Grissom and Flowers

What are the expectations this year for these two? I remember Flowers did well in the preseason last year before getting IR'ed.

I'm just really curious to see how much these two are in BB's future plans. You could even throw Rufus Johnson into this conversation as well.

I think both are not going to do too much this year unless they force BB's hand. Sheard/Long/Nink will see almost all the meaningful snaps. I do think the one we will see the most is Grissom as he played some pass rushing DT for the Pats when Easley went down. He is one of the only players with experience doing that.

Flowers has a longer road to go as he is a pure DE and not as flexible so he has to prove he is worth putting in and that we will not lose much doing so. I do expect to see more of both this year though.

I'm pretty optimistic about these guys. My gut tells me BB is too.

I think one of the 3 will give the team 80% of what Chandler Jones did.

Grissom most likely saw playing time because he was available. I think Flowers will ultimately prove to be the better player, barring injury. Will definitely be interesting to watch in camp this year.

Are you kidding? Both are expected to seriously compete. I don't think anyone is a lock, though Sheard & Nink have jobs to lose.

Flowers yes, grissom will not be good, but BB sees something in him so he ll be like tavon or Jake bequete..3 years on roster.

I think Flowers was drafted to eventually replace Nink. They may start working him into the rotation this year. 2017 might be when he really gets his opportunity. Long is a 1-year player here, most likely. I like Flowers long term potential, but I think they will bring him along slowly.
Grissom might see more defensive snaps than Flowers, but they may come as an undersized DT role on passing downs. I'm curious to see how big he looks. I could see Belichick developing him into the type of interior pass rusher that Easley was supposed to be.

I think I disagree. I think both will see significant time this season, especially considering what we lost up the gut of the D and the fact that Sheard is in a contract year and we all know by now not to presume anyone is a lock to be with this team from season to season. The young bucks will have to play to prove their worth in case we lose a combination of Sheard and Ninko. And then there's always injury. Sad fact of the NFL game.

Why is Grissom not good?

ABSENT INJURIES
Flowers will get few reps. Ninkovich and Sheard are the starters, and Long is the #3. Grissom may get reps, as he did last year, playing inside on passing downs.

WITH INJURIES
next man up, as always

Flowers looked like one of the best players on the field last preseason. I was never impressed with Grissom, and I have him off the 53 right now.

You're going to cut a top 100 draft pick just a year later? Especially one who has some versatility with both DT and TE work? I'd be very surprised.

I'd just rather have Rufus Johnson at this point.

I think Johnson is much more of a DE/OLB than Grissom's DT/DE designation, so while you may be right that Johnson proves to be a better talent, it may be difficult to do a straight up comparison.

Either way, it's good to see the depth and competition in a decent spot, but yeah--I'd be surprised if they give up on Grissom already.

It never fails to surprise me how quickly posters on here are willing to write players off and cut them. They're one year out of college and because they're not sack machines already they're JAGs? Learned nothing from the cut Edelman/McCourty/Chung etc episodes?

Yeah, I think the answer is "we just don't know what the ceiling is on these guys". Either one might beat Long outright in training camp, and cost him his job. Either one might get dropped to the waiver wire.

For the camp of fans who never imagine that a player can be great until after he's great (e.g. the people who said Edelman couldnt fill for Welker, or that Collins was a bust after a quiet rookie year, or that Logan Ryan couldn't start on the outside in the NFL until after he did for a whole season), there's no chance that either one could ever fill Jones's shoes. But even Jones couldn't have filled Jones's shoes after his rookie year.

I'm of the camp that this coaching staff can coach just about any NFL caliber players up to an elite level... including guys who should only ever be bench-warmers. Three words to that effect: Tully Banta Cain.

We'll just have to see. I do think all of them, Rufus too, probably has more to offer than we've seen on game day.

That's you opinion and you're entitled to it.

Yup. Dobson is still on this team. Think about that.

No one knows about Grissom. He's a developmental guy. He was constantly moved around in Oklahoma.

Strictly build wise, Grissom and Johnson have the perfect build to play OLB in a 3-4. Whether they have the talent remains to be seen.

I envision BB and Patricia rotating the edge guys much like they do the interior players. I don't see one of these guys duplicating Chandler production, but a combination of 2 out of the 3 coming close.

Exactly.

Grissom coming in is very similar to guys like Collins and Edelman.

It took awhile for Edelman to carve a niche on this team and look at how important he is today. Collins was an edge player in college. We move him to an off the line LB position, and today he's one of the elite LB's in football.

Not saying Grissom will be as good as those two, but give him some time before you say he sucks or not.
