Classy move for a classy guy! You deserve it Jerod, and you will be missed!

For like one season right? I mean, the Pats have enough retired numbers as it is.

Yeah just the one season. Mayo was not good enough to retire his number but unlike other players who had to be cut or let go here he did everything the Patriots wanted him to while healthy and was a great ambassador for the team. Another Pats numbers I would not like to see replaced for at least a year are Ninkovich - 50 cause he has such a long history here and deserves a year buffer. Of course it goes without saying retire #12.

Teams go overboard with retiring jerseys.

I like a one year gesture out of respect for Mayo.

With that being said, I really think The Patriots should (continue to) treat jersey numbers like a symbol of honor. Much like Revis getting Ty Law's #24. Vrabel and then Nink as #50. Or how we treat #55 with Willie and then Seau. Too many good players to retire the all those jersey numbers; but they can still have a legacy associated with the number which gets passed down to the next class of players who have high expectations.

The only number that can be fully retired in the future is #12. That's simply to much of a legacy to pass down to another.

So...is it safe to say that the Pats are......
Holding the Mayo???!!

But seriously, this is great. A great honor for a fantastic football player on and off the field. I'm sure one of these days the young kids on the team now will be calling on him for advice/suggestions just like the previous two years. And, as always, he'll be there, because he's that kind of dude. I'm glad the Pats recognized that quality.

One of the great class acts to pass through Foxboro. Captain very early on. Went out with utter class. Even managed to bring in a bit of humor w/o comprising the classy dignity in any way, which is hard.
