci though.

Same here, though I do enjoy debating the subject. Most of the time it is the same tired arguments, but every now and again the conversation can be very edifying.

Joe bless George. :)
