REPORT: Danny Amendola and the Patriots have agreed to restructure contract

Yes but I speculate those 3 players were leverage moves if DA negotiations went sideways.

Disagree, I think they are very different players than Amendola and see them competing for the outside downfield receiver and not a slot receiver role.

Given the silly money thrown at receivers not as good as DA this off-season, I think any further criticism of the guy here should be taken with a pillar of salt.
No, any criticism will just be unadulterated hatred at a personnel level. I called for his cutting solely for money to sign Butler, High or Collins.
The guy is clutch and does not drop balls, he comes up big in situations when we need someone to step.
In saying all of that, I fear that this move may not be enough for him to survive as we have added serious receiving threat this off season.
May the best man win.

writing seems to be on the wall for Aaron Dobson... Only thing I would change is that perhaps Lucien or another makes practice squad (maybe even mitchell?)

In my eyes it is Dobson vs. Martin for final spot..

from earlier in post - this is mine as well..

JE11
Hogan
DA
Martin
Mitchell

I think that Martin, Washington, and Dobson are all fighting for one spot. Lucien will head to PS imo.

Different kinds of players. Martin's miscast as a downfield receiver, and thus doesn't fill the same role that Dobson or Washington can. I think Martin and one of those two all make the team and they keep six receivers; my money's on Washington, whom everyone seems to have written off.

He wants to win. :)

Doesn't matter. At the end of the day its a numbers and financial game and DA knew he had to reduce his cap # to stay with the team.

Maybe.

I think Washington and Dobson basically are dead men walking.

Everyone wanted a restructure the difference was calling for the release. I'm glad he was willing to redo his deal, I would not have wanted to go into the season with no slot option if Edelman went down again.

JE, Hogan and Martin all can play the slot.

I basically agree but Martin is kind of a tweener, he doesn't fit a slot role, possession role, out deep threat role, and they seem to be constructing a unit specific to roles. If so then Washington is definitely in the mix as he is a downfield receiver with great YPC numbers. Dobson is fighting for his lid and there going to be question as to whether he even makes it to camp.

I think it looks like this:

Edelman-lock

Amendola-lock

Hogan-lock

Mitchell-lock

Martin-bubble

Washington-bubble

Dobson-bubble

Lucien-PS

Edelman can play slot, disagree on Martin and Hogan. Can they be plugged in in emergency, yes, are they going to give Brady a receiver who gets open instantly, as Welker, Edelman and Amendola can, no.

IMO lock and likelihood to make the team

Edelman - lock
Hogan - lock
Mitchell - lock
Amendola - 99/100 (could still be cut if some crazy things happen but virtual lock)
Martin - 5/10
Washington 4/10
Lucien - 1/10 (of making the 53.. should easily make the PS. I think he is the kind of player who can come in and just impress so much you are scared to let him off the 53 and losing him. A ton of promise).
Dobson 1/100 (virtual cut but if he has an amazing rookie camp and preseason and looks 100% healthy and projects to stay that way he might slip in.. He plays no STs though i think so he need to show he can be a top 3 WR on this team to be kept. Good luck).

So that is how i see each plays likelihood. Amendola only get 99/100 and not lock though cause if a domino has to fall cause other plays demand to be kept he is the one you let go : ( Basically for him to leave both Lucien and Dobson need to blow doors off.

Maybe.

Honestly, unless he has the worst camp of his life, Washington will be on the team. I don't think they even bother signing Washington if they think he will be cut. Dobson has 0% chance of making this team, but to those thinking Mitchell will definitely make it, I think Washington has a better chance. Let's not forget, Mitchell was a FOURTH round pick. Also Lucien has no chance of making the team. Both Mitchell and Lucien probably get cut and added to the practice squad. Though that is a very risky route to go, especially if they have great camps, other teams will be watching.

I think it will be

Edelman
Amendola
Hogan
Washington
Martin
Slater

Mitchell and Lucien on the practice squad, Dobson to Dairy Queen working the drive through window.

Of course, there is always a caveat or two, lots of IF's. IF Mitchell and Lucien are incredible in camp, and BB is afraid to lose them, he's been known to be cut throat and cut a veteran so Hogan, Martin or Washington could be cut. What if De'Runnya Wilson is a beast in camp, do the Pats keep him as a TE and cut a vet TE ? LOTS of IFs, but if things happen as I suspect they do, I think those 6 vets are your receivers. I REALLY want Mitchell, Lucien and even Wilson to make the team, but they would really need to knock BB's (and Brady's) socks off to make the starting 53.

When have we had this many receivers that could be contributors ? It really is a GOOD problem to have that there will be some tough choices. I will be definitely concentrating on the WR/TE competition, should be very interesting.

Hogan spent 50% of his snaps playing the slot for Buffalo. How do you know that Hogan won't get open "instantly"? I watched him do so time and again against the Pats..

As Miguel noted in another post, the rooks will eat up about $1M of that (the rest of their hits either don't count or are already counted).

Thanks, if you are right then I completely misread it. This would make their cap space significantly greater.

Good, glad to hear it. I like him and think he makes the team better by being on it, but not on his previous contract. Win/win.

I think he's a bigger body possession receiver, not a smaller quicker slot receiver. I expect the Patriots to use Hogan to replace LaFell.

Edelman
Hogan
Amendola
Mitchell
Slater (ST)

About 5-6 WRs competing for 1 more spot.

I Mitchell for sure? If history has told us anything, a 4th round drafted-by-Belichick receiver might not even make it out of camp.

I hope Mitchell is awesome and makes the team, though.

Chris Hogan's 3 cone and short shuttle times were better than Amendola's. He may be big, but he definitely has the agility to play in the slot.

He's quicker than Amendola.
