Don't Go to Sleep This Spring on Patriots CB Darryl Roberts

Yes, Roberts may very well be the first player since Watson to sit out his rookie year on IR (or almost all of it) and be a contributor in his 2nd year, or not.

Or not? What leads you to believe "or not"? Did you SEE him perform in preseason before his wrist injury? I did. He was starting over Logan Ryan and performing very well. Just look at the stats for the Aug 13th game he was injured in. Plus there's the measurables..

Patriots placed CB Darryl Roberts (wrist) on injured reserve, ending his season.
Roberts earned first-team reps at OTAs, but got hurt about midway through training camp and will presumably require surgery. A 4.36 speedster at 6-foot, 190, Roberts was a seventh-round selection in this past May's draft. Tue, Sep 1, 2015 06:12:00 PM

6 feet tall, 4.36 speed, showed up well enough to start in preseason before injury..."or not"?????????????

Honestly, Roberts excited the hell out of me over last season's preseason. I had such high hopes for him. Hopefully he's spent as much time as he could in the film room and playbook because if he hits it, the DBs suddenly become a greater strength of the team.

Roberts was one of my binkies last year. I had him on my list for the draft competition (hit on him and Mason). I would love to see him seize a starting role opposite of Butler, but let's temper the enthusiasm a bit. He missed a lot of crucial development in his rookie season, and who knows how well he devoted himself to the classroom and rehab. Probably a realistic scenario is that he makes the squad (not guaranteed with four new rookies and a free agency signing at his position), and eventually competes with Coleman for 3rd corner duties.

Still. It would rock if he emerged as a starter. :D

The way our binkies go around here I hate to say it watch him get cut before TC then breakout with another team hope I am wrong.

Who was the last "binky" of PatsFans.com that happened to?

He is incredibly gifted athletically. I find it interesting that he out-bench-pressed this year's draftee from Neb despite being out-weighed by over a hundred pounds.

Vincent Valentine was only able to do 18 at the Combine to Roberts's 23 at his Marshall pro day.

I'm just gonna post this scouting report from profootballspot.com as a refresher for some folks. Given that they talk about his long arms, it's REALLY impressive that he was able to put up 23 reps on the bench. Also, some of the negatives they mention are traits that actually have me pretty excited. Here's to hoping he can stay healthy and seize a role for himself.

NFL Pro Day Results

40-yard Dash: 4.38

225-LB Bench Reps: 23

Vertical Jump: 39”

Broad Jump: 11’01”

20-yard Shuttle: 4.06

3-Cone Drill: 6.66

Strengths

- Ideal size, length and speed necessary for a starting corner

- Very strong despite lanky frame; has some bulk to him

- Quick recovery speed to go along with fast-twitch reaction

- Squares up when going for a tackle; isn’t afraid to jump up in run support

- Long arms allows him to get hands on receivers off the line

- Aggressive, quick jab in press coverage

- Changes directions quickly with little wasted movement

- Very fluid across the board

- Looks to make plays outside of his assignment without being overaggressive

- Ball skills allows him to challenge any ball in the air

- Special teamer who contains well; rarely gets out of his lane

- 2014 Conference USA First-Team Corner

Weaknesses

- Tends to be overaggressive down the field

- Called for three pass interference penalties in 2014 on plays he lost ground on

- Seems to get lackadaisical with lesser receivers; mental lapses occur, which can lead to big plays

- Appears rigid in his backpedal; has to bend more to maximize body control and quickness out of breaks

- Short throws in front of him can be had; seems comfortable giving up quick hitters

- Running backs can blow by him on routes out of the backfield; doesn’t appear ready at times

- Freelances at times in his coverage, which leads to penalties/big plays

- Doesn’t wrap up well when coming in for a tackle; wants to lay the boom every time without the proper form

- Does a lot of jawing at the opposition; seems more focused on talking smack than making plays at times

He didnt play long enough to get excited about anything. All I truly remember was Jordy Nelson easily boxing him out but Nelson is a beast.

It irks me when some of the strengths and weaknesses in these articles directly contradict each other. Does he square up for his tackles or is he always trying to lay the boom? Is he overaggressive or isn't he?

I wish they weren't so quick to IR him. He was looking very promising.

I don't know anything, but I'd think a wrist injury would be something they could stick a cast on and keep playing. Maybe since depth was viewed as good, IR was the best way for him to make the roster in 2015.

Dunno.

If I remember that play correctly, Jordy boxed him out, but the coverage was tight and the throw by Rodgers was perfect to the outside. Sometimes you have to give the offense credit.

That still bothers me.

In the end Ryan had a solid year so it didn't kill them.

I'll just say that if Ryan somehow goes back to poo poo '14 Ryan next year, I think Roberts could come in and surprise as the #2 outside corner.

Knowing Malcom Butler will be seeing a Brinks Truck backed up on in lawn in the not too distant future If Roberson is the real deal the transition should be easy. I want to retain Hightower and Collins at all cost yes I prefer those two over Butler God bless him.

I wasn't planning to go to sleep on this particular man, but thank you for the advice.
