Reiss approaching the point of no return?

He chose "money over principle and honor"? Seriously? Thats a bunch of self-righteous bs. He joined espn long before defamegate. Thats what i disagree about.
as for the 2nd part, sorry, i lumped you in with everyone else whos always whining about "staying pure" and "not clicking on espn or ill be tainted". Look, i hate how theyve handled the whole mort thing as bad as anyone, but im not going to stop reading reiss, or watching nba playoff games. Everybodys entitled to do their own thing.
ESPN sucked long before either gate struck us. Just we all love sports so much we lived with it and most still do even after all the BS so close to home.

I understand your point. My point was about how Mike makes a living.

Clearly if Mike is making up stories or falsifying sources he should be fired.
OK I see what your saying now. And obviously you read what I said earlier with Reiss it's not the man just that I can't be sure it's actually him.

Some say it was inevitable.
The taint, the stench that is ESPN…..
The duplicitous, agenda driven journalistic practices of the self proclaimed worldwide leader….
The subservience to their NFL grandmaster…..
……..so many despicable forces pulling once "bastions of integrity" down into the bowels, into the darkness…where only media dregs gather, uniting …..and now Reiss….. slowly descending?

Reiss' latest blog starts off like all Reiss' works ……The latest developments in the Brady appeal saga accompanied by some choice quotes from Brady's newest attorney, Ted Olson, and from the NFLPA's Smith….solid work by Mike……..

….but then …… a typical ESPN maneuver is deployed. An unrelated and unnecessary tidbit of information is inserted into the article designed cast suspicions regarding New England's integrity ….out of nowhere

"Brady signed a two-year contract extension during the offseason that dropped his 2016 salary from $9 million to $1 million. That could save Brady almost $2 million in lost salary during a four game suspension""

Brady fights back, seeks new suspension appeal

Some may say I'm overly sensitive. Others might add that my hatred for ESPNFL is clouding any sound judgement that might still exist inside me. Maybe Reiss is just remarkably thorough……….MAYBE….but lets not forget Reiss is part of the enemy faction and I choose to see the worst in my enemies. Sorry Mike. I understand this ethically challenged underworld is a powerful force but never forget to look upward toward the bright light that is integrity which rarely shines over Bristol. Give us a sign and we may be able to extract you from the morally bankrupt, get you to CBS or Fox safety. Save yourself before you succumb to the taint.
Uh, you ARE overly sensitive. Everyone knows about this, it's been widely reported. Reiss wouldn't be doing his job if he didn't mention it. Not to mention that it's ****ing TRUE.

So you're saying he's a lying piece of pond scum, just a level of two above "attorney"?

You guys get back to me when you decide not to willfully misinterpret what I've written. I'm not bagging on Reiss. I'm just saying that the man went to ESPN in 2009, and this is now 2016. Reiss *****ed when they first messed with his stuff, yet he's still working there all this time later. It's long past time for "Poor Mike deserves better than ESPN".

You're welcome to try a "Psychologically battered ESPN employee" defense, if you wish, though I won't be signing on to that one, either.

Bwaaahaaaahaaaa consider me a psychologically battered ESPN consumer.

Mike Reiss has a daughter with heart issues. At the time he joined ESPN, the Boston Globe had just had major layoffs and benefit cutbacks, and had looked to be circling the drain. His daughter needed surgery.
Important Causes

Is this money over principles? Maybe, but I view it as choosing his daughter above all others. Crappy situation to be placed in, but completely understandable from my perspective.

Thanks for posting this.
We are all hypocrites to some degree. As a general rule, the people who protest the most about others' hypocrisy have done the least to acknowledge and reflect on their own.
When a profession is under extreme economic stress, the people involved have much more stark choices to make regarding priorities.
I doubt that Reiss had to think for very long about signing up with a healthier enterprise (ESPN vs. Globe) when looking his child and wife in the eyes. It may not have been easy for him, but that's to his credit.

I don't think he gets the scoops other writers do. I don't think he did that at the Globe.

And to me, this is the bigger point. Reiss is a fine reporter. He sorts the important facts from the drivel and drama, and provides it to us in an orderly, consistent fashion.

He's not a strong investigative journalist, as evidenced by the lack of scoops. Nor is he a sportswriter; he doesn't give us many in depth stories with writing that you can't put down.

