DeMaurice Smith on Brady/NFL Settlement Talks

OK, I think this is the crux of the matter. Their "generous offer" to have him pin the blame on the little guy DID require an admission of guilt.

For Brady to point his finger at the equipment guys would be to say "yes this trumped-up conspiracy really happened, yes there was a scheme to deflate footballs, yes it helped us win, yes the Patriots are a cheating organization that doesn't earn its success."

They didn't just want him to throw two men under the bus, they wanted him to throw the PATRIOTS under the bus. Which is no offer at all.

I think it's easy to see a scenario where Brady could say "because they got tired of me always yelling at them about ball inflation levels McNally and Jastremski took it upon themselves to deflate balls past the league required levels. They did this without any direction from myself or the Patriots."

I mean, easy to see if you leave out the fact that Tom seems to be a decent human being unwilling to have others take the fall for a non-event that idiots blew into a huge scandal just to save his own skin.

As I recall, there were reports/rumors/whatever last summer of the settlement that Curran reported: Brady offered to take one game for not fully cooperating with the investigation in return for no admission of guilt by himself or anyone in the Pats organization.

I know that doesn't/didn't sit well with many on this Board, but it was, as someone else said, a "generous" offer, given his innocence.

Clearly, the Owners wanted blood, in the form of an admission of guilt by someone in the Patriots organization. Now, it's gone from that to a test of wills over the CBA.

Sickening.

Yep- I remember that as well and seems to jive w/ what folks believe Dee Smith is alluding to.

I would have to imagine that there is a publishing company willing to spend big bucks on the inside information of the last 12 years in the league offices. There has to be a myriad of stories involving stupidity, ignorance, malevolence, prejudice and corruption that would make the court of the Borgias seem like playschool. It's a pity David Halberstam is no longer with us, as he would have been my first choice to write it.

The book or books will be written, unfortunately not in the current career lifetime of Bill and Tom, but the tainted legacy of the commissioner and his cohorts will be then engraved in stone, for their children and their children's children to carry the shame.

I'm glad that Brady made that generous offer and I'm glad Goodell's blind arrogance refused it. At every turn through this entire ordeal Brady has increasingly looked like the better man while Goodell has increasingly looked like the maniacal power abusive idiot.

I am loving Olsen's (or whoever's) newly invigorated PR campaign.

This thing is going to see an en banc hearing.

On the subject of Brady being the better man through all this, think back to what he said after Berman overturned the suspension last August: Brady apologized to anyone upset by the situation.

Compare that to Goodell's victory tour in the media after winning the appeal. He showed zero magnanimity and seems to be unaware that this affair is a negative for the game. Goodell also never had to face a hostile press conference like Brady did when he was preparing for the SB.

Oh but Stephen A Smith thinks Tom is being selfish....

I bet his buddy Troy Vincent told him to say that.

I just heard a clip of him spewing his BS. What an idiot DB.

How many of us would pay big money to see a real congressional investigation into the NFL and all its shenanigans and lies and coverups and such? At this point, with their anti-trust exemption, I'd think that it really could - and should - be done. There's just so much material to work with.

Came home about 20 minutes ago and my roommate had ESPN on and they were talking about the concussion scandal. Stephen Asshat of all people went on a rant about how the NFL can't be trusted and if they were to lie about something this serious why wouldn't they lie in something like Deflategate. I was really surprised to hear it but the tide has definitely started to turn over the past couple months
Well, Screamin' A came back to form today. It was a short trip to sanity for him.

Its awful. Saying Brady is selfish is unbelievable to me. Might be one of the worst things he has said.

He went on to say that Brady is selfish because he (Smith) is sick and tired of this story. Um....Brady is selfish for defending himself and - in this case, now - the NFL players from a tyrannical commissioner, because Smith is tired of the story?

Hahahahahahahahaha

Yep. His logic is ridiculous. Why isn't Goodell selfish? Why can't he stop?

I swear 345 Park Ave. put him up to saying this. Smith is a loudmouth idiot but I think he has a couple of rational noodles floating around in his head and not just beef jerky.

Well he is an act, don't take what he says too seriously. First take isn't 100% real.

Just really this needs to go. As wished it was solved last year. NFL has better things to do.
