He is, as I've stated numerous times, dubious about them signing High, Collins and Butler. He also said from what he's heard there won't be a hometown discount from anyone outside of a million here or there. Also, he doesn't feel the team will even come close to wanting to nor will match the top dollar crazy money they will be offered. He said he's been feeling he's been wrong all along.

He know something for sure otherwise he wouldn't be saying that.

I don't like it, but I believe it and it seems it's coming true. So I still say they get one, and that one will be Butler. Unless BB sees a shift coming and decides to resign High instead. The team taking the field the season after this, will be extremely different on the D side of the house.

I still think it's reasonable to expect 2/3 to be signed. That would likely be Butler and one of HT/Collins.

I've never believed for one second that they were going to manage to pay market value for all three players, though. Some here actually thought they'd sign all 3 AND Chandler Jones.

One more time, just for the he'll of it. They only have to sign one of them. Butler is a restricted free agent, in 2017, he's not going anywhere. All they have to do is sign either Hightower or Collins, they can franchise the other. And they are going to have 70 million to work with.

The Patriots are in great shape, stop pulling the fire alarm.

Go tell that to the guy who covers the team and probably knows more than you or I about what's going on.

Let's start there.

This team can easily fit all 3 next year and the year after.

They are at about 91 million in commitments when you factor in Amendola doing his contract.

They have Brady, Edelman, Gronk, Amendola, Hogan, Lewis, Solder & Vollmer signed on offense. So basically the offense is all taken care of when you add in the lower priced guys on the team and low price FAs.

That means they can spend almost all that 70 million on defense.

With that they should be able to afford Collins, Hightower, Butler, Sheard and have 20 M left over.

They might need to give up a little DL depth but it is doable and worth doing.

Hope they can keep 2/3.. Specifically The LBs.

The Pats' final offer to McCourty came after he thought he had decided that he was leaving. I don't know why anybody would claim to have any idea what the Pats will be offering 10 months from now.

Because he covers the team, he knows more than anyone not named Gary Tanguay.

I was going to enjoy this season but now I think I will just have a good long cry instead.

With the amount of underpaid players already on this team affording them significantly extra space (Brady, Gronk, Edelman) I'll be extremely disappointed if they can't manage to pay the 3.

Yep. They have one bad contact on the team, Marcus Cannon, that's it. I think this recent free agency and lack of movement on franchise players is going to make signings difficult right now but I'm not worried about looking term.

Brady and Edelman are significantly under paid, Gronk isn't.

When Gronk signed the deal, he was the highest paid TE in the game, but he also missed a majority of his first 2 seasons of the deal cuz of injury. Its the way it works sometimes. Gronk has a good deal.

Are they really going to have 70million in cap space next year?

This points to the brilliance of BB and staff, sure they would like to sign all three, but this team will prepare any eventuality in case they do not..

Too much time spent on worrying might happen next year or the year after..

Lots of people who cover the team in this town have zero clue what BB thinks or does.

....Unless he wants them to know which serves a purpose.

I wouldn't be shocked to see a McCourty trade at some point, which could lead to signing all 3. I like McCourty and am not advocating trading him, but it would fit BB's MO. Every player I can think of that BB has signed for absolute top of the market money weren't on the team for duration of the contract. Mankins and Seymour were traded and the Pats declined Wilfork's option. If the Pats keep McCourty, I can't see them signing all 3.

If you think the guy who covers the team has information from belichick about contract and roster plans you are naive. Giardi is guessing.

And the purpose of the guessing is to create enough drama to get people to read his column and talk about it.
