Semi-OT: Raiders had Gronk on top of TE draft list

Interesting photos from what looks like a draft preparation binder from the Raiders from 2010. Includes some of their draft profiles on players, as well as some rankings of positions.

The Raiders had Gronk at the top of the list with Gresham and considered both potential Pro Bowlers worthy of 1st round picks.

Nothing really insightful here, but thought it would be of interest to some.

Thanks for trading him to us then instead if picking him yourselves.

And they had the Prisoner #3.

Love the average stats. Hands, routes basically blocking too.

Lol. How'd that work out?

To be fair, I don't think they were saying he was "a" number 2 TE. They were saying he would step in as #2 on their existing depth chart behind Zach Miller, who had been a high 2nd round pick himself and was the team's best receiver at the time.

It feels funny to defend the Raiders, but: they had Zach Miller, their recent #38 overall pick, coming off a solid 66-catch, 805-yard season. Projecting any rookie as #2 for them was reasonable, and they had Gronk as their #1 TE prospect in the best TE class ever. Sounds like pretty darned good scouting, actually.

Edit: realtime beat me to it in real time, I see!

Yea thats how I read it as well.

Gronk played about 75% of the snaps as a rookie here and it would have been a matter of time in 2010 until he took over the TE1 role from Miller. Not a knock on Miller but it's Gronk we are talking about.

Do not disagree, it just is an interesting take on how teams evaluate players.. no mentioning of his penchant to party, for example...

I imagined a more sophisticated, lengthy assessment..

Gronk's draft evaluation was pretty much spot on.
- Good physical build
- Best all around player in the draft
- Good blocker (physical) at the POA
- Does not go down easy after the catch
- Did not play in 2008 due to back injury
- Good scheme fit, all around TE

Scanning down the article and the other evaluations showed some pretty keen insight into the players available.
The TE rankings had Gronk, Jermaine Gresham, Hernandez and Jimmy Graham.
Dez Bryant was called a possible beast.
For WR's they also had Eric Decker, Jacoby Ford, Emmanuel Sanders & Antonio Brown ranked up there. They even had Brandon LaFell 8th on the list.
They also had Tim Tebow well down the list of QBs.

With accurate evaluations like that they should have been more successful. Unfortunately for them I put a 25 year curse on the Raiders in 2001 and they won't be able to win anything until 2026 at the earliest. ;)

They looked pretty frisky last year when they finally got decent QB play.

Look at the TE rankings...4 of the top 15 either played for the Patriots or are currently on the roster:

#1 Gronk
#3 Hernandez
#11 Hooman
#12 Harbor

Cool story, bro.

The only time they were even close to winning was in the first year of my curse, 2002, when they were clobbered (48-21) in the SB by the vaunted NFL machine from Tampa Bay. Since then they've averaged 4.8 wins per season over a 13 year span.

ya, well, they don't mention his work ethic, either.......

why? because the report was based on the scout watching a couple of games and since TE was not a need due to Miller, they did the basic research on him as they had no plans to draft him

Can we use this as proof that everyone thought Gronk would be great and can discredit Belichick for the pick?

Well, at that time the owner was in the habit of throwing out the scouting report anyway, and just drafting the guy with the fastest 40-yd dash time
