I Mitchell for sure? If history has told us anything, a 4th round drafted-by-Belichick receiver might not even make it out of camp.

I hope Mitchell is awesome and makes the team, though.
He seems to have the it factor
And has a good head on his shoulders.
I agree if he can be a more athletic Givens I am stoked

I hope this is the first domino to fall in an attempt to extend a couple of their prime 2017
free agents.
Hard to see it any other way.

As I said earlier, according to mgteich every fourth round pick has made the team their first year.

He's quicker than Amendola.

He's faster, I don't believe he's quicker and I don't think they will use him in the slot, I think he will play outside. We'll see?

Amendola has had nagging injuries. Edelman missed most of an entire season with a foot injury he couldn't play on. That's the difference. That said, nobody is making the claim that Edelman is the picture of health and durability either.

Amendola's "injury prone" label came off of 2 major injuries, not nagging ones so I'm not sure what your point was

According to their their combine/pro day measurements, Hogan was slightly quicker than Amendola. Physically, Hogan matches Amendola in speed and agility while having 40 pounds, 3 inches and a bunch of leaping ability on him. Not an indictment of Amendola as much as an acknowledgement that Hogan's a physical freak.

On one hand, pro days usually yield slightly better numbers than combines, so I wouldn't be against calling those short shuttle and 3 cone times even. OTOH, Hogan's numbers were taken more recently, and he doesn't have the injury history and wear and tear that Amendola has.

If I had to guess, I'd say that they intend to play Hogan all over the place. I think we'll see him line up outside more often than not, probably at split end since he has the strength to beat press coverage and the agility to get open right on the line of scrimmage if need be. But he's physically capable of playing any role, and I expect to see him line up in the slot frequently.

Honestly, unless he has the worst camp of his life, Washington will be on the team. I don't think they even bother signing Washington if they think he will be cut. Dobson has 0% chance of making this team, but to those thinking Mitchell will definitely make it, I think Washington has a better chance. Let's not forget, Mitchell was a FOURTH round pick. Also Lucien has no chance of making the team. Both Mitchell and Lucien probably get cut and added to the practice squad. Though that is a very risky route to go, especially if they have great camps, other teams will be watching.

I think it will be

Edelman
Amendola
Hogan
Washington
Martin
Slater

Mitchell and Lucien on the practice squad, Dobson to Dairy Queen working the drive through window.

Of course, there is always a caveat or two, lots of IF's. IF Mitchell and Lucien are incredible in camp, and BB is afraid to lose them, he's been known to be cut throat and cut a veteran so Hogan, Martin or Washington could be cut. What if De'Runnya Wilson is a beast in camp, do the Pats keep him as a TE and cut a vet TE ? LOTS of IFs, but if things happen as I suspect they do, I think those 6 vets are your receivers. I REALLY want Mitchell, Lucien and even Wilson to make the team, but they would really need to knock BB's (and Brady's) socks off to make the starting 53.

During Belichick's 16 year tenure as Patriots coach, there have been exactly TWO 4th round picks which he has cut during their 1st year. The 1st was TE Garrett Mills, whom he tried to stash on the PS right before the start of the season only to have Mike Tice and the Vikings claim him. The other was Kareem Brown, who was cut because the Pats had a rash of injuries in 2007 and DE was one of their strongest positions. The likelihood of Mitchell being cut over someone like Martin is very slim.

Sorry, but Mitchell won't clear waivers to make it to the practice squad. Not when Carolina and the Seahawks were planning on taking him.

OH, you forgot to mention that Mitchell spent his freshman year at Georgia playing CB.

Slater is not a WR. He's a STs player. Nothing more. Nothing less.

I think he's a bigger body possession receiver, not a smaller quicker slot receiver. I expect the Patriots to use Hogan to replace LaFell.

You don't have to be small to be quick. As BradyFTW points out, his numbers are slightly better than Amendola's in both the Short Shuttle and 3 Cone..

I think that Hogan will be used like Edelman and Amendola. Both inside and outside. Attempting to pigeon-hole players like so many try to do on this board is a recipe for failure.

Slater is the best at what he does Ebner and other special teams maven his name escapes me is a beast on st too.
Alot of competition

Very glad Danny stays a Patriot! Clutch, fearless, and trusted by 12.
This 2016 passing offense is going to be formidable and lots of fun to watch!
Sure hope the run game can keep up!