The shame of the situation is that the state of Boston sports investigative journalism and writing is so awful that Reiss is a hero just because he doesn't become a loud mouthed entertainer and write rumor as fact in order to get clicks. That's tragic.

Couldnt agree more. You hit the nail on the head. Especially for those of us who no longer live in New England, the options for following Boston sports has been more limited. I thought espn, along with every other major sports outlet, turned into tmz years ago. So i pick and choose what i watch or click on. Hell, when i moved from Boston to NC in '91-the Globe sports section was BY FAR the best in the entire usa. Sometimes 15+ pages. With excellent writers. Then they went down the toilet along with everyone else.

With the profession of journalism facing ever shrinking ranks, it's much more difficult to maintain a family income than those of us with more generic jobs, accounting, sales, engineering, etc. where there are many potential employers if we find ourselves in a moral or other quandary.

I agree with you about the "poor mike deserves better than espn". I always chuckle a bit when people post stuff like that. Its the real world and we all have to make decisions. But for you to impugn his honor and principles because he stills works there is just plain wrong imo. First, hes always reported professionally, even gets his subtle jabs in against espn when he can. I know hes held in high regard by BB, along with curran. Those 2 guys have been on the beat the longest and have built trust that other "reporters dont have-mostly because they both dont try to "break" stories-they try to get them 100% RIGHT. So BB knows he can trust them. I guarantee reiss and curran couldve had more "scoops" than anyone-but they sit on alot of stuff until they can check and recheck its veracity. You also dont know his situation. The ultimate in honor imo is to ALWAYS put your family first. And cmon, be real man, its not like espn ISIS or the nazis. Theyre no worse than any other media outlet. Along with their crap they also produce some really good ****. There are excellent people like Louis Riddick , Shefter, Bruschi and Reiss who counter the bogus crap. OTL can be agenda-driven but its also sometimes really good. Since espn has the biggest national audience-we NEED people like Reiss, Bruschi, Riddick and Shefter-who are obviously big admirers of BB and the way the Pats do business. All the yahoo haters out there need to hear these guys debunk the crap other clowns on espn have espoused. Those yahoos would never hear it if they werent working for espn.

As Reiss told me at a booksigning: "Where else is there?"

This isn't exactly a growth industry. And if his kid still has medical issues (kid certainly did in the past) it would be crazy to bail on a full-time job...for what? Writing for Bleacher Report or some other place even worse than ESPN?

He's reasonably accomplished. His resume and talent would get him a job elsewhere.

I think his daughter is 100% ok with a clean bill of health.

If I recall she had a heart-related birth defect that they detected early and surgically repaired.

"Brady signed a two-year contract extension during the offseason that dropped his 2016 salary from $9 million to $1 million. That could save Brady almost $2 million in lost salary during a four game suspension

Why does that question NE's integrity? Just smart planning by the team and Brady to make sure he is not hurt too badly if the suspension is upheld. Helps Brady and helps with the salary cap.

The article doesn't question anybody's integrity.

The article doesn't question anybody's integrity.

But the whole thesis of the OP and the thread is that it does:

I don't take ESPN seriously ...

They are entertainment driven ... it is what it is.

Don't like it then don't click it - read it - or watch it ... it's not hard.

what I do notice is that many who complain are the type who need to know every little bit of news and opinion. This type of sports fan has made ESPN what they are ... digest that for a moment or two. For all those who stop clicking and watching many more will take your place. Like I said I don't take them seriously and I really could care less what they have to say - it's entertainment ... not non-fiction material. I stopped reading Reiss a long time ago - he sold his soul and whatever - everyone has to eat and pay bills i don not blame him one bit.

deflategate has increased the percentage of Patriot's fans who are whiny ass *****es - grow up.

what little factual press that remained has gone to pasture ... it's not coming back.

You continue to willfully misunderstand what I've written, so there's no use continuing this.

Ultimately, when Brady is vindicated, every single sports media person in Boston is going to have to find a new life somewhere

Not all......Holley / Thornton / Curran / Arnold.......all shine through to me.

Felger & Maz will somehow spin it so that their ratings increase and give one thought about how they added to the shaming of Tom Brady. They just keep on insulting fans (or am I "fanboy"), players that care (what right do they have questioning the motives of Amendola's renegotiation).