I think there's room for six receivers, plus Slater. It may mean they skimp elsewhere, but it's certainly possible to fit six receivers. I suppose it depends whether you value Nate Washington over James Develin, for instance.

Current locks are:

QB (2): Garoppolo, Brissett
RB (3): Blount, Lewis, Bolden
WR (3): Edelman, Hogan, Amendola
TE (2): Gronkowski, Bennett
OL (5): Solder, Vollmer, Stork, Thuney, Mason

DL (5): Ninkovich, Sheard, Brown, Knighton, Valentine
LB (2): Collins, Hightower
CB (3): Butler, Ryan, Jones
S (4): McCourty, Chung, Richards, Harmon

ST (4): Gostkowski, Allen, Cardona, Slater

That's 33 players who are almost certainly locks, barring injury. There's another few who will almost certainly make the team:

WR (1): Mitchell
DL (3): Long, Branch, Grissom
LB (2): McClellin, Freeny
ST (2): King, Ebner

This gives us a total of 41, and 12 more positions to play around with until Brady comes back.

QB: 2
RB: 3
WR: 4
TE: 2
OL: 5

DL: 8
LB: 4
CB: 3
S: 4

ST: 6

4 of those are likely to be offensive linemen, probably a tackle and three interior linemen, so that's 45. We'll likely get 2 more defensive backs, so we're at 47. Another defensive lineman will knock it up to 48. Now we have 5 slots left. One's likely to be a third tight end, so we're down to 4. Now we can add two WRs and two RBs (including a FB) or one WR and two RBs, or a combination of three skill position players and one player elsewhere (tight end, linebacker, or special teams).

Since two TEs are likely to be on the field for a majority of snaps, I can see rolling without a fullback.

In other words, it's not impossible to imagine keeping 6 WRs. Someone will have to make way for Brady come week 5, but I suspect the final roster will include Edelman, Hogan, Amendola, Mitchell, Washington, and Martin.

Depends on how you define "made the team". I don't consider Garrett Mills having made the team since he was cut before playing a game.. But that's just me..

Such great news. No new WR, regardless of potential, makes me feel as good as a proven Patriots WR.

So...entering the season with 4 receiving threats who have already made a full mind meld with Brady: Edelman, Gronk, Amendola and Lewis. Then adding another monster tight end in Bennett and letting Hogan, Martin, Washington, Mitchell and Lucien fight to earn snaps? Yeah, I'll take that.

When have we had this many receivers that could be contributors ? It really is a GOOD problem to have that there will be some tough choices. I will be definitely concentrating on the WR/TE competition, should be very interesting.

Since 2001, BB has drafted 21 fourth round draft picks. Exactly one was released his rookie year (Kareem Brown). Given that history, I think it extremely unlikely that BB will release Mitchell during his rookie year to try to sneak him on the Practice Squad.

I'm glad.

We need to keep the Jet killer around. Every time we play the Jets, this dude makes insane plays where we don't win the game if he doesn't make them.

I completely agree with your point (I made a similar post before seeing yours) but wasn't Mills cut just before his second year? I thought he finished his rookie year on injured reserve.

Fantastic news!!!! Really glad to have Danny back, he was soooo clutch for us last year. If Tom can get some time, our offense is really going to be difficult to handle!!!!

Yeah, there's no way Mitchell would make it to the PS. And I think he'll be worth a spot on the 53 this year anyway. Seems clear that Edelman, Hogan and Amendola will be the clear top 3 WRs, and there's two more spots after that up for grabs. And like you, I don't count Slater as a WR, so he's not in the running for one of them.

Of the two remaining slots, I think Mitchell is the clear WR5 based on a combination of long-term potential and short-term ST ability. That leaves Dobson, Washington, Martin and Lucien to fight for WR4, though Lucien doesn't really count since he's going to the PS. Setting aside the likelihood that injuries force some clarity into the picture, my guess would be that Washington gets the spot, and Dobson and Martin are gone.

I assume that the poster was talking about his time with the Patriots, given the Tweet he shared. Hopefully that makes the point much easier to figure out.

I like Amendola's clutchness.

But I love his handsomeness.
